CT Podiatrist Receives SAWC Wound Care Scholarship

The North American Center for Continuing Medical Education, LLC (NACCME), the CE-sponsor for the Symposium on Advanced Wound Care (SAWC) Spring and Fall meetings, and SAWC co-host, HMP Communications, LLC, have announced the continuation of the SAWC “Gives Back” program at the SAWC Fall 2012 meeting held in Baltimore, MD. On September 13, 2013, SAWC “Gives Back” awarded four new scholarships to outstanding candidates selected by several prominent wound care societies and associations.

Dr. Sahani Howie

The Wound Care Podiatrist Scholarship was awarded to Sahani Howie, DPM, and was presented by Matthew Garoufalis, DPM, President-Elect of the APMA. “Wound care is predominately a multidisciplinary focused practice,” stated Dr. Howie. “This multidisciplinary approach to wound care is a theme further supported through the SAWC scholarship awards program. I feel that it acknowledges the importance of a team approach to addressing the complicated wounds that we all deal with on a regular basis,” said Dr. Howie.

Proper Shoes Can Prevent Running Injuires: FL Podiatrist

"There are a lot of ways to injury yourself running, but not having a proper shoe that supports you in the right way can put excess strain on the body," explained sports podiatrist and doctor of podiatric medicine Cary Zinkin. He said that he sees many clients in his practice develop injuries such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and stress fractures from poor-fitting or overused shoes. (A standard running shoe lifetime, he says, ranges somewhere between 300 and 500 miles.)

Dr. Cary Zinkin

As a runner himself, Zinkin knows firsthand the importance of a good shoe fit. "You can wear any clothes you want, but you have to have the best shoe. That's your equipment," he says.

DIY With the Right Footwear - APMA President

“We’ve all watched a neighbor mow the lawn in flip-flops and worried that they are risking injury,” says Joseph M. Caporusso, DPM, a podiatrist and president of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). “Just as you equip yourself with the right tools for a do-it-yorself (DIY) project, you need the right kind of footwear when working around your house.”

Dr. Joseph M. Caporusso

Injuries and irritation can sometimes happen, despite your best precautions. When foot pain occurs, don’t wait to see if it will just go away on its own. “There’s really no such thing as ‘normal’ foot pain,” Caporusso says. “If you experience foot pain after engaging in a DIY project around your house, you should see today’s podiatrist. He or she can diagnose your pain and advise you on treatment options.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Awesome Acts Appreciated Anywhere

Extend appreciation to acknowledge those who make your life brighter. Here are a few ideas:

  •  Affix a note of praise to a “can’t miss” location— a computer or an office door.
  •  Scribble a note on a whiteboard or message center.
  •  Send a greeting card with a message appropriate for the occasion.
  •  Send an electronic thank-you card.
  •  Catch people doing something you admire and compliment them.
  •  Drop a roll of Life Savers candy with a note of thanks, acknowledging how they “saved the day.”
  •  Purchase inspirational books and send them along with a note.
  •  Stuff an appreciation “goodies” box with “appreciation prizes” and have regular drawings.
  •  Start a Wall of Fame, posting letters from patients praising any employee.
  •  Celebrate “Employee Appreciation Day.”
