MT Podiatrist Sponsors 3rd Annual 'Show Me Your Feet’ Photo Contest
For the third consecutive year, podiatrist Dr. Daniel Hodson is sponsoring a “Show Me Your Feet” photo contest. This year he is also adding artwork to the contest. The winning photo will be awarded $100 and the winning art will win $200. The contest will be open for submissions through Oct. 31, and winners will be announced by December.

The contest will also include a public display of entries at the Great Falls Specialty Clinic during the month of November. Over a hundred photos have been featured in his photo contest, and Hodson says that many have been displayed in his office.

MA Podiatrist Co-Owns Neonatal Ultrasound Art Studio
Viewed through a retail lens, the answer to when life begins is pretty simple: just as soon as it can be monetized. “Ultrasound art” is one of the fastest growing trends in prenatal purchases, with spruced-up sonograms deposing professional newborn photo shoots as the first stop for proud parents. At Radiant Art Studios, medical scans are turned into sun-catchers, wall panels, Christmas ornaments, and T-shirts.
|
|
Dr. Paula Fontaine |
“These images are taken when the child and the mother are still, basically one body,” said Joseph Moisan, who operates Radiant Art Studios alongside podiatrist Dr. Paula Fontaine. “It’s the newest newborn picture you could possibly have,” except for the “born” part, of course.

TX Podiatrist Uses RRT Vibration Therapy to Reduce Scar Tissue
Rapid Release Therapy (RRT) is focused on relief of soft tissue problems affecting nerves, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Soft tissue disorders typically result from overuse, injury, or surgery. Conditions caused by scarring of soft tissue include tarsal tunnel syndrome, neuromas, ankle pain, plantar fasciitis, post-surgical scarring, and more.
|
|
Dr. Ronica Holcombe |
We have found this non-invasive treatment as an effective modality and tool to reduce scar tissue, says North Texas Foot & Ankle podiatrist, Ronica Holcombe, DPM. In particular, the vibration therapy works exceptionally well to reduce post-surgical scarring.

State Seeks to Force WI Podiatrist to Return Money to Overcharged Patients
The state Department of Justice and consumer protection agency said Friday they had filed an enforcement action against Dr. John Lanham, alleging the Milwaukee podiatrist misled patients into thinking he accepted their health insurance when he did not. For years, Lanham has evaded long-lasting consequences while continuing to hit patients with high bills after failing to disclose he was not part of their insurance network.
The state's complaint, filed Wednesday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court, alleges Lanham and his staff are "deceptive and misleading" when they answer "Yes," when potential patients asked if Lanham accepts their insurance. Lanham understands what potential patients are asking and is not being truthful, according to the complaint.

Obamacare Could Lead to Shortening Medical School to 3 Years
The 48 million Americans currently lacking health insurance will have a chance to sign up for medical coverage once Obamacare goes into effect. But will there be enough doctors to care for them? One study predicts a shortage of 45,000 primary care physicians in just seven years. And at least three medical schools are shaving off a full-year of their degree programs to get primary care physicians into the workforce sooner.
Dr. Robert Lahita, Chair of Medicine at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, told Jansing & Co., “It’s not a bad idea because the four-year school idea goes back to the turn of the last century, when Flexner said we should have, as the European system did, two years of basic science, two years of clinical science.” He said that the necessary training could be packed into three years by eliminating vacation time, concentrating on primary care, adding clinical training into the second and third years, and eliminating some electives.

| QUERIES (CLINICAL) | |
Query: Lifelong Foot Blisters
This 17-year-old young female presented with a history of painful blister formation on her feet, which she states has been going on since she was six months old. These blisters come and go and vary in severity. She has been treated by her PCPs over the years with multiple combinations of topicals, soaks, oral antibiotics, antifungals, and steroids. She has had it biopsied twice and it came back "verruca plantaris". There is no family history of similar issues. She does not get them on her hands.
|
|
Chronic foot blisters |
These blisters all appear to be friction-related and on weight-bearing areas of the plantar foot. There does not seem to be an underlying tinea or dermatitis. She has some moderate hyperhidrosis. She wears Uggs or sandals due to the pain from the blisters. I did a punch biopsy to go to a dermatopathologist, and had her start using foot powder and running socks to hopefully reduce the moisture and friction. I will await the biopsy result and see if it helps direct treatment. Any other thoughts?

Query: Effect of Obamacare on Podiatry
Can anyone provide an unbiased and discerning thought on how Obamacare will affect podiatry? I know all the information is not out there, and the effects of the plan are yet to manifest, but both the younger and older podiatrists need to prepare on how to adjust accordingly.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) | |
From: Richard Gosnay, DPM
In dealing with catastrophic loss of tissue, sometimes we let our desire to help heroically get the best of us. Dead tissue is dead forever. It is never coming back. Its only remaining function is to provide sustenance for bacteria. Ruthless removal of all dead tissue is always required because no modality is going to reanimate dead tissue. So the decision to not use HBO therapy is reasonable.
On the bright side, all remaining live tissue is going to make it unless there is another catastrophic event (like infection or sickle cell crisis) because...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PRACTICE MANAGEMENT) | |
From: Keith L. Gurnick, DPM
Recall systems can be an effective practice management tool that benefits the practice and the patient as well. No recall system can guarantee 100% of the patients will follow up when recalled. An effective system begins in the office when the doctor takes time and should explain to the patient when they will be recalled for follow-up, and the reasons why returning to the office for the next visit are important for the patient's foot healthcare, even in the absence of the pain or symptoms that may have been the reason for the initial presenting visit.
Also, since our patients with insurance are paying a higher percentage of medical costs out of their own pockets and with...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (DME) | |
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
From your letter, it appears that you never received a rejection and have no idea why your application was denied. There are many reasons why an application may be rejected. For a sole proprietor DPM, it is often a simple matter (e.g., having different spellings of your name or
the office address in different areas of the application, or part of the application may not have been completed, or something was lost or misplaced by the NSC in your package). It could also be a complex issue such as a previous history of banishment from Medicare, previous licensure suspension, etc., or some scenario in between simple and complex (NPI not matching tax ID, etc).
The primary issue right now is for you to find out why you...

From: Joel Lang, DPM, Fay Mushlin
This problem is made more complicated than it needs to be. First off, if the computer is obsolete, which is why you are disposing of it, chances are no one wants it - so saving the hard drive is unnecessary. It is easy to open the case and remove the hard drive. It can be destroyed by a few well placed blows by a heavy hammer on a concrete surface. Scatter the pieces (especially the disk) in a few different trash pickups (or recycle containers) and you're done.
If you want documentation for HIPAA, take a few pictures. Be sure to recycle the rest of the computer since it has toxic substances that you don't want in a landfill.
There is a company called Gigabiter that is located in Norristown, PA. They have informed me that they go to every state except Alaska. They do on-site shredding and give you a certificate of destruction. We have used them in the past and have been very satisfied. Their phone numbers are 484-681-5084 or 866-944-2248.
