PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Falls are Major Reason Why Seniors Lose Independence:  FL Podiatrist

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports alarming statistics about Americans’ golden years: falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries among older people. In 2010, for example, 2.3 million fall injuries sent older folks to emergency rooms, and a whopping 662,000 of those patients required hospitalization. The monetary impact is almost as frightening; falls in 2010 cost $30 billion in direct medical costs, the CDC says.

Dr. Earl Horowitz

“Falling is a risk for everyone, but the risk goes up as we age, and the result is that falls can be—and in fact usually are—very serious. Falls are one of the most common reasons why older people lose their independence,” said Earl R. Horowitz, DPM, President and Diplomate of the ABMSP. “The work that ABMSP podiatrists are doing in the field of fall prevention is quite remarkable,” he continued. “These podiatrists are at the leading edge of exciting treatments that will have real impact in improving quality of life and independence by preventing falls in the elderly.”

PODIATRISTS OVERCOMING ADVERSITY
NY Podiatrist's Non-Profit to Hold Another Dance Fundraiser for Parkinson's

Before being diagnosed with young onset Parkinson’s disease (PD) at just 36 years old in 2007, Dr. Beth Hochstein lived in Great Neck with her family and ran a podiatry practice in town with her husband Dr. Alec Hochstein. She has since devoted herself to managing life with this disease—in part, by dancing. After learning about the many physical and mental benefits dance could offer people with PD, Hochstein was inspired and began fundraising for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research by creating her first event in May 2011, Dance Party for Parkinson’s.

Dr. Beth Hochstein

After three successful dance events that raised approximately $80,000, Hochstein, with the help and support of family and friends, started the non-profit organization Dance Party for Parkinson’s, Inc., that raises money to fund research until a cure for PD is found. On Sept. 18, the group will host a Dance Party for Parkinson’s: Shakin’ It for a Cure at St. John’s University’s D’Angelo Center.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 3
NJ Podiatry Practice Holds 3rd Annual School Supplies Drive

New Jersey Foot and Ankle Center in Oradell successfully held their third annual school supply drive for Bergen County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children. Throughout August, generous patients and staff brought in various school supplies that were collected and donated to children in the Bergen County court system. CASA for Children of Bergen County is a non-profit organization that trains volunteers to advocate for children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect.

Dr. Daniel Margolin

Dr. Daniel Margolin, owner of New Jersey Foot and Ankle Center, is proud to support local foster children in need. “Being a child in today’s world is difficult enough,” said Margolin, “but even more so for the children with no formal support system. It is important to facilitate foster children in their formative years so they have stability and hope for a better life. The volunteers at CASA are actually making this happen.”

HEALTHCARE CARE
HHS Makes it Harder for Clinical Researchers to Avoid Sharing Trial Data

HHS on Friday finalized a rule that expands and clarifies what clinical-trial data legally needs to be made public. The goal is to help scientists, doctors, and patients learn more about ongoing research and potentially ease access to experimental treatments. A 2007 law required certain universities and manufacturers to report their results. But some exemptions and lax enforcement caused few to follow through. A Duke University study in 2015 found that only 13.4% of trials reported summary results within the mandated 12-month time-frame following the end of a trial.

The final rule, which will go into effect Jan. 18, 2017, clarifies that most interventional trials involving drug, biological, and device products need to be registered on ClinicalTrials.gov, and summary results for the studies need to be submitted within a year of a trial's completion. Clinicaltrials.gov is run by the National Institutes of Health. The website offers clinical trial results and information on registered trials. It was established so patients could see whether they were eligible for experimental treatments.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Four Ways Doctors Can Take Advantage of Long Weekends- Part 1

Approached correctly, long weekends can be a time for enjoyable leisure, rest, and relaxation. Approached like a typical weekend, they might offer no significant benefit. How can we optimize these calendar gifts and still maintain our equanimity? Here are several ways to do so:

1) Visit your calendar or scheduling software and peruse the three-day weekends for one year in advance. On the evening before such weekends, mark down that you will be taking nothing home from the office. By making this notation, you increase the probability that you will actually follow through.
