CA Podiatrist Urges Childhood Obesity Awareness
“Obesity affects almost every organ in the body, and its impact is even more detrimental in children in that their bodies are still growing and developing,” said California Podiatric Medical Association (CPMA) President Carolyn E. McAloon, DPM. “Disease consequences of obesity include increased cardiovascular disease (high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke), increased rates of diabetes, breathing problems including asthma and sleep disturbances - namely sleep apnea, increased digestive and liver problems, and increased orthopedic problems, including degenerative joint disease of the back, hips, knees, ankles, and feet.
|
| Dr. Carolyn McAloon |
“Our nation’s children have entered a perfect storm for becoming obese - consuming diets that are high in fat, sugar, and salt, while engaging in an increasingly sedentary lifestyle where television, video games and computers have replaced running, biking, swimming, slides, swings, and monkey bars,” said Dr. McAloon.

Aussie Podiatrist Discusses Shin Splints
As one of the most common ailments encountered by those looking to boost their fitness levels, shin splints are a frustrating and painful reminder to slow down and reassess your fitness regimen, according to Medifoot Podiatry director Mathew Keating. "We commonly see people who have started their exercise regimes or increased the intensity of their fitness plans with the very best of intentions," he says.
|
|
Matthew Keating |
"Improper biomechanics is the cause of many overuse syndromes such as shin splints and heel pain. It's important to use tools for prevention before you begin, gradually build up intensity, and allow your body time to adjust."

IN Podiatrist Celebrates 35 Years in Practice
Local podiatrist and foot surgeon Dr. Vince Coda is celebrating 35 years in practice in Kendallville this year. He attended the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine, where he graduated with a medical degree in podiatric medicine. Coda said he became familiar with northeast Indiana while serving his medical residency in South Bend. “I liked the lakes, rolling hills, and small towns,” he said.

Dr. Vince Coda with Staff |
“A colleague suggested Kendallville.” Dr. Coda said he has no regrets about choosing to live and work in a small town. “I’ve really enjoyed the people, and it’s a great area to raise a family,” he said. Over the years, he expanded his practice into LaGrange, Steuben, and Whitley counties, and he currently does surgeries at Cameron Memorial Community Hospital in Angola, Parkview LaGrange and Parkview Noble hospitals.

IN Podiatrist is first to Implant Cellular Allogeneic Bone Graft
RTI Surgical Inc., a global surgical implant company, has announced the first implantation of the company’s map3™ Cellular Allogeneic Bone Graft implant in a foot and ankle procedure. Michael Lyons, DPM, an associate member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, performed the implantation during a medial column fusion procedure in Indiana. He used the implant chip's allograft configuration, one of two configurations that will be available.

|
Dr. Michael Lyons |
“Taking into account the published MAPC™ research, I decided to use map3 in a complex case with an immune-compromised patient because it would support the patient’s ability to heal,” said Dr. Lyons.

Improper Footwear Can Lead to Athletic Injuries: IL Podiatrist
No one disputes that exercise provides a host of health benefits, from helping to control weight to improving cardiovascular functions. But exercising in the wrong footwear can cause more harm than good, especially since foot health is integral to overall well-being. “To get the most out of your workout or from playing a favorite sport, it’s imperative to choose the right footwear for the type of exercise you’ll engage in,” says Dr. Matthew Garoufalis, a podiatrist and president of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). “Improper footwear can lead to irritation and injury.”
|
|
Dr. Matthew Garoufalis |
Foot or ankle sprains and fractures are the most common types of injuries related to exercise and footwear. The type of exercise or sport you prefer can influence the type of injury you could experience. In general, for example, foot and ankle sprains and fractures are more common among football players, while basketball players may suffer more ankle sprains, and runners experience stress fractures to feet or ankles.

Fewer Certified EHRs for Stage 2 May Pose Problems for Docs
There is growing concern that far fewer software developers have certified electronic health-record systems for use by healthcare providers under federal Stage 2 meaningful-use requirements than under Stage 1. A Modern Healthcare review of the Certified Health IT Product List compiled by HHS' Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology shows that just 79 companies, providers, and other organizations have developed software and had it tested and certified to ONC-determined software functionality standards for Stage 2 meaningful-use requirements. In comparison, there were 988 developers of health information technology systems tested and certified for Stage 1.
This could cause problems for hospitals and office-based physician practices, which must advance quickly from Stage 1 to Stage 2 to avoid penalties, but still don't have tested and certified systems for meeting the Stage 2 requirements. Experts say vendors are facing problems as they try to develop EHR systems capable of performing calculations for measures providers must report to the CMS under the Stage 2 meaningful-use requirements.

Query: Pediatric Chronic Onychocryptosis
I have a healthy 7 year old pediatric patient with chronic onychocryptosis who has failed temporary procedures. The mother wants a permanent procedure performed as the child has significant anxiety. Are there any contraindications of a permanent chemical/surgical ablation in a child of this age with respect to future cosmesis or osseous structures? As she is a female, I am concerned about the cosmetic appearance in adulthood as her osseous structures change. Advice would be appreciated.

Query: Recall Systems
Our recall system is haphazard and ineffectual. My experience is that recalls of patients who haven't been seen in over one year are very poor. We also offered our staff a monetary bonus for every patient whom they get to make an appointment and come in. Please share your experiences with recall systems.

I have seen tragedies like this in the past which have been sent to our wound care center. This young man is 15 years old, so we have to remember he has an entire life in front of him. I think he is owed a chance to keep something fairly functional, and unless he turns completely septic, any and all modalities should be employed before amputation. Once the leg is off, it doesn't come back. I have used grafts, VACs, HBO, and endovascular procedures, as well as countless other measures.
Let the boy decide when it's time. They say God watches over surgeons and children. Miracles do happen. Give the boy a chance. I've salvaged some pretty lost causes. They aren't pretty, but they work.

From: Dennis Shavelson, DPM
Mr. Schwartz’s pedorthic position does not marry well with modern podiatric biomechanics. His suggestion of an unstable rocker shoe such as MBT would leave many patients possessing unstable biomechanics and/or LOPS in danger of balance problems, falls, and even serious injury. Sketchers Rocker Shoes, based on similar mechanics, continues to be involved in lawsuits involving serious injuries and permanent disability as a result of their use.
I theorize that Robert’s focus is on what shoe this patient is wearing rather than questioning what type of pedal biomechanics this patient presents, which is a recipe for potential disaster and possible lawsuits against prescribing doctors.
I recommend foot type-specific custom orthotics with a memory foam topcover and a balance for the lesion. That way, the patient has no wound, but in addition, he has better pedal posture, better balance, and better function as opposed to an unbalanced biomechanical equilibrium produced by these shoes.

I have looked at the website for DBAN which can be found at dban.org/ There is a link to this site on the sourceforge webpage that Dr. Musella provided. There are some disclaimers on the website that make the DBAN software unsuitable for use to erase protected health information. You can visit the DBAN website to view them yourself, but for convenience, I am including them in this post:
Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) is free erasure software designed for consumer use. DBAN users should be aware of some product limitations, including:
No guarantee that data is removed
Limited hardware support...
