MD Podiatrist Reports Seeing More Burns from Barefoot Walking
Third-degree burns on the feet “could be devastating, they could be terrible,” said Priya Parthasarathy, DPM, a Silver Spring-based podiatrist. That’s especially true for children or people with underlying medical conditions such as diabetes or neuropathy, she said. Dr. Parthasarathy, a physician spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association, said travelers should invest in the proper footwear for their activity, whether that’s hiking shoes or even water shoes.

Dr. Parthasarathy said she will see patients who come in because of a painful spot on the bottom of their feet without realizing they suffered a burn. She asks if they’ve been at the beach, walking on pavement, or barefoot at the pool. “Especially with these really hot temperatures lately I’ve been seeing more burns,” she said.

NY Podiatrists and Students Volunteer at Long Island Fall Special Olympics
On September 21st, the Long Island Fall Games for the Special Olympics of New York was held at Cantiague Park. Craig Herman, DPM was in attendance as the Clinical Leader for the Fit Feet division of the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes Program. Free health screenings and education to Special Olympics athletes, their families, and coaches in a welcoming, fun environment were provided.

Dr. Herman is the current President of the Nassau Division of the New York State Podiatric Medical Association and Director of Podiatry for Community Healthcare Network. Many students from the third-year orthopedics rotation were present. As volunteers, the students assisted in performing physicals, biomechanical exams, gait exams, and shoe/sock evaluations for the athletes.

"There are Over 300 Distinct Foot and Ankle Conditions" : Indian Podiatrist
India has over 60 million people living with diabetes, and of these, 25% (around 15 million) develop diabetic foot ulcer (DFUs). Tragically, 50% of these cases become infected, and 20% (around 1.5 million) result in amputations. However, with timely intervention, the rate of amputations due to DFUs can be reduced to as low as 2%, potentially saving countless lives, as many patients do not survive post-amputation.

Tips for Navigating the ACO Landscape
If a medical practice is looking to join an ACO in 2025, they should start their considerations well in advance so they can stay ahead of this year’s August 1st deadline for participation in CMS models in 2025. This timeline allows for comprehensive research and analysis, ensuring that practices align with an ACO that best suits their needs. ACOs can also have a lot of similarities on paper, but with a deliberate approach, providers can avoid the pitfalls of rushing into a decision and instead focus on understanding what each ACO offers, how they manage and operate, and speak to references within the network.
1. Finding the right program track
One of the initial considerations for providers is determining the type of ACO program that aligns with their practice, including, among others, the ACO Realizing Equity, Access, and Community Health (REACH) or the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP), and the various tracks within each. Understanding the distinction between these two value-based programs is crucial for practices, particularly in how surpluses and deficits are calculated and the different payment models for primary care services (e.g. fee-for-service or monthly capitation payments). Additionally, providers must be aware that not all ACOs operate across both programs, with some exclusively offering ACO REACH or MSSP, or specific tracks in each, thus forcing providers into one of those programs rather than identifying which is best for the practice. Understanding the nuances of each program is essential for making an informed decision.

They have been making some significant cuts in expenditures and have plans to do more. The new leadership has voiced an understanding of where things are and where they need to go, which is exciting.
I think we would all love to see a national campaign in the future if that’s possible.
