PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
NY Podiatrist Discusses Nutrition and Foot Health

Eating the right foods can help keep your feet healthy. "When most people think about nutrition and their health, they have no trouble associating the foods they eat with weight loss or heart health," says Sherri Greene, DPM, a podiatrist in New York City who practices holistic foot-care. However, your diet affects many other parts of your body, including your feet. "When I explain to people that your feet are connected to the rest of your body, and what you put into your body is what makes up your body, they're like, 'Wow!' When they feel better after they change their diet, then they get it," she says.

Dr. Sherri Greene

One problem linked to nutrition that can affect your feet is inflammation, Dr. Greene says. Certain foods can increase chemicals in your body that cause tissue inflammation. This inflammation could appear in your foot as plantar fasciitis, which causes pain in the thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot, in your heel, or elsewhere in your foot.

HEALTHCARE NEWS
Baby Boomers Who are Unhappy with Their Care Tend to Tell Their Physician

Millennials Tend to Tell Everyone Else

Millennials may soon outnumber the Baby Boomers in your practice, and they tend to approach healthcare professionals with different customer service expectations according to a global patient survey of 3,000 people conducted by Nuance Communications and reported in the August edition of their Art of Medicine series. The 81 million U.S. residents of Millennial age (15-34) are nearly twice as likely as seniors over age 65, to seek doctors based on recommendations from family and friends.

More than half of Millennials surveyed look online for health information before they come to the office. When seeing the doctor, they rank time for discussion and verbal explanation of recommendations as the most important factors in their satisfaction with medical care. When they feel rushed or dissatisfied with care, more than 60% are likely to tell their friends rather than complain to their providers; those frustrations are likely to register on social media and in online ratings of professionals. In contrast, if Boomers are not satisfied with care, more than half indicate they would tell their healthcare professional directly.

E-HEALTH NEWS
Mobile Devices Are a ‘Silent Killer’ Of PHI; BYOD Policies Are a Must

Mobile devices in the workplace are ubiquitous and healthcare organizations, more now than ever, are facing the challenge of incorporating personal devices into regular workflow as access to protected health information (PHI) expands and CMS continues its push for interoperability. Stage Three of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Program is set to take effect in 2017, with all providers required to meet its EHR and interoperability requirements in 2018.

That’s a big reason for the jump in bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies in healthcare, according to Ron Calhoun, healthcare practice leader for Aon Risk Solutions, who says that until now the industry has not been able to adapt to the trend fast enough. Calhoun thinks the interoperability movement and the value-based care movement add up to a “perfect storm” for healthcare providers in terms of privacy risk, because not only are they dealing with the headache of securing Web-accessible clinical data, but now are dealing with the additional challenge of monitoring multiple contractors and an endless number of mobile devices.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY
Eleven Things to Never Say to Patients - Part 7

7. "Don't believe what you read on the Internet."

With the abundance of information available on the Internet, the likelihood that patients will stumble across misinformation is a prominent concern.

Physicians can empower and support patients by encouraging them to research their health conditions. However, it's critical that patients have access to credible information. So instead of directing them to the Internet in general, provide patients with a list of trusted medical websites. -  Barbara B. Tobias, family physician

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)

Query:  Limitation of Surgical Privileges

I am a solo practitioner planning to retire soon and have begun to limit the services I perform. I have communicated with a local hospital administration about a young, well-trained, post-residency podiatrist who could be a real asset to them. They have expressed an interest in hiring such a one to perform my surgical cases and to build a practice here.

A problem has sidelined this situation: MDs of the local hospital’s medical executive board refuse to give any of the podiatrists more than forefoot and midfoot surgical privileges. Only hospital privileged MDs can: 1. Co-sign the podiatrist’s H&Ps; and 2. be the admitting/attending doctor for any hospital admittances needed by the podiatrist. The hospital administration does not have a vote on this board. Does anyone have any ideas, besides a discrimination suit, to move this process forward?

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Standard of Care for Bunion Hardware

I recently had a discussion with a colleague regarding standard of care for fixation of a chevron-type head osteotomy for bunion repair. In these days of lower reimbursements to surgery centers, many have tightened restrictions on the use of certain hardware. In a surgery center I use, for example, for a Medicare patient, they want me to use a standard K-wire to fixate an Austin bunionectomy.

I have done this for years, and don't have problems doing this. However, a colleague of mine doesn't think this is standard of care (he suggests screw fixation is.). I know the concept of "standard of care" and that it varies with geography, etc., but please share your thoughts.
