PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
NJ Podiatrist Discusses Plantar Fasciitis

The foot. It's more than just the anchor of your body, motor of your mobility, modeler of high fashion, and occasional object of sensual fetish. To hear it described by Dr. Richard Rosen, chief of podiatry at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, it's more like a giant slingshot. Constantly loading and reloading, firing and re-firing, eventually, something's got to give. That something, in medical terms, is what is known as the plantar fascia.

Dr. Richard Rosen

"It functions like a rubber band. Every time you step, it stretches," Rosen says. "When you get off your foot, it contracts." When that rubber band becomes stretched to the outermost limits, you have the condition plantar fasciitis. "The way I explain it to patients in my office," Rosen says, "is that the rubber band becomes inflamed. If you were to take a rubber band at your desk and stretch it a thousand times, it would lose its elasticity and eventually tear."

MEETING NOTICES
Third Annual ASPS Surgical Conference Held in Baltimore

The American Society of Podiatric Surgeons (ASPS) recently hosted the Third Annual ASPS Surgical Conference in Baltimore, MD. The conference was held September 11-12 and offered up to 14 CECH for attendees. 2015 was the first year the conference was held in Baltimore. The conference opened with a two-hour wound care lecture track, followed by an in-depth look at surgical complications in hallux valgus. The day wrapped up with a risk management lecture, providing conference attendees the opportunity to earn a discount on their PICA insurance premiums. Day two of the conference covered trauma topics and dealing with post-traumatic arthritis, arthroscopy, and PTTD topics.

(L-R) Drs. Emilio Goez, Stephen Palmer, David Yeager, Andrew Belis, and Khalid Husain

As with many ASPS hosted events, students and residents were invited to attend the conference with complimentary registration. A podiatric medical assistants seminar was held in conjunction with the conference, hosted by the American Society of Podiatric Medical Assistants (ASPMA).  The Fourth Annual ASPS Surgical Conference will be held at the same venue in Baltimore, September 22-23, 2016.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY
Eleven Things to Never Say to Patients - Part 8

8. "Just learn to live with it."

Stress has the potential to severely and negatively impact a patient's quality of life and prognosis, as well as hinder the healing process.

And internalized stress is often what happens when a patient is informed she'll have to live with a condition long-term. The patient's emotional response can potentially trigger depression too, which only further complicates treatment plans and outcomes. - Murray Grossan, MD

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL/LEGAL) - PART 1A
From: John Chisholm, DPM

This is the type of problem that can be dealt with quickly and effectively by your local APMA/state local component association. Most state associations, in my case the California Podiatric Medical Association, have the knowledge, experience, and, if necessary, legal resources to correct any discriminatory position of your local hospital.

It is also a good example of why every podiatrist, in practice or retired, should belong to APMA and their state component association. In order to do this kind of work for its members, APMA needs everyone to pull their fair share of the load, and this includes the financial support of its dues-paying members. If you are an APMA member, contact your state component association and they will get this matter straightened out quickly. If you are not a member, then join today.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Steven Selby Blanken, DPM

As an owner of an ASC myself, I can understand the costs of various hardware. Cannulated screws can range from $110-400/screw. Whereas standard, self-tapping, non-cannulated Synthes screws can range from $25-35/screw. Some companies will sell generic cortical screws for Austin/Kalish types (I prefer not to use the word Chevron as this is used by most of our foot and ankle orthopedic society counterparts) for a range of $9-15/screw.

In my opinion, in most areas, screw fixation for standard Austin/Kalish type osteotomies is the standard of care for fixation versus K-wire fixation. If your surgery center is demanding hardware that is not standard of care, you may want to re-evaluate your situation and agreement with your center.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Bob Hatcher, DPM

If you are looking for screw fixation but your desire is to keep costs down, the old standard Synthes screws are cheap - the last time I checked about $8-10 apiece. And they work quite well.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP

RE: Outrageous Shoes of the Day

Architect and world economic forum ‘global leader of tomorrow’ Fernando Romero has conceived ‘ammonite’ for United Nude, a shoe that uses the most cutting-edge 3D printing technology, yet results in an organically shaped object that could have been found in nature, like a fossil buried on the bottom of the ocean.

Is this shoe from the past or the future?

Each sculptural heel was 3D printed using SelectiveLaser Sintering in a hard nylon and all-new soft rubber material, making a 'fully functioning' shoe.
