MD Podiatrist Presents ICD-10 Seminar to MPMA

Last week, Dr. David Freedman (Foot and Ankle Specialists of the Mid-Atlantic's Silver Spring Division) presented a ICD-10 seminar to a packed house of the Maryland Podiatric Medical Association (MPMA). Participants were very anxious prior to the meeting, but after spending the day going over the vast majority of ICD-10 issues in podiatry, the audience was satisfied having attended this very informative session.

Dr. David Freedman

Dr. Freedman is Vice-President of Foot and Ankle Specialists of the Mid-Atlantic. Accompanying him at the meeting were two board members of the Foot and Ankle Specialists of the Mid-Atlantic: Dr. Enzo Leone  and Dr. Gina Saffo.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Bunion Surgery Much Easier if Done Early: NY Podiatrist

“Most people think that bunion surgery just involves taking a hammer and chisel and knocking off the bump,” says Manhattan podiatrist Dr. John Mancuso. “That’s only part of it.” Fixing the underlying cause means narrowing the forefoot where the bones have spread apart. A podiatric surgeon will cut the bone so that they can literally realign the joint and bring the bones closer together.
Dr. John Mancuso

And people are beginning to consider surgery younger and younger, say experts. Mancuso says the bulk of his patients are in their mid-thirties to early forties. “The younger you do it, the less surgery is necessary,” says Mancuso, who explains that the procedure is much easier if it’s performed before the foot has done serious spreading.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
MN Podiatrist Discusses Barefoot Running

A growing number of runners are ditching their shoes to hit the trails barefoot or in minimalist shoes — even though the benefits haven’t been proven. This trend, which was popularized by journalist Chistopher McDougall in his best-selling book Born to Run, is inspiring more and more runners to return to the roots of the sport and go barefoot.

Dr. Paul Langer

“Many runners were inspired by the story of the Tarahumara Indians and their feats of endurance,” says Paul Langer, DPM, the footwear committee chair of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine and a barefoot runner himself. “In addition, the author described his and others’ transition to barefoot running as a means to resolve previous running-related injuries.” The jury is still out on whether barefoot running benefits are real, and there are plenty of people in both camps.

Got a Beef With Your EHR? Tell the Feds

Are you a provider unhappy with your electronic health records system, or unable to share health data because of the actions of other organizations? Or, are you a healthcare consumer who can’t access your EHRs? The feds want to hear from you.

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has a new online complaint website, healthit.gov/healthitcomplaints. It is the first formal complaint process that ONC has had throughout the journey to EHR meaningful use.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY
Eleven Things to Never Say to Patients - Part 3

3. "Why didn't you come to see me sooner?"

Patients are busier than ever and so are physicians. There can be a significant time lag between the first signs and symptoms and actual treatment.

When a physician questions the patient about this delay in treatment, the patient may interpret this as blame. Going forward, the physician should encourage patients to call the office, so that treatment options can at least be reviewed over the phone. Recognizing patients' barriers to treatment and providing treatment information over the phone or through the patient portal may prove more effective. - Barbara B. Tobias

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
Query: Selective Public Aid Participation?

Our practice is comfortable servicing some nursing homes residents who have public aid as their primary insurance. However, our private practice is being inundated with public aid patients that are (financially) killing us. Does anyone know if we might selectively see public aid patients in nursing homes, but choose not to treat them in our office, or at least limit their access to some extent to our office?

Gary Hoberman, DPM, Chicago, IL

Editor's Comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. In general, podiatrists are not required to accept Medicaid patients. In fact, in many states podiatrists are prohibited from participation in the Medicaid program, except under extraordinary circumstances. Since the laws vary in each state, you should consult your Medicaid agency, a healthcare lawyer, or your state podiatry association .

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP - PART 1
RE: Elderly Patient Visit
From: Doug Milch, DPM

I saw an 80 year old female patient who had right foot pain. After examining her, I explained to her why her foot was hurting her. After my thorough explanation, she said, "But why?" So, I re- explained why her foot was painful using smaller words, and she again said, "But why?" So,finally I gave up and said, "It's because of your age." She then said, "well my other foot is the same age and it doesn't hurt." You can't argue with that logic!
