PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Veteran Praises NV Podiatrist Who Treated Him

The following remarks were made by a veteran at President Donald J. Trump's signing of H.R. 5895, "I wish to share with you a personal story. In the last five years, I have had a bleeding ulcer on my toe that we’ve not been able to fix. And because of VA Choice, I’ve been able to — with the support of the Veterans Administration, I’ve been able to find a podiatrist who operated on me 10 days ago.

Dr. Wesley Lyon

And the man did something that blew my mind. I got home. I took off the boot. There was a little bit of blood, and I called. He came and made a house call. Who does that? (Laughter.) Not anymore, right? Anyway, Dr. Wesley Lyon and his staff are treating me."

AAPSM Presents Annual Awards

Each year, the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM) presents awards to people who help influence and advance Podiatric Sports Medicine. The recipient of the John D. Pagliano Golden Foot award was Gary Hall, Jr., who won 5 Olympic Gold medals in his swimming career despite being a Type 1 diabetic. Gary now advocates about the importance of diabetes and exercise.

The President's award was presented to Dr. Mark Cucuzella, a Primary Care Doctor from West Virginia. Mark treats his patients with exercise and nutritional advice to battle obesity and Diabetes. Additionally, both honorees promoted podiatrists as being at the forefront in treatment and prevention of dabetes and the complications of the disease. Dick Gilbert, DPM, one of the founding members of the AAPSM was also honored with a Special Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr Gilbert was the team podiatrist for the NFL's San Diego Chargers for over 20 years and is a pioneer in our profession.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1
More School Counselors Needed: CA Podiatrist

The Central Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce held a luncheon on Sept. 13 focused on mental healthcare in Palm Beach County. Lori Lane Hansen, DPM, a podiatric surgeon with the LA Podiatry Group and chair of the Central Palm Beach County Chamber Medical Board of Governors, spoke at the luncheon.

Dr. Lori Lane Hansen

Dr. Hansen pointed out that there are now more safety officers than counselors in schools, which she claimed contributed to the Parkland shooter “slipping through the cracks.” Hansen cited the American School Counselors Association recommendation of a ratio of one counselor per 250 students needing to be met.

MEETING NEWS
AAPSM Holds Stand Alone Meeting

The 5th rendition of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM) Stand Alone was perhaps the best. AAPSM Fellow Brian Fullem, DPM resurrected the meeting in 2014, and every year AAPSM tries to improve. Co-chair and AAPSM Immediate Past President Amol Saxena, DPM  helped bring in some of the top sports doctors in the world.

AAPSM members went on a morning run led by Olympian and American record holder Shannon Rowbury (middle in white Nike shirt). Dr. Maggie Fournier is to Shannon's right with Dr. Amol Saxena to her left.

Over 160 attendees from the U.S., Europe, and Australia enjoyed scientific lectures, panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and a surgical lab. There were podiatrists, orthopedic surgeons, primary care MDs, and PTs presenting and in attendance.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
VA Podiatrists Resign or Retire Amid MiMedx Scandal

More dominoes have fallen in the ongoing investigations into financial dealings of Marietta-based MiMedx. The Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Minneapolis had parted ways with four podiatrists and a dermatologist over improprieties involving MiMedx products. The VA had proposed firing all five doctors, but all opted to either resign or retire, a spokesman said.

The details of what occurred in Minneapolis aren’t clear. The VA spokesman there, Ralph Heussner, provided an emailed statement that the doctors “engaged in behavior that is not in line with the norms and values of the department.” The “personnel moves” will leave the facility without any podiatric services for the next two to three months, the statement said. Patients needing routine care will be routed to outside clinics at the VA’s expense.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 1A
From: Richard Willner, DPM, Jeffrey Kass, DPM

While the reality is that the Data Bank reports to the NPDB are not meant to ever be removed except for a very limited number of occasions, based on the few facts that I have read in your publication of this date, I think that this podiatrist may fall into that area.

To begin to understand the NPDB, I suggest reading my latest article published on the NPDB.  It was published in BC Magazine (originally called Billing and Coding Magazine).

Richard Willner, DPM, New Orleans, LA

Name Withheld asks a valid question. If the complaint against him was found as “without merit,” then I agree with name withheld that nothing should be put on their record. If something is then [reported], the accuser effectively “wins”. This is outright wrong! This is something that should be corrected and changed. Why is the doctor always wrong, even when innocent? I say it time after time - why do doctors take this constant abuse? When issues arise that we may previously were unaware of, why doesn’t leadership attempt to evoke change before history repeats itself? I empathize with the poster.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 1B
From: Donald R Blum, DPM, JD

When a complaint is filed with TSBPME/TDLR, Name Withheld should have been notified of the complaint. Assuming it was from a patient, you would have received a letter requesting a copy of chart notes and x-rays (at your expense).  At that point, you would have been made aware of who was the complainant. At that point, you have a limited [time] to forward the information to the TSBPME/TDLR.

Typically, your Medical Liability Company (I know PICA offers this service/benefit) will offer a defense for board complaints, or you can try to resolve this yourself. My issue to you is whether the information about the board complaint is whether it come from the National Practitioner Data Bank or from the TSPME/TDLR?  Did you tell the hospital that a complaint had been filed, the nature of the complaint, and that it had been resolved with finding the complaint showed no merit? You might consider going the NPDB website and do a self-search. If there is incorrect information, see if they have a mechanism to correct that faulty info. Did the NPDB show that the complaint was resolved finding no merit and was dismissed?

My recommendation has always been to send a letter to the TSPME/TDLR requesting a copy of the complaint with allegations filed with the board.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS) - PART 1A
From: James R. Christina, DPM

While APMA very much appreciates the clarification from the editor that the association has never advocated for an MD degree for podiatrists, I would like to offer some additional information to Dr. Smith and anyone who may not be fully informed about APMA’s direction. APMA has always been and will always be the association for every podiatrist. Whether you practice conservative care, reconstructive surgery, or something in between, APMA represents your interests and delivers resources to support your career. In fact, APMA recently spent more than a year on a comprehensive brand audit to identify gaps in services and ensure that we’re delivering value for every member, regardless of practice type or tenure.

We believe the wide variety of practice options available to podiatrists could play a significant role in overcoming the challenges to student recruitment. In 2018, the APMA House of Delegates directed APMA to devote significant resources (both financial and otherwise) to student recruitment. APMA has published an initial plan (www.apma.org/recruitmentplan), and we are completing a massive market research effort that is the first in the profession to take a scientific approach to uncovering perceptions of podiatry among pre-health students and current podiatry students. We are eager to put our findings to use as we produce data-driven messages and materials for the entire profession to use in promoting podiatry to prospective students. APMA is an advocate for podiatry—and the future of podiatry—in all its forms. If you are a DPM, APMA is for you.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS) - PART 1B
From: Richard Bloch, JD

I am responding to the editorial in the September issue of Podiatry Management. (“Podiatry’s Continuing Identity Crisis”). The Maryland Podiatric Medical Association (MPMA) had a bill introduced in this year’s legislative session (January-April 2018) to change the term “podiatrist” to “podiatric physician” in the Maryland Code. Although the bill did not pass, we will continue this effort. With this in mind, there are several concerns regarding the editorial.

The survey apparently did not include the term “podiatric physician”, yet Dr. Block concludes it “would be appropriate [to change to podiatric physician] only with a...
