PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1
It's the Ligament, Not the Heel Spur that Hurts: NY Podiatrist

You would think that it’s the heel spur that is hurting, but through years of research, it’s the ligament that’s actually causing the pain and pulling on that heel bone,” said Erik Sims, DPM, of Sims Podiatry in Poughkeepsie. “Even when we do surgery, nowadays, we still don’t take out the heel spur. We know that people can live with heel spurs and they don’t hurt.”

Dr. Erik Sims

When the weather gets warmer, Sims said, it’s normal to want to jump right in to walking, hiking, and spending time outside. “Get into it gradually,” he said. “We see a decent amount of injuries because people who haven’t been running for months suddenly run for miles. When you are active, get a good supporting shoe.”

Communal Yoga Mats Carry Many Risks to Feet: NC Podiatrist

After one too many classes that started with a mat still dripping with sweat from whomever used it last, we couldn't help but wonder what might be living on it. "Fungus is the number one issue when it comes to what you could catch from a yoga mat," says Jane Andersen, DPM, board-certified foot surgeon in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Dr. Jane Andersen

The virus that leads to warts also thrives in moist, sweaty places, says Andersen. Even if you're doing floor work during class and your torso or thigh comes in contact with a virus on your mat, you're unlikely to start sprouting warts there. "Warts are usually specific to the bottom of the foot," says Andersen, and the same goes for fungus -- precisely because those areas provide an environment where bacteria can thrive.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY
Eleven Things to Never Say to Patients - Part 1

When patients present for care, it's common for emotions to run high. And given the incredibly vulnerable position these encounters often place patients in, it's not surprising for fear, worry, and apprehension to take center stage. Carefully selected wording on the part of physicians can help to calm these situations and prevent further patient discomfort. Here are 11 phrases best avoided during possibly delicate and intense physician-patient interactions.

1. "I Don't Know"

A patient may interpret this to mean that the physician lacks the necessary skills to properly care for him. In actuality, the physician may be expressing that the answer to the patient's health concerns is not yet known by medical science, and by proxy, the physician.

ICD-10 UPDATE
Will ICD-10 Conversion be Worth the Trouble?

The required Oct. 1 conversion to the ICD-10 coding system will be worth the costs and headaches, supporters say. With up to seven alphanumeric characters in ICD-10 compared with a maximum of four numeric digits in ICD-9, there will be lots more room for the codes to accommodate new medical conditions and procedures. With ICD-9, “we've just run out of space,” said Lynne Thomas Gordon, president of the American Health Information Management Association.

Advocates also say ICD-10 will allow providers to keep better track of patient care and aggregate data to perform quality-improvement analysis. It also should give hospital and physician leaders sharper tools for analyzing the impact of new procedures and managing population health. They'll be better able to track individual practices and identify inappropriate practice variation.

In today’s healthcare environment, you need to eliminate as many headaches as you can. I suggest you check out Sammy Software. I have no financial interest with them. I just sleep much better knowing that Ken Katz and his team know what’s going on. No program is perfect, but with a team taking care of some of the largest PIAs in our profession (me included), I know this would be a good choice for you to consider.
