PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
CA Uses New Synthetic Cartilage Implant
Podiatrist Dr. Bob Baravarian, with the University Foot and Ankle Institute, said toe arthritis can be caused by an injury or improper foot mechanics. There are a few ways to treat it, but traditional treatments involve replacing worn out cartilage with a metal implant or fusing bones together. Both procedures can lead to months of down time.
|
Dr. Bob Baravarian |
Baravarian uses a new option: a synthetic cartilage implant. He said the implant is very similar to cartilage in density and stiffness. "We make a small drill hole in the bone, and then the implant is fitted into the bone," said Baravarian. In FDA clinical trials, researchers report an 80 percent success rate. Experts believe the implant can last up to 20 years, and after that, doctors can replace it.

PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS |
Democratic Leaders Support Write-in Against OH Podiatrist in House Race
Some Democratic leaders are shunning their party's nominee by supporting a write-in candidate in southern Ohio's U.S. House race. Truck driver William Smith has won the 2nd District Democratic nomination twice in the last three primaries. But Smith, who lives with his mother in Pike County, does virtually no campaigning, frustrating party officials in the district. That's why Hamilton County Democratic Party Chairman Tim Burke and party officials in Clermont and Brown counties are endorsing write-in candidate Janet Everhard, a retired gynecologist and surgeon.

Dr. Brad Wenstrup |
Dr. Brad Wenstrup, an Iraq War veteran and podiatrist, got 59 percent against Smith in the general election and won re-election in 2014 by getting two-thirds of the general election vote. Wenstrup campaign consultant Mark Weaver said Wenstrup isn't focused on what the Democrats are doing. "He's confident that his strong conservative record of leadership speaks for itself and that voters will agree," Weaver said.

CA Podiatrist Introduces “Fashion With Function” Footwear Collection
Inspired by Victoria Beckham's recent announcement that she can no longer wear her signature sky-high heels, California and New York-based podiatric surgeon Dr. Joan Oloff has decided it's time to start a true footwear movement for women, where the long held belief in "fashion over function" is replaced by a newfound belief in "fashion with function", and it has been a long time coming.

With her AW16 collection, Dr. Oloff will be launching the final iteration of her patent pending technology along with a custom designed heel that will provide the illusion of delicacy, while offering a strong, stable foundation for the body.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY AND TE LAW |
Aussie Fraudster Gets Jail Time for Fake Podiatry Business
Million-dollar fraudster Andrew Christopher Hurst was able to fool tax officials with fake documents when a $40,000 claim raised their suspicions, a court has heard. The 42-year-old Sunshine Coast dad shed a tear in Maroochydore District Court on Friday as Judge Gary Long jailed him for his six-year, $1,585,413.11 tax fraud.
A podiatry business he claimed to be running from north Brisbane and Pelican Waters was exposed as a fake when he owned up to Australian Taxation Office investigators in 2014. Hurst had used his knowledge as a former Australian Taxation Office customer service officer and as a Child Support Agency financial investigator to devise a scheme by which he set up the fake podiatry business in 2006 and began submitting false business activity statements in 2008.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Four Ways Doctors Can Take Advantage of Long Weekends- Part 2
Approached correctly, long weekends can be a time for enjoyable leisure, rest, and relaxation. Approached like a typical weekend, they might offer no significant benefit. How can we optimize these calendar gifts and still maintain our equanimity? Here are several ways to do so:
2) Avoid the temptation at home to "look up" things online, to mull over patient cases, or to otherwise be engaged in office activities even if you haven't physically taken home a briefcase or patient files.

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Amputation with I&D
I performed a procedure which included an I&D of plantar space infection and partial first ray resection. My thought is to use code CPT 28003 for the incision and drainage. Would the amputation of the toe and metatarsal head be included, or is it billable separately (CPT 28810)? The Incision was carried to encompass the partial ray resection and the I&D.
R. Kurt Meier, III, DPM, Brick, NJ
Response: CPT 28003 is appropriate for an I&D that is done below the level of fascia in multiple areas. The description of CPT 28810 reads, "amputation, metatarsal, with toe, single”. If you did not amputate the entire metatarsal, I do not think 28110 is appropriate. For a partial first ray amputation (hallux and part of the 1st metatarsal), I suggest both CPT 28820 (amputation, toe; metatarsophalangeal joint) and CPT 28122 (partial excision [craterization, saucerization, sequestrectomy, or diaphysectomy] bone [e.g., osteomyelitis or bossing]; tarsal or metatarsal bone, except talus or calcaneus) with a "-59" modifier on CPT 28122.
Now the question is whether you should code both the I&D and the partial first ray resection. If the incision portion of your I&D was actually part of the incision to do the partial first ray amputation, my opinion is that the I&D was a component of the amputation and should not be separately billed. Conversely, if the I&D was its own distinct procedure or independent from the amputation, then it can be separately billed. In this situation, your documentation should indicate that the the I&D was a different procedure or surgery, different site, or a separate incision from the amputation.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
RE: The Passing of Sy Kessler, DPM
It is with great sadness that I announce that Seymour Kessler, DPM has passed away in Chicago. Sy has long been considered a pioneer of minimally invasive foot surgical techniques in the '70s. Along with a small group of colleagues, he founded what is known today as the Academy of Ambulatory Foot and Ankle Surgery (AAFAS). He had 2 successful podiatry practices in Chicago and was the first medical practice listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
|
Dr. Sy Kessler |
He was a major partner of the Chicago White Sox, president of 4 chartered banks, and owned many medical buildings throughout the United States. He always invited doctors from around the globe to visit his office and share his unique techniques. I had the distinct privilege of being his associate for almost 3 years and was treated as a son. He taught me two important things that I didn't learn in school: how to run a successful practice, and more importantly, be respectful of your patients and provide them with the best outcomes possible. He leaves behind his lovely wife June, sons Marty and Ron, as well as his daughter Jori.
Hartley Miltchin, DPM, Toronto, Canada
