AT THE COLLEGES
NYCPM Residency Fair Introduces Seniors to Dozens of Programs

Days before NYCPM welcomed the Class of 2019, the College hosted its annual Residency Fair, at which members of the Class of 2016 have a chance to learn about the programs they might want to join; at the Fair, the programs were often represented by NYCPM graduates. According to Dean of Student Services and Enrollment Management Lisa Lee, “it was great to hear how much our current students are viewed as strong candidates and in demand.” More than 50 programs in hospitals and medical centers were represented.

Joshua Lisonbee (2017), Olga Chagin (2017), and Adam Falivene (2015)

The following students served as Residency Fair coordinators: Abigail Dunklee, Alisha Poonja and Yu Ting Saw, all Class of 2017. The Fair’s sponsors were Valeant, Bako, Lenox Hill Radiology, Mega Air and the NYCPM Alumni Relations Association. Following the Fair was an alumni reception that welcomed our graduates back and allowed them to socialize and catch up with faculty and friends.

HEALTHCARE NEWS
Number of People at High Risk of Fracture Set to Double by 2040

A study finds that within just a few decades, more than 300 million men and women worldwide will be at high risk of fracture – placing a serious burden on healthcare systems, especially in Asia. A study from the University of Southampton and Sheffield Medical School in the UK projects a dramatic increase in the burden of fragility fractures within the next three decades. By 2040, approximately 319 million people will be at high risk of fracture – double the numbers considered at high risk today.

In this first study to estimate the global burden of disease in terms of fracture probability, the researchers quantified the number of individuals worldwide aged 50 years or more at high risk of fracture in 2010 and projected figures for 2040. The calculations were based on data derived from FRAX, the most widely used risk assessment algorithm.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY
Eleven Things to Never Say to Patients - Part 6

6. "I completely understand where you're coming from."

While physicians should empathize with patients, it's impossible to understand their exact experience. Even when a patient presents as a textbook case, there are other factors at play that make a particular situation unique.

Socioeconomic disparities and readiness to learn are just two of the factors that heavily influence where patients are in their medical journey. Physicians should simply meet patients where they are, while seeking ways to improve quality of life. Assumptions that you understand exact patient experiences are best avoided. - Lauren R. Cummings

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: ICD-10 Coding: Abscess Foot

When coding for the treatment of a foot abscess, do you also include B95-97 to identify the organism likely causing the abscess?

Bill Hughes DPM, Council Bluffs, IA

Response: For all of the ICD-10 L02- (cutaneous abscess, furuncle and carbuncle) codes, we are directed to "Use additional code to identify organism (B95-B96)".

If you know the organism based on culture results, I suggest you choose the appropriate code to identify that organism. If you do not know the organism, I suggest that you do not guess, but rather do not code any organism at all.

Jeffrey Lehrman, DPM, Springfield, PA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)

There have been a lot of discussions on this topic all over the Internet. The bottom line seems to be that the default installation of Windows 10 is NOT HIPAA compliant. On the Microsoft website under personal data we collect, it clearly states that they "Collect content of your files and communications", including the body of emails, as well as instant messages. To me, that says if you have patient information on your computer, it will also be on the Microsoft computer, and it is not compliant.

There are settings to make it more secure. I am not sure if they bring Windows 10 up to HIPAA standards, but they are easy to implement. See ZD Net atricle and Wired article  for details.
