NY Podiatrist Recommends Foot Exercises at Your Desk

It's a love-hate relationship - women and heels. We all know it feels great to put on a spindly stiletto or a towering platform. But it comes with a plethora of issues. From burning feet and damaged nails to twisted ankles and back pain, most of us simply accept the bitter side-effects. However, Dr. Suzanne Levine claims there are things we can do to avoid the pitfalls without sacrificing what we want to wear - but it isn't easy.

Dr. Suzanne Levine

Dr. Levine recommends a number of foot exercises to strengthen your leg muscles. First, write the alphabet with your foot while you're sat at your desk. Second - her personal favorite - practice pushing an imaginary gas pedal. "You need to strengthen those small muscles that don't get exercised during the day, and stretch the heel cord."

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
NJ Podiatrist Banned from Prescribing Painkillers

A Morris County podiatrist has been suspended from practicing for three years and been banned permanently from prescribing controlled dangerous substances for repeatedly treating patients for ailments unrelated to podiatry and for writing prescriptions for painkillers without medical justification, authorities said. Darius Jasinski, who has a practice in Pequannock, must wait at least 18 months before he can apply to the state Board of Medical Examiners for the re-instatement of his medical license, the state Division of Consumer Affairs said in a news release. He has also agreed to a complete and permanent ban of his controlled dangerous substance and human growth hormone/anabolic steroid prescribing privileges.

HEALTHCARE NEWS
Medical Devices are Finally Marked with Unique IDs, but Usability Not Here Yet

Nine years ago, Congress passed legislation calling for a unique device identifier system. The program the FDA devised to carry out the law requires manufacturers and, in some cases, distributors to label each medical device or its packaging with a unique number that could be read by humans and machines; for the latter, it would typically be a barcode. By inputting that code or scanning the barcode, providers should be able to get data about the product from the FDA's Global UDI Database, such as its serial number, lot number, and its manufacture and expiration dates.

In the three years since the FDA published the final regulations, most manufacturers and distributors have successfully started phasing in UDIs for their products. But few healthcare providers are able to take full advantage of the data. Intermountain has long been recognized as an IT innovator, and in the case of UDIs, it is way ahead of the curve. That's largely because many EHRs still can't record UDIs, even though developers will soon be required to offer products that can if they want their EHRs to remain certified under the federal incentive program. And, at this point, providers aren't required to figure out a way to use the identifiers in patient records.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS
Bret Ribotsky: Who determines what the “standard of care” is?

Dr. Jay Grife

Jay Grife: The “standard of care” can have several definitions depending upon location of the case. Different states have different laws. Most states have a reasonable person standard of care. What does a reasonable person do in a similar situation? Who’s that reasonable person? That’s the gray area in the law.  Be careful what you advertise, as if you say you’re an expert in wound-care, diabetes, kids, you will be held to a level above a "reasonable" podiatrist.

Drs. Lee Rogers and Matthew Regulski

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday night at 9 PM (EST). This week's guests are wound care experts Drs. Lee Rogers and Matthew Regulski. You can register for future events by clicking here

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Four Ways Doctors Can Take Advantage of Long Weekends- Part 3

Approached correctly, long weekends can be a time for enjoyable leisure, rest, and relaxation. Approached like a typical weekend, they might offer no significant benefit. How can we optimize these calendar gifts and still maintain our equanimity? Here are several ways to do so:

3) Be totally invested in your activities and in your relationships during those long weekends. If you're with family and friends, be with them. If you're traveling, or simply working around the yard, be where you are (not thinking about the practice).

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: Board Recertification
From: Name Withheld

I first became board certified by ABPS in 1987. I was recertified in 1997 and 2007 (now ABFAS). I subsequently applied for membership in ACFAS. I'm certainly proud of my membership in both organizations.

I got a notice that moving forward, I would have to take an exam which gives me another 10 years of "board certification". I am in a situation where I hope to practice 1-2 more years, slow down, and/or retire. I'm not sure yet. I don't like the idea of studying and sitting for an exam, paying $675 to take the exam, etc. I did not read that there is any special dispensation for seniors or members like myself, who have 30 years’ experience and have trained more than one ACFAS and ABFAS president. I'd like to hear some PM News readers weigh in on this topic.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (COBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Sy Kessler, DPM

After finishing an open surgical residency eight years before, I had no interest in learning minimal incision surgery techniques because of my pre-conceived notion of what MIS was. As luck would have it, I had hired a former assistant of Dr. Kessler's who had relocated to the Washington, D.C. area and had tried to talk me into visiting him for over a year.  After reluctantly agreeing to visit him, those two days (I even remember the date, August 7th and 8th, 1980) changed my life and changed the life of the tens of thousands of patients I have operated on since then.

I have been in practice for 45 years now and thanks to Dr. Kessler, I enjoy practice more and more each and every day, especially with our recent influx of young residency-trained doctors into the Academy who are now performing MIS. What a great, though often misunderstood, man and what a great innovator. He will be sorely missed.
