Diabetes and PAD Go Hand-in-Hand: TX Podiatrist
Dr. Kris Ford, a podiatrist in San Antonio said about PAD, "When you talk about diabetes and peripheral artery disease, it goes hand-in-hand,"
|
Dr. Chris Ford |
Ford said San Antonio is the epicenter of diabetes. He is part of the effort to get the word out about PAD to residents, especially those on the South Side, before the disease can cause amputations and possibly death.

PODIATRIC ECONOMICS |
Podiatry Ranks #29 on List of Best 100 Jobs
US News & World Report just released its rankings of the 100 Best Jobs in 2018. To determine its rankings, US News looked at professions with the highest median salaries, lowest unemployment rates, and greatest amount of recent growth. It also considered research on the stress levels, flexibility, and work-life balance associated with each job.
Coming in at #29 is podiatrist. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that podiatry is poised to grow by 10 percent from 2016 to 2026, resulting in 1,100 new jobs. Since the U.S. population is both increasing and aging, the BLS predicts that more people will have foot- and ankle-related ailments. The diabetes epidemic is also driving the job growth, since diabetics often suffer from foot problems. Podiatrists rank #14 in "Best Paying Jobs".

RELEVANT RESEARCH |
Botulinum Type A Toxin Effective for Juvenile Plantar Hyperhidrosis: Study
Plantar hyperhidrosis can have severe social effects on children and adolescents. Therapeutic options include antiperspirants and surgical interventions (e.g., sympathectomy). Botulinum type A toxin is approved for axillary hyperhidrosis in adults only. The aim of the study was the determination of effect and safety of botulinum type A toxin in plantar hyperhidrosis in juvenile patients.
Conclusion: Botulinum type A toxin seems to be a safe secondary treatment option for plantar hyperhidrosis in adolescents aged 12 and older. A dose of 75-100 U per sole resulted in a good therapeutic effect of variable duration in most patients. There were no severe side-effects.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Get Your Website to the Top of Google Rankings — and Stay There - Part 6
6. Post fresh and genuine content
Google’s algorithm prefers websites with original content. In order to effectively implement your SEO strategy, it is essential to create and share engaging content that will help connect your medical practice to its target audience. The Google algorithm is intelligent enough to identify stuffed keywords and duplicate content. This means you cannot overload your site with keywords or copy content from other websites and trick the search engines into giving your healthcare website a better ranking.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
RE: Undoing Damage from Dismissed Allegations
From: Name Withheld
I had a board complaint [against me] during the time that the Texas Podiatric Medical Board (TPMB) was moved to the Texas Department of Licensing (TDLR). I was notified of the complaint but advised I could not have any further information and the 'prosecutor' would evaluate the case. I asked for the information, stating they could remove the complainant’s name, but the TDLR claimed that under the statue, I was not entitled to that information. Several weeks later, I received a letter that stated "the complaint was resolved and it was found to be without merit – dismissed."
Later in the year, however, when applying to a hospital the 'allegation of complaint' showed up in the hospital's search of the data bank and other entities. My question is this: if an allegation is made against you and it is dismissed as unfounded, why should the allegation be reported to entities where you are trying to apply for hospital staff membership and to insurance companies? It seems very unlawful to me, but I'm not a lawyer. Any help or advice appreciated.
Name Withheld
Editor's comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. According to the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB), "If you are the subject of an NPDB report, you may add or edit a statement at any time to provide any additional information you would like included with the report. However, you may not modify, correct, or void the report - only the reporting entity listed in Section A of the report is permitted to do so.
Your Subject Statement becomes part of the report and remains with the report unless you (the subject of the report) edits or removes it. The statement is sent to the reporting entity listed in section A of the report, all queriers who received a copy of the report within the past three years, and is included in future query responses."

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) |
From: Alan Sherman, DPM
I wanted to respond to the message from Gary Smith, DPM, which was very negative toward current podiatric education, and contained some inaccuracies. First of all, while the number of applicants to podiatry schools has declined in recent years, and this is a big problem for us, applications have actually gone up for medical schools (increasing by 6.2% from 2015 to 2016), and they have become more competitive.
I do agree with his statement, “Podiatry was much more marketable when graduates could choose to be a podiatrist or a podiatric surgeon.” Our drive to make every podiatrist an advanced foot surgeon, which has been a front cover selling point used by the schools to attract...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS) |
From: Christopher Smith, DPM
Thank you, Dr. Block, for your insights into the identity crisis within podiatric medicine (or should I just say “podiatry”?).
I don’t want to sound angry, but I am frustrated by the direction of the APMA in their pursuit of the MD degree for podiatrists. Your data would suggest that the “surgeons” are directing that organization and they have an agenda that does not reflect podiatry in general. I hope your editorial starts a dialogue. I am proud of the initials after my name. I started my professional training when we were “chiropodists” and I watched us grow, evolve and mature. Alas, the egos of a minority are forcing an agenda on the majority.
Christopher Smith, DPM, Ferndale, WA
Editor's note: The APMA has never advocated for the MD degree.

RE: Patients Say the Darnest Things
An elderly male patient came in today with an ingrown toenail. During the procedure, he commented that "this was really easy compared to his hysterectomy, as that was a really painful procedure!"
