TN Podiatrist Discusses Bone Spurs
“A bone spur on its own does not cause pain,” said R. Brent Harbin, DPM, a podiatrist with Tennova Foot and Ankle. “However, depending on the size and location of the spur, it can interact with nearby structures like tendons, nerves, or other bones, which can result in acute pain and loss of motion.”

According to Dr. Harbin, joint damage from osteoarthritis is one of the most common causes of bone spurs. “As arthritis breaks down the cartilage cushioning the edges of your bones, your body attempts to repair the loss by growing bone spurs in the damaged area. Other potential causes and risk factors include overuse of a joint, obesity, genetic bone problems, conditions like gout or lupus, and spinal stenosis,” he said.

GA Podiatrist Discusses How to Avoid Getting Calluses
According to Ramona Brooks, DPM, a podiatrist and spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association, there are a range of precautions you can take to avoid developing calluses. First make sure you have an adequate fitting shoe, advises Brooks. “You don’t want a shoe that’s too large where the foot is moving around,” she said. “That causes areas of friction and rubbing and that’s how you end up developing a blister that later can develop into a callus.”

Dr. Brooks also recommends avoiding pointy-toe shoes in favor or styles with a roomier rounded or squared toe box, lessening the chances of feet rubbing against the interior of the toe area. Moisturizing your feet is another way to help prevent the thickening of roughened skin, according to Brooks, coupled with regular exfoliation with a pumice stone or file. Thickening of the skin is the body’s way to protect itself from friction at pressure points.

NY Podiatrist Recommends 2-Pronged Approach to Treat Athletes Foot
So called because it often affects those who wear sweaty, smelly shoes for long hours, athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that develops on the skin between toes (and looks and feels itchy and even slimy). While it isn’t difficult to treat, it definitely isn’t pleasant.
And because athlete’s foot is often linked to toenail fungus — podiatrist Paul I. Belitz, DPM explains that bacteria, fungus, and viral pathogens from one part of the foot can easily contaminate and re-infect another area if left untreated — it’s helpful to use a two-pronged approach that will treat toe fungus, as well. He says that anyone who isn’t willing to see a specialist should at least try something like Gold Mountain Beauty’s Total Foot Care line — which sells a fungal nail eliminator — especially if you’re diabetic and more prone to serious foot problems.

FL Podiatrist Charged with Sexual Battery on a Child
A Bay County doctor is facing charges after deputies say he sexually battered a child. Bay County Sheriff's Deputies say they responded to a local hospital Sunday night about a child who claimed she had been sexually assaulted. The child told investigators Dr. Daniel Feitz sexually molested her and exposed himself while at her home. Dr. Feitz is a local podiatrist in Panama City. Deputies say they made contact with Feitz, 56, of Southport, and he declined to speak.

Get Your Website to the Top of Google Rankings — and Stay There - Part 4
Here are two initial ways to boost your search results:

Make sure Google indexes your healthcare website. You can check this by typing your website, www.yourdomain.com, into the Google search box. If you see your website’s pages, this means Google has indexed your website and will continue to crawl it for updates. However, if your practice’s website does not appear in search results, you must get it indexed.

Google only displays websites that are relevant to the keywords being searched, so your website content must be related to relevant keywords. For example, a physician’s practice in Phoenix could include what services are offered (e.g., pediatrics, primary care, family medicine), location (e.g., the neighborhood, suburb, zip code), and what insurance providers are accepted. These should be included in text throughout the website as well as alternate text for pictures and meta content in your website’s HTML coding.

Dr. Werter brought up that some insurers will just not pay podiatrists for CPT code 76942. I was under the impression that if anyone is paid for 76942 or any code for that matter, then podiatry can’t and should not be excluded. Why podiatry as a profession continues to sit back and allow people to walk over us like a door mat is beyond my comprehension.
Last week, I sent James Christina, DPM and executive director of APMA an email complaining of this very point and code. I noted that medical doctors are allowed to bill this code to Workers Comp, but podiatrists can’t. He informed me he wasn’t aware of it, but would look into it.
If colleagues notice podiatry being singled out - you really should speak up. This is one time silence is not golden.

In regard to Dr. Block’s recent editorial “Podiatry’s Continuing Identity Crisis”, he and I, and a large group of our peers, have discussed the issue of the podiatrist’s identity, our self-image, and resulting issues with our collective self-esteem for years. We have always agreed, and to this day continue to agree that while we all do surgery, and deserve recognition for the training that we get, the credentials we achieve, and the fine work that we do in that discipline, very few podiatrists are primarily surgeons, nor should most podiatrists primarily be surgeons. If we all were primarily surgeons, who would do ALL THE REST of the important work that we do in solving the world's foot health issues?
The volume of medical podiatry, the work we do as physicians, not as surgeons, far exceeds the volume of surgery needed by the...

Dr. Jon A. Hultman’s article, Student Recruitment - The Future of Podiatry Is in Your Hands, clearly addresses the fact that podiatry faces a student “recruitment crisis” that “could signal the beginning of the end for the profession.” Despite a period of remarkable progress for podiatry, our schools are now encountering a host of student recruitment challenges from the increasing numbers of new American medical school seats (3,000 new seats since 2012), off-shore medical schools, physician assistant programs, nurse practitioner programs, and the new interest in American medical schools offering tuition free programs such as New York University now provides. These challenges are real and the trajectory is detrimental to the viability of our schools.
Dr. Hultman’s article should be required reading for the trustees of our nation’s podiatric ...
