AT THE COLLEGES |
NYCPM Students Volunteer at Special Olympics Fall Classic
On September 20th, eighteen students from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine at Touro University (NYCPM), under the guidance of Craig Herman, DPM, participated in the Special Olympics 2025 Long Island Region Fall Classic, Fit Feet. The event took place in Cantiague Park in Hicksville, New York where the competition included bocce, golf, softball, and cross country. The 3rd year student volunteers learned how to interact with and examine people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their caregivers/coaches.

NYCPM Student Volunteers at Special Olympics Fall Classic |
They assisted in measuring proper shoe size, width, and style for activities, evaluating sock type for physical activity, evaluating current braces and orthotics, performing physical exams for orthopedic deformities that would put the athlete at risk, biomechanical examinations, gait evaluations, and determining the need and urgency for future treatment). According to Dr. Herman, "The students worked alongside other disciplines and participated in a group discussion with the physical and occupational therapy students volunteering at the event."

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1 |
Working with My Daughter is a ‘Dream Come True’: CO Podiatrist
Jennifer Wentz, DPM, a fellowship-trained foot and ankle surgeon, recently joined her father, Ralph Wentz, DPM at Wentz Foot & Ankle Specialists. Jennifer earned her doctor of podiatric medicine degree from Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery.

She then completed a three-year residency in foot and ankle surgery at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, based at a Level 1 trauma center in Roanoke, Virginia. Then, she had a year-long fellowship at Virginia Foot and Ankle in Richmond, Virginia. Ralph Wentz expressed his excitement about his daughter joining the practice, “It’s a dream come true.”

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 2 |
VA Podiatrist Runs to Regain District Seat on School Board
Four years ago, political newcomer Timothy Simmons narrowly defeated incumbent John Ocheltree, DPM by 144 votes in the race for the Pastures District seat on the Augusta County School Board. Those two are squaring off again this year for the same seat, only this time Simmons is the incumbent. Dr. Ocheltree is a podiatrist with his practice based in Staunton. He grew up in the Staunton area, graduating from Robert E. Lee High School (now Staunton High School) but spent a lot of his youth on his grandparents' farm in Swoope.
|
Dr. John Ocheltree |
Dr. Ocheltree doesn't like politics becoming interwoven with schools. "It shouldn't be a thing in our children's education," he said. "It shouldn't be." He said the way you get back to a less political school board is by electing someone like him, who he said is there for the kids and teachers and administration.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW |
CA Podiatrist Pleads Guilty to Skin Graft Related Fraud
Felipe Ruiz, DPM, 51, of Fresno, and Jose Gabriel Aguirre, 52, of Clovis, pleaded guilty today to conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, U.S. Attorney Eric Grant announced. According to court documents, Ruiz was a podiatrist at West Coast Podiatry Inc. (WCP), a podiatric medical practice. Aguirre was a sales representative that sold skin grafts to Ruiz and WCP. Ruiz purchased skin grafts from Aguirre and permitted Aguirre, who was not a licensed healthcare provider, to apply the skin grafts to Medicare and Medi-Cal beneficiaries. Ruiz and Aguirre face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Ways to Cut Overhead Without Cutting Staff
Here are nine practical ways to cut overhead without cutting staff.
8. Outsource routine administrative tasks
Not every task needs to be performed in-house. Appointment verification, follow-up calls, or routine paperwork can often be handled more cost-effectively by external services. The same Medical Economics article on the profit equation encourages practices to weigh what work truly needs internal attention and what can be shifted outward.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODIATRY) |
From: Kim G. Gauntt, DPM, MS
Excellent story! How may I ask, could it have hurt, to have the APMA “leadership” actually sit down and discuss the recent query about a different path for our residencies to be legitimized than what we have now. What is it that we don’t know? Why, on such an important topic, was the membership at large not invited to discuss before a decision was made? Loss of autonomy, really?
Was it not, just the week before, that our same APMA president was publishing a rebuttal letter to the orthopedic group who sorely misrepresented podiatry and our training in a public forum?
Would it not be much more difficult to deny our training if our programs were recognized by the same body as theirs? Just asking.
Kim G. Gauntt, DPM, MS, Hillsboro, OR

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (VALUE-BASED CARE) - PART 1A |
From: Lawrence Rubin, DPM
Adding some information to Dr. Freireich's post on value-based care and MSOs in general; a podiatry value-based "messenger model" Independent Practice Association (IPA) could help podiatrists avoid pitfalls associated with Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) and gain leverage in contract negotiations.
Unlike the ACO model, an IPA protects provider autonomy, aligns incentives towards profitability, and focuses on demonstrating collective value and cost-effectiveness through aggregated performance data. This allows the IPA to offer payers exclusively negotiated access to a high-performing network in exchange for maximal reimbursement rates.
Lawrence Rubin, DPM, Las Vegas, NV

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (VALUE-BASED CARE) - PART 1B |
From: Michael King, DPM
While I certainly understand the skepticism regarding the overwhelming alphabet soup of healthcare innovations, I wouldn’t characterize most of those acronyms as failures. Medicare Advantage (MA) has grown around 7% a year and now makes up the majority of our senior care. HMOs constitute the majority of MA, and thus HMOs also continue to grow. Patients selecting MA are what drives the growth of both. We can disagree with the new programs, dislike or even hate the changing landscape, but we cannot ignore the growth of these programs, the public commitments of every major health plan and CMS towards VBC, nor what this growth conveys about patient preferences.
Your last point, “They’re setting us up to fail again” is the very fear we all have. And this is the reason it is imperative to have a seat at the table of change rather than waiting and hoping CMS, UHC, and Aetna abandon their goals. We have meetings with CMS and every major national health plan routinely so that we can understand their new programs, and be at the forefront of change in a way that helps podiatry flourish and meets the payer’s goals. As your friend found out, not everyone can be a winner in the new VBC world (otherwise healthcare costs just keep rising!), so it is important to start paying attention to who is successful, learning the new rules of the road, and aligning yourself with the right partner.
The healthcare world is changing, and if we don’t participate in that change because we don’t like it, we will be left behind playing a game that someone else created without our input.
Michael King, DPM, Nashville, TN
