IN Podiatrist Discusses Changes in 30 Years in Practice

Dr. Carl Goodin Jr. has put his best foot forward in Delhi Township for 30 years. The podiatrist is celebrating three decades of service for his offices in both Delhi and Lawrenceburg, IN. “I really enjoy what I do,” he said. “I enjoy working with my patients to make them feel better.”

Dr. Carl Goodin Jr.

The 57-year-old said a majority of his patients see him for heel pain. Goodin said that while foot problems are routine, in his years of practice, the treatments have continually advanced. “It’s like night and day. The technology has completely changed and improved patient care,” he said. “For example, for bunions, we used to stick a pin through the bone that would be coming out of the skin. Now there are screws that can hold that bone together much better and patients aren’t walking around with something sticking out of their foot for six weeks.”

CA Podiatrist Teams up With Soccer Legend for 2nd Annual Charity Event

(L-R) Brandi Chastain and Dr. Joan Oloff

Several dozen up-and-coming soccer stars lived out a dream when they were coached by San Jose's Brandi Chastain and other soccer greats. Chastain, 43, and a dozen ex-teammates from Olympic and World Cup teams offered tips to girls -- from preschoolers to young teens -- at an afternoon clinic at San Jose Municipal Stadium that raised funds for her ReachuP Foundation, which Chastain co-founded with Los Gatos podiatrist, Dr. Joan Oloff.

E-HEALTH NEWS

HIMSS Revisits National Patient Identifier

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) is asking Congress to study patient identification issues, hinting at the need for another look at the controversial national patient identifier while not specifically asking that an identifier be part of the study. HIMSS also asked Congress to review and "harmonize" federal and state health information privacy laws.

The request on patient identification was part of the Chicago-based health information technology trade group's legislative agenda, developed for its 2012 policy summit during Health IT Week in Washington this month. Meanwhile, an update to the HIPAA privacy rule necessitated by more stringent privacy provisions in the American Recovery and Reinvestment of 2009 has remained in bureaucratic limbo since March.

HEALTHCARE and POLITICS

Obama, Ryan Court AARP Crowd

Weeks before the Nov. 6 elections, President Barack Obama and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI.) sought the senior vote when they laid out their respective positions on Medicare and Social Security at an AARP convention in New Orleans. Both the president and the GOP vice presidential nominee repeated familiar themes about their policy positions when they addressed the nation's largest group representing seniors. Obama simultaneously touted the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and dismissed Ryan's plan for Medicare reform, while Ryan insisted the plan he proposes will save the federal healthcare program well into the future.

During his speech, Ryan said his plan—which would let seniors choose between traditional fee-for-service Medicare and a list of private health plans—dates back to the Clinton administration and has support among Democrats. The House Budget Committee chairman also talked about the Independent Payment Advisory Board, a 15-member panel that the Affordable Care Act established to control Medicare cost growth. “We propose to put 50 million seniors, not 15 bureaucrats, in charge of their own decisions,” Ryan said. “Our plan empowers seniors.”

SUCCESS TIPS FOR THE MASTERS

Editor's Note: PM News is proud to present excerpts from Meet the Masters.

Bret Ribotsky, DPM: What should podiatrists be doing to build a referral practice?

Dr. Leonard Schwartz

Len Schwartz, DC: When you have a patient come in with a diabetic ulcer, for example, I would ask you to say, “Gladys, let me ask you a question. I’m just curious. Do you have other friends or family members that also have these same foot problems?" You’re not asking for a referral. You’re simply asking them whether they know other people who have the same problems. You should expect at least a third, if not half of your patients to say, “You know what, I do.” Then you have an opportunity to ask them whether they would be willing to share information about you and what you’ve done for them in your practice, in your office.

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday night at 9 PM (EST). In observance of the Jewish High Holy day, there will be no broadcast this week. You can register for future events by clicking here

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

3 Ways to Keep Team Members on Track

You can talk with your employees all day long and still fail to communicate the most important elements of their work. Use these three techniques to reach your team members in meaningful ways:
1. Define key results. In objective, measurable terms, spell out what each employee must do to be successful.
2. Require weekly reports. Have employees submit a brief weekly report to keep you up-to-date about the practice. Tip: Learn more by asking employees to identify a “High” and “Low” point of their week.
3. Tell stories. Inspire team members by relating the stories of how your practice developed and has succeeded over the years and right now.
