TX Podiatrist and MD Venture Into the Mani-Pedi Business
NailMD is a joint venture by Richard Galperin, a doctor of podiatric medicine in Dallas' Oak Cliff neighborhood, and Dr. Maryam Raza, medical director of wound care & hyperbaric medicine at Methodist Dallas Medical Center. An unnoticed skin tear or a fungal infection lurking on the foot can lead to serious complications, the kind Raza and Galperin often treat, they explained while giving a tour of the spa, located adjacent to Galperin's office.
|
Dr. Richard Galperin |
They are delving into the mani-pedi business as a way to offer "hospital-grade infection prevention" to patients with diabetes, hepatitis, and other circulatory issues. It also encourages the early detection of diabetic foot wounds, a costly health issue. "This is my living, looking at these wounds ... and I don't want to see them," Raza said. "I want patients to take care of their feet. That's where the idea came from."

NJ Podiatrist Assists Homeless Veterans
Stand Down South Jersey is an annual event at the Cherry Hill Armory of the New Jersey National Guard where homeless and at-risk veterans received social and medical service. U.S. Marine Corp. veteran Don Morton of Camden was able to relax in a reclining chair at the armory. It was not just to rest his legs and feet. Podiatrist Dr. Karen Galli sat down and began examining his chronic foot problems — blisters, calluses, and other issues from too much walking. The doctor then tended to his needs, treating and cleaning Morton's feet. Podiatry, and other medical services were provided by or through the Philadelphia VA Medical Center.

Dr. Karen Galli treats Marine veteran Don Morton |
Galli advised Morton that he needs regular foot care and should consult with his primary physician at the VA Clinic in Camden. "Usually, the underlying cause of foot problems in homeless veterans is diabetes, whose symptoms include ulcers and neuropathy. Sometimes they may step on a nail or glass, not feel it, and may end up losing their toes," the doctor explained.

Avoiding Hitting Kangaroos is a Challenge for Aussie Podiatrist
Rising kangaroo numbers aren’t limited to notorious hotspots in the state’s south, with farmers across the North West also hopping mad over the population boom. Lucy Shorter runs a podiatry practice in Moree and often travels local highways for appointments. Lately, she said she had come close to hitting several roos during most car trips.
|
Lucy Shorter |
"It’s not a matter of if you’ll hit one; it’s a matter of when," Shorter said. She said the amount of kangaroos on her property was also making her nervous about planting pasture for stock feed this year.

IN THE COURTS |
TX Podiatrist's Suit Accuses Former Patient of Harrassment, Defamation
A North Harris County podiatrist sued a former patient he claims is stalking him. In a lawsuit filed Sept. 20 in the Harris County 157th District Court, Dr. Jason L. Armstrong explains that David Johnson’s alleged acts date back to when he treated the defendant at the Foot and Ankle Centers of North Houston from June 2010 to June 2012.
Armstrong said that he "reluctantly" gave an "upset and angry" Johnson his personal cell phone number after the latter demanded it in October 2011. Johnson abused his access to the plaintiff, the complaint says. Court papers show that Johnson called Armstrong three times a day, as well as sent up to 20 texts per day. Armstrong said that the texts were "extremely disruptive and distracting."

ORTHOTICS |
High Price of Orthotics Means Declining Growth of the Market
The orthotic market is majorly categorized into custom and pre-fabricated foot insoles. Factors such as rise in the aging population, increase in the lifestyle associated disorders such as diabetes and obesity, increasing awareness about the foot orthotic insoles, and rise in disposable income are the factors responsible to drive the market of foot orthotic insoles. The high price of the foot orthotic insoles is known to decline the growth of the market.

HEALTHCARE NEWS |
Most Physicians Report Low Morale, Burden from New Payment Models
A majority of physicians look negatively at their profession and are increasingly burdened by new reimbursement models, according to a new survey. The Physicians Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that supports research on the impact of the Affordable Care Act on physician groups, surveyed 17,236 physicians across the U.S. on a variety of issues related to their field.
The report highlighted low morale among a majority of physicians. Fifty-four percent of physicians rated their morale as somewhat negative or very negative and only 37% were positive about the future of their profession. This is a decrease, however, from 2012 when 68% of physicians described low morale when surveyed by the organization. Further, 49% of physicians reported always feeling burned out. The same percentage also said they wouldn't recommend medicine as a career to their children.

QUERIES (EMR) |
Query: Is Second EMR Back-up Required
My EMR company is offering a "cloud" with a built-in disaster recovery plan (back-up) necessary for HIPAA compliance. Their back-up uses another third-party (Microsoft) to implement this plan.
Question: To ensure HIPAA compliance, do I need a separate, independent company to do a "second" back-up in the event my EMR company closes their doors?
