KSUCPM Reducing Tuition Payments
Some Kent State University students are going to see a reduction in tuition rates. On Wednesday, the Kent State Board of Trustees approved a revised tuition rate for students enrolled at the university's College of Podiatric Medicine. The Board approved reducing tuition for the College by nearly $14,000 for Ohio resident students, a decrease of more than 30% from the current tuition rate.
|
Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine |
The Board also approved decreasing tuition for the College's out-of-state students by $3,139. Yearly tuition for in-state podiatric medicine students will drop to $32,095 from $45,961. This tuition reduction makes Kent State's College of Podiatric Medicine tuition the lowest among all 11 U.S. podiatric colleges for Ohioans.

CA Podiatrist Artist Premiers “The Art of Code Switching” Exhibition in NYC
Fresh off the heels of his last sold-out show in New York, ‘Donald and Victor: Under the Influence,’ visionary artist Don Hershman, DPM is set to turn his passion once again into purpose with his newest exhibition of 20 paintings entitled “The Art of Code Switching,” set to debut on Thursday, September 21st, 2023 at the renowned Salomon Arts Gallery in Manhattan’s Tribeca district.
|
Dr. Don Hershman |
Originally trained as a board-certified podiatric surgeon in the early '80s, Dr. Hershman reflects on his own life as a gay man of an earlier generation where code switching was clearly linked to his survival. “When I began my formal residency training in the early '80s, I had to relocate to the south, forcing me back into the closet. Creating these new paintings took me on a journey back to a time where there was no political correctness or recourse, easily fired or shunned if it were revealed that I was gay. After residency, I relocated to San Francisco and worked as a podiatric surgeon in an atmosphere engulfed by the AIDS epidemic, where young men often were not only hiding their sexual orientation, but their HIV status as well. They were constantly code-switching without even knowing it.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
8 Tips to Improve Patient Satisfaction
It’s more important than ever to be able to track and monitor patient satisfaction and take steps to make improvements to meet the changing expectations of patients. To effectively gauge what patients think and identify areas for improvement, here are best practices to follow.
3. Get hard data - Avoid creating open-ended survey questions. It’s appropriate to have a spot at the end for additional comments, but you want to be able to easily analyze the data. Use multiple choice and yes or no questions. For example, don’t use, “Tell us what you thought of the wait time.” Instead, ask, “Was the wait time reasonable, yes or no.”

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Mayo Bunionectomy
I have a patient with a large bunion deformity. He has ulceration at the medial 1st metatarsal head that measures 2 cm x 3 cm. There is associated slough and pain at the ulcer. I plan to excise the ulceration and remove the first metatarsal head and repair the ulceration by layered closure.
What is the proper coding? I was initially planning on CPT 28111 with complex wound repair (excising ulceration and layered closure), but then I considered coding it as a bunionectomy might be best. Since the bunion surgery CPT codes were modified a few years ago, I don’t see a description that matches Mayo bunionectomy. (Which I thought was CPT 28292.) Any help would be appreciated.
Allen Sater, DPM, Jupiter, FL
Response: You describe the surgical plan to “remove the first metatarsal head.” That makes me want to consider CPT 28111 defined as: Ostectomy, complete excision; first metatarsal head. It appears to be the most accurate and specific description of what you are performing. The excision of the ulcer with the closure would be considered inherent to the procedure.
Jon Goldsmith, DPM, Omaha, NE

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
Dr. Bardfeld and I go back to the good old days when doctors were independent and we were paid well for our services. We charged patients and no one had druthers about writing us a check for our services. Today all doctors are at the mercy of insurance companies and hospital or corporate owned practices. Two GI doctors I know as well as a prominent cardiologist opted for early retirement after their practices were taken over by a hospital. The hospital had no difficulty however in filling those spots with young guys finishing their fellowships.
What needs to be done is to assess whether young doctors working in and out of hospitals or for corporate entities are happy with their lives as it stands in 2023. If they are happy, then unionization is a pipe dream. On the other hand, if most doctors, especially young ones, are not happy with the way things are going, then there may be room for organized protest in some form or actual unionization.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 B |
From: Lawrence Kassan, DPM
I agree with Dr. Bardfeld's post regarding doctors going on strike. In fact, I recommended it in a post several months ago. Interestingly, there were doctors at a Brooklyn Hospital who went on strike earlier this year. They must have settled the strike VERY quickly because it was in and out of the news within a day. I think it would be interesting for this forum to take a poll as to how many DPMs would be willing to test the water with a one week strike that targets a specific insurance carrier.
Hopefully, this would serve as a wake-up call to these insurance CEOs making multimillion dollar bonuses that they only exist because we agree to participate with them. Obviously, whatever we have been doing up until this point has not been working.
Lawrence Kassan, DPM, Philadelphia, PA

NON-PODIATRISTS OFFERING PODIATRY SERVICES |
From: Jared Clifford, DPM
I have some context to provide for the "WA nurse to provide podiatry services" news item. I have been at Prosser Memorial Hospital for the past 16 years as the only podiatrist. We are a small critical access hospital in a town of 6,000, but we see patients from several surrounding communities. The next nearest podiatrists are 45 miles to the west and 30 miles to the east.
Over the past couple of years I have gotten much busier. The hospital and I have been looking for a solution to maintain a manageable patient load, but also serve the demands of the community without making patients wait too long to see me. While I am very busy, we're not quite busy enough to support...
