PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
90% of My Patients Wear Wrong Sized Footwear: TN Podiatrist
Cary Gannon, DPM, podiatric surgeon and founder of Aila Cosmetics, says that about 90 percent of the people who come into her office are wearing shoes that are two sizes too small. “As we get older, our feet increase in size and shape, and so our foot size increases,” Gannon says.
|
Dr. Cary Gannon |
“We continually go and purchase the same size, but we forget that as we age, kind of everything about our body changes… a ton of foot pathology is actually manageable or corrected by just putting people in the right size shoe.”

HEALTHCARE NEWS |
Verma Tells Insurers to Adopt Reforms or Face Extinction Through 'Medicare for All'
The head of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) told a crowd of insurers if they don’t work to increase transparency and reduce patient costs, they will face extinction through "Medicare for All." CMS Administrator Seema Verma, who spoke Tuesday at industry group America’s Health Insurance Plan’s Medicare conference, called for insurers to reduce administrative complexity on formulary management tools and make it easier for patients to compare prices.
Verma referenced the American Medical Association’s narrow defeat of a proposal to endorse Medicare for All. The association’s delegates defeated an endorsement by a vote of 47% to 53% earlier this summer at the group's annual meeting. “When physicians who have traditionally opposed more government intrusion in their work consider endorsing government-run healthcare, something is terribly wrong,” Verma said.

HIPAA UPDATE |
Failure to Provide Patient Records can Result in a HIPAA Fine - Part 2
Recently, Bayfront Health in St. Petersburg, FL, agreed to pay the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Civil Rights (OCR) $85,000 and implement a corrective action plan for a potential breach of failing to provide a pregnant woman with a full copy of her medical record, including the fetal heart monitor records of her unborn child, within the 30 days prescribed by HIPAA.
OCR initiated its investigation based on a complaint from the mother. As a result, Bayfront directly provided the individual with the requested health information more than nine months after the initial request. The HIPAA Rules generally require covered healthcare providers to provide medical records within 30 days of the request, and providers can only charge a reasonable cost-based fee. This right to patient records extends to parents who seek medical information about their minor children. In this case, it was a mother who sought prenatal health records about her child.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
How to Have a Well-run Practice - Part 1
The daily grind of seeing patients can sometimes be, well, grinding. It’s important to take a step back and reconsider how you do things. There’s likely another way to achieve the same, if not better, result, especially when it comes to staffing. Here’s a sample of what 943 practice owners, managers, and physicians say has helped them create a better environment.
1. The best thing you can do for your organization is to create a healthy work culture where employees feel respected, empowered, and valued. Maintaining a positive work culture will make your employees want to stay and give their best to the organization.
