On September 8th, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) held its annual faculty retreat. Besides offering guests speakers and faculty development, the College took this time to recognize faculty for their service. Joel Sturm, NYCPM's COO, presented service awards to all faculty from 5 years to 40 years.

The College’s new leadership award.was presented to Elizabeth Bonarigo, DPM for her service to the College and alumni by providing leadership and guidance to new and prospective students as well. Dr. Bonarigo is a lecturer under the Medicine Department. She also has clinical roles teaching the radiology clerkship in the Foot Clinics of New York and is working as an attending at Lincoln Hospital.

OH Podiatrist Performs First Total Custom Ankle Replacement in Ohio
Peter Highlander, DPM is a founding member of the American Orthopedic Society of 3-D Printing. A reconstructive foot and ankle surgeon in Bellevue, Ohio, he has made headlines recently for his custom 3-D printed implants. “Six months ago, I performed the first total custom ankle replacement in the state of Ohio,” Highlander says, “and from there I have done many other custom bone and joint replacements including metatarsals, navicular, and custom deformity corrections.”

The ankle-replacement patient, a healthy woman in her 30s with a deformed ankle resulting from a motor vehicle accident, had been told by numerous doctors that amputation was the only option. But within months after Highlander’s surgery, she was walking normally.

Endangered Species' Feces Could Help Fight Against DFUs
Feces from endangered animals could be the source of a potential new treatment for the infectious bacteria that cause diabetic foot ulcers, researchers from the University of Sheffield have found. Waste from animals including Guinea baboons, lemurs, and Visayan pigs has been shown to contain bacteriophages that could be used in the fight against hard-to-treat diabetic ulcers, saving the NHS an estimated £1 billion a year.
The Sheffield researchers discovered that naturally occurring viruses in the poo kill bacterial species that are resistant to antibiotics and are the cause of foot ulcers that result in 7,000 amputations a year. Phages, formally known as bacteriophages, are viruses that solely kill and selectively target bacteria. They are the most common biological entities in nature, and have been shown to effectively fight and destroy multi-drug resistant bacteria. Namely, when all antibiotics fail, phages often still succeed in killing the bacteria.

8 Tips to Improve Patient Satisfaction
It’s more important than ever to be able to track and monitor patient satisfaction and take steps to make improvements to meet the changing expectations of patients. To effectively gauge what patients think and identify areas for improvement, here are best practices to follow.
7. Make the changes - Take this simple feedback and make a list of areas to work on. Then you can begin to tackle improvements. Some tips to make that process more successful include:

Group potential improvements into small changes and big changes. A small change might be something like temperature control and a big change might be service training with staff.
-
Tackle bigger changes one at a time. The little things like adding a coffee station to the waiting room can quickly be ticked off the list.
-
Get as much buy-in on the big changes as possible. Share the feedback from patients and ask for input on how to improve. Get the staff involved and engaged.
-
Be open to changes or upgrades in technology and processes to help address problems.

I think casting for orthotic devices is a verb, because the fee is for a "service" rather than a "product", justifying the fee and in a response to Dr. Kornfeld's post. Like surgery, the fee is not for the materials or the cost of suture, it is for the service and talent to perform the service.
