Faulty Body Alignment, Not Old Age Causes Arthritis: GA Podiatrist

Dr. Louis Pack, doctor of podiatric medicine, told an attentive audience that old age does not cause arthritis. Pack described his experience and research on osteoarthritis and his successful treatment of winning athletes and Navy SEALs, as well as ordinary people.

Dr. Louis Pack Discusses Arthritis (Photo Sharon Bray)

Pack's approach focuses on the mechanics of body alignment from the feet up. “Optimal alignment of weight-bearing joints,” said Pack, will “prevent or stop this disease, decrease pain without medication or surgery, and increase sports performance as you age.” Using illustrative comparisons to cars, Pack said “even a Rolls Royce” gives a rough ride if it has disparate tire sizes. He compared careful adjustments of human feet and legs to front-end auto alignment.

Australian Podiatrist Provides Athletic Shoe-Buying Advice

Recent research has found one-in-10 people experience the painful condition of shin splints, due to incorrect footwear. The study, commissioned by ASICS, also found that just under 40% of people wearing improper footwear experience aching feet. Maroochydore sports podiatrist Alana Underwood said no one pair of shoes would suit everyone. "It depends on people's foot structure," she said.

Alana Underwood

Her general advice is to find the right shoe for your particular feet. "(Look for) something that fits properly, that laces up, and has a cushioned midsole," Alana said. To accommodate the sudden changes in direction in tennis and netball, for example, Alana recommends a shoe with both medial and lateral stability, such as a cross-trainer.

MT Podiatrist Holds 'Show Me Your Feet' Photo Contest

In high school, Dr. Daniel Hodson showed artistic promise. He even won a sculpture contest after crafting a 9-foot-tall metal rhino that now resides in his mother's front yard in Utah. However, Hodson is using his love of art in a unique way to decorate his new office. Hodson, a podiatrist at the Great Falls Clinic, is hosting a photo contest. The winning photograph will be displayed in his office.

Professional and amateur photographers are asked to submit pictures of feet in the "Show Me Your Feet" photo contest. The contest winner will earn $100, and his or her artwork will be displayed in a prominent location inside the podiatry department at the Great Falls Clinic Specialty Center.

NH Podiatrist Conducts Shoes For Needy Drive

Every seven seconds, Soles4Souls Inc., gives away a pair of shoes to someone in need. Soles4Souls and Core Podiatry will be collecting gently worn footwear and/or donations to ship the shoes to a person in need, whether they are victims of a natural disaster or subject to living in extreme poverty.

Dr. James Dolan

"At Core Podiatry we talk with patients about shoes each day and often have patients bring in multiple pairs of shoes to be evaluated," said Jim Dolan, DPM, Core Podiatry. "Collecting gently worn shoes is a natural fit for a podiatrist's office and a great way to help people who really need shoes through the Soles4Souls organization. Last year we collected over 1,600 pairs of shoes, and this year we hope to collect more than 2,000 pairs."

NY Podiatrist Receives EMR Stimulus Check

Users of PrognoCIS electronic medical records (EMR) have begun and to receive federal stimulus checks, reports the EMR medical software and services provider Bizmatics Inc. Their flagship EMR product PrognoCIS is helping many physicians qualify for federal funding to assist with EMR costs, and the number of Bizmatics customers receiving money per month has increased significantly over the past several months.

Dr. Gus Constantouris

“I just received the $18,000 EHR incentive check yesterday,” wrote Bizmatics customer Gus Constantouris, DPM, of Commack, NY, after implementing PrognoCIS at his podiatry practice. “I appreciate all [Bizmatics’] assistance throughout this complex process. Everyone at Bizmatics…has been very attentive to all our needs.”

UK Physiotherapists And Podiatrists May Soon Be Able To Prescribe Medication For Their Patients

A government consultation, closing on the 8th December, is currently deciding whether physiotherapists and podiatrists may soon be able to prescribe medication for their patients without needing a doctor's written agreement. The decision would allow physiotherapists and podiatrists to enjoy the same prescribing rights as other non-medical professionals like nurses and pharmacists.

Nearly All U.S. Doctors are Now on Social Media

The number of physicians using sites such as Facebook and Twitter has grown so quickly that Gabriel Bosslet, MD realized the moment his study on physician social media use appeared in June that it already was out of date. The data, collected by Dr. Bosslet between February and May 2010 and posted more than a year later on the Journal of General Internal Medicine site, found that 41.6% of doctors use social media sites.

However, between April and May 2011, research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan found that 84% of doctors use social media for personal purposes. Then in August, nearly 90% of physicians reported that they used at least one social media site personally, according to a survey by the online physician learning collaborative QuantiaMD. By those numbers, physicians are well ahead of the general adult population -- 65% of the general public use social media, according to a study published in August by the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1

RE: Compromised NPI Number

I Googled my name to check on the accuracy of the information about me being displayed on the Internet. I was shocked to find my NPI number boldly displayed on the first page of my Google citings. Unauthorized use of one’s NPI number may allow someone with medical knowledge to call in a non-controlled prescription, or submit fraudulent bills to insurance companies under your name using your NPI number.

The remedy for this is to click on the displayed number and request customerservice@npienumerator.com to deactivate your profile. They state they will respond within 7 days. I am still awaiting my response.

RE:  Social Media Policy (James E. Rogers, DPM)
From: Lynn Homisak

I would be happy to share with you a personal telephone and computer/Internet use policy to include in your employee manual. It clearly states the restrictions in all three areas as well as cell phone usage and email. Just write to me for a copy. Keep in mind, it's one thing to HAVE the policy...another to enforce it, so be sure that any policy you adopt in your practice applies to all, across the board, with consequences for abuse. Otherwise, don't bother. P.S. - It also helps to lead by example!

RE: Support DPM Candidates for Congress
From: Marc Garfield, DPM

First of all, I intentionally left Dr. Rogers' name and the quote out of my post, which was then later “clarified” by PM News. My point is: that until, I hear what a candidate is proposing and how they propose to enact that legislatively, we should curtail a rallying cry to elect anyone regardless of how you may identify with them. I do not feel it was necessary to name an individual to make that point.

Secondly, I have not expressed my opinions about public policy which many of you are now assuming incorrectly. So, rather than have you all speak for me. I’ll speak for myself. We do not have a free market system in medicine now. We cannot politically remove the government from medicine, residency training, or healthcare policy. Our present system will hit a breaking point...

Editor's Note: Dr. Garfield's extended-length letter can be read here.
