IL Podiatrist Provides Foot Care Tips for Diabetics
Don’t let feet get too dry or too damp. Sprinkling talcum powder or cornstarch between the toes will absorb moisture that can break down skin. Using cream or lotion on the tops and bottoms of the feet keeps them from drying and cracking, which allows bacteria to enter. Podiatrist Stephanie Wu, DPM, MSc, recommends, “Wear socks to bed after applying your cream of choice to facilitate better cream absorption.”
|
Dr. Stephanie Wu |
Dr. Wu says, “Diabetic socks are for people who have lost protective sensation. The bottoms and toes should be white so you can see if there is any bleeding or if a foreign object is sticking to the foot or shoe.”

These include thermography, diagnostic ultrasound, and tenoscopy.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
NY Podiatrist Explains What to Look for in a Gym Shoe
It’s important that your gym shoes have enough structural support, in addition to absorbing shock. “For example,” says podiatrist Bruce Pinker, DPM of Progressive Footwear in New York, “aerobics classes require front and back and lateral movements that are short and quick, so footwear with proper support is essential to perform these exercises. Zumba classes may involve jumping, so proper cushioning in footwear is helpful for this activity to help prevent injury.” The dynamic duo of support meets responsive cushioning helps prevent injury and promotes better athletic function.
|
Dr. Bruce Pinker |
If you plan to move around quickly—especially on slick floors or wet grounds—you’ll want a shoe that can offer you some grip (no one wants to slip mid-Zumba class). Injury prevention is top priority here, says Dr. Pinker. “Traction is necessary to prevent slippage. It is very helpful, especially for outdoor activity, when one runs or walks on uneven terrain.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Tips for Hiring and Retaining Medical Practice Staff
Tip #3. Be Precise
This one is on you as the employer. Describe the open position in exact terms, including title, tasks, and responsibilities. This will help both you and potential candidates gauge how well they may thrive in the role. It can also reduce the chances you’ll hire someone who works one day and then disappears the next because the candidate didn’t understand the requirements of the job.
Pre-employment skills assessment is another useful tactic. Outside companies can screen candidate skills for a price, or you can develop your own role-specific tests. What are candidates’ communication skills like? What is their comfort level with software? How good are they at problem-solving?

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Neuroma Injection Reimbursement
Medicare pays approximately $40 more for an E/M 99213 versus an injection for a neuroma. Can you give the injection and only bill the E/M 99213?
Codingline Member
Response: 1) What CPT code are you using for the neuroma injection? CPT 64455 is the code to use for a “Morton’s neuroma.”
2) Bill for the services you provided AND documented. Did you evaluate and manage the nerve or did you inject a nerve?
3) Manipulating codes for the sole purpose of being paid more could be considered abusive billing.
4) When in doubt, refer to #2

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) |
RE: Treatment of Warts with Needle-Free Injection of Fluorouracil
From: Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH
Warts, a very common infectious skin disease caused by human papillomavirus has been treated with several pharmacological agents (e.g., salicylic acid, cryosurgery, fluorouracil (FU), and bleomycin). However, the treatment of warts remains a challenge because of unsatisfying results and sometimes painful processes. An article by B.M. Yu Wu and Fei Wang Fei Wang, MD, Department of Dermatology, Zhongda Hospital, Southeast University, No. 87, Dingjiaqiao, Gulou District, Nanjing 210000, China describes two patients with warts who were successfully treated with needle-free injection of FU, a method for warts not previously reported.
One of the patients was a 25-year-old man with an 8 mm in diameter wart of 2 months’ duration on the big toe of his right foot. The patient was treated with an intralesional injection of FU with a needle-free injector (Injex; Aijex Pharma) which works on a spring mechanism that is drawn back and then released by hitting a trigger, pushing a...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Brian Kashan, DPM
I am strongly in favor of a strike by all physicians. Unfortunately, the world has changed and not all physicians have the same issues as others. Those of us in private practice are the ones who are dealing with the overregulation by the government, insurance company policies, and financial pressures. Today, our profession has been divided into hospital/institutional-based docs and private practice docs. Any attempt at a strike would most likely fail, as unless there was a total strike, the effects would be limited. Teacher strikes, railroad strikes, etc., seem to carry more weight and fear than a doctor strike would.
The public sees doctors as rich, spoiled brats. What do we have to complain about? We can't empathize with ...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) |
From: Kevin A. Kirby, DPM
I have been reading the comments on custom foot orthoses and different theories of biomechanics here on PM News for the last week and feel I need to offer some additional thoughts on the subject. I am well aware of all the different podiatric biomechanics theories and know very well the individuals who promote their own orthosis lab’s method of making foot orthoses as being the “best orthoses” for all individuals. With that in mind, I recommend that any time a new theory or foot orthosis technique is being promoted, the podiatrist needs to be very skeptical of these new ideas and techniques before they “jump in with both feet” believing that they have now found the newest and best “foot orthosis guru.”
One of the most disturbing comments I saw in this thread was the comment: “I believe in the MASS theory so much that I have told my son...
