IN Podiatrist Presents to Scholl Forensic Society
The Forensics Society at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Sciences recently invited Michael Nirenberg, DPM to speak about forensic podiatry. Dr. Nirenberg (SCPM- class of 1991) presented his lecture on forensic podiatry “The Scientific Principles of Using Gait, Shoes & Footprints to Convict Criminals.” The presentation included forensic podiatry principles, case studies, and a live demonstration of foot printing techniques. It also showcased one of Dr. Nirenberg’s cases which has served as a legal basis for allowing forensic podiatry as expert witness testimony.

Restoring Historic Spokane Home Became WA Podiatrist's Passion
When architect Alfred Jones began building his dream home on Spokane’s South Hill in 1909, little did he know the family’s stay there would be short. He sold his custom-built home in 1911 to a private owner, who then sold it in 1919 to the Catholic Church. It had several owners until 1989, when current owners Dr. Nick Tanner and his wife Karlene bought it. They had already restored a home on West Ninth Avenue, but with Karlene pregnant with their fifth child, they needed a bigger place.
|
Dr. Nick Tanner and his historic restored house |
Nick, a podiatrist, and Karlene, a registered nurse, have done a lot, inspired by what they had seen done with older homes in San Francisco. “We’d work on it at night when the kids were in bed and have pretty much been working on it ever since,” she said. With a classic older home such as this one, the work is never done. Even so, said Karlene, “it’s been a labor of love.”

PODIATRISTS IN HISTORY |
Sign from 1930's Chiropodist Preserved as Historic
It's a good thing Dr. H.C. Dall didn't list the particulars of his work as a "chiropodist" on the glass-plated sign that hung over his shop 84 years ago. If the Saginaw foot doctor who specialized in treating ingrown toenails had enshrined that message on his sign, we might not have much appetite to see it hanging inside the Ippel Building, where diners eat at the Court Street Grill and reporters work at The Saginaw News and MLive.com.

But thanks to the good doctor's use of archaic language, the sign that dates to the 1930s is a welcome addition to the building's Old Saginaw City Historic Sign Park. Since 2006, historian Tom Mudd and the Saginaw Valley Historic Preservation Society have grown the sign park from a single, historic neon sign to a collection of 15 old signs of various hues, sizes, and shapes.

Medical Societies to CMS: Not Ready for Stage 3 Meaningful Use
Dozens of medical societies pressed the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to temporarily halt implementation of the final stage of Meaningful Use, a program that rewards and penalizes clinicians based on how effectively they use electronic medical records.
Forty-two physician organizations, including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American Academy of Pediatrics, petitioned Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Burwell and Office of Management and Budget Director Shaun Donovan to delay proposed Stage 3 provisions of the program.

Google Is Taking on Diabetes
Google intends to develop technologies that will help patients better track and manage the information they need to better control their blood glucose levels. The result could be improved outcomes for patients, which results in fewer adverse events such as hypoglycemia, which can be both debilitating and costly.
One such Google Life Sciences project is a contact lens that can painlessly measure glucose levels from tears. It is currently being developed with Sanofi, the France-based pharmaceutical conglomerate. Google has also secured partnerships with Novartis and Dexcom. The unit is also working with other companies for different disease states. For example, Biogen is collaborating with Google Life Sciences for development of novel multiple sclerosis treatments.

Eleven Things to Never Say to Patients - Part 5
"I'm sure it's nothing serious."
Even when a patient's symptoms seem minor or insignificant from a medical perspective, they could be extremely troubling to the patient.
|
Dr. Suzanne Fuchs |
So when a physician dismisses the symptoms or condition as inconsequential, usually a patient feels disrespected. While unintentional, the physician has missed a tremendous opportunity to show empathy and deepen provider-patient relations. - Dr. Suzanne C. Fuchs, podiatric foot and ankle surgeon at Prohealth Care in New York

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: David Cauthon, DPM
I am using Regranex in my new practice. I certainly do not use it on every diabetic foot ulcer, but after a short period of debridement, off-loading, infection management (if needed), and vascular management (if needed), a lot of these patients still need additional healing potential. The increase in malignancy incidence is concerning - 1% with placebo, 3% with Regranex, but we have to remember that these are patients that already have a 5-year mortality rate of 50%, and I tell patients this from the beginning. No patient yet has gotten a second tube from me and I plan to shift to other modalities before using a third tube.

RE: Outrageous Shoe of the Day
|
Inspired by anatomy class? |
These shoes are inspired by the combination of muscles and bones. "I always used to wonder how the bones in our body are connected together. The shoes are made of two pieces, the red elastic band connects them like a ligament does between different bones," says shoe designer Jintae Eom.
