PODIATRISTS AND ECONOMICS |
Podiatrists on List of Top Jobs Paying Around $100K in Louisville Area
If you want to make $100,000 a year or something close to it in the Louisville area, you may want to consider going into finance or healthcare. KentuckianaWorks rolled out a career calculator on its website on Friday. It takes data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Burning Glass online job postings, the Kentucky Center for Education and Workforce Statistics, and other sources. The calculator lets users search the database by income, occupation, and college major to get a glimpse of the area's workforce.
We decided to look at Louisville-area jobs that pay in the $100,000 ballpark. The calculator, which ranks the occupations by the number of jobs in the Louisville area, found that most of them were related to financial fields, such as financial managers. Healthcare jobs also were on the list, as physician assistants ($94,360), optometrists ($103,550) and podiatrists ($98,110) all made the cut.

RELEVANT RESEARCH |
Prevention Programs Significantly Reduce Ankle Injuries in Soccer Athletes
Prevention programs are effective at reducing the risk of ankle injuries by 40 percent in soccer players, according to a new study appearing in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS). Injuries to the lower extremities are the most common in soccer. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), more than 227,700 people were treated for soccer–related injuries in 2015, including more than 36,300 with ankle injuries. Several prevention programs have been developed to address this concern.
In a new analysis, researchers reviewed the data from 10 randomized controlled studies on ankle injury prevention programs, involving 4,121 female and male soccer players. The studies included neuromuscular, proprioceptive (balance), strengthening, and stretching exercises to prevent ankle injuries. They did not include bracing, taping, or other external supports.

HEALTHCARE NEWS |
Survey Finds Many People Lack NSAID Knowledge
About half of the responders to a small online survey said they didn't know what an NSAID was, nor did they know why they are used. Overall, 47% of survey respondents, as well as 40% of those who said they had taken pain medication in the last 12 months, said that said they did not know what NSAIDs were, reported Bill McCarberg, MD, of University of California at San Diego, and colleagues in a poster presentation at Pain Week.
In addition, more than a quarter said that they were not aware of the FDA recommendations regarding NSAID use (the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration). The authors wrote that the survey results were particularly interesting in light of the FDA's recent strengthened warning about the increased risk of cardiovascular thrombotic events associated with NSAID use.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
7 Reasons Why Physicians Work Locum Tenens - Part 7
Most physicians have heard of locum tenens and many have worked alongside locums doctors in a hospital or clinic. However, the majority of doctors are unaware of the benefits of locums or even how these temporary assignments really work.
The reasons physicians do locums vary but here are seven primary motives for working locum tenens:
7. Freedom to pursue other passions —If medicine is just one aspect of your life, locums assignments provide you the time to pursue other hobbies. We work with locums who use their free time to travel the world, or write books, or visit their grandkids. Locums lets you choose when you work and when you play.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
RE: My Brother Primus, Metatarsus the First
From: Vincent Gramuglia, DPM
I asked my residents to tell me which bone in the foot was the most evil? Here is the response from Christopher Chung, DPM:
I have seen evil, and it is none other than my own brother, Primus, Metatarsus the first. Being the second child of the metatarsal family hasn’t been easy for me or for my younger brothers. Though the other metatarsus brothers and I share a great ligamentous connection, my older brother refuses to share one with me. I do what I can to stay connected to him through his proximal neighbor, but my brother and I do not share such a Lisfranc’s attachment. He is very arrogant and stands proudly on the shoulders of my sesamoid siblings with disregard for their well-being.
He is also reckless and needs to be restrained by my friend Peroneus Longus, who travels from the far away land of L.E.G.. Peroneus is the one who often keeps my brother grounded, but when left unattended, my brother takes off and elevates into the air, leaving me to bear the weight of his troubles. I even recall a time when my brother, Primus, received a glistening crown of gouty crystals. Once the crystals were on his head, his angry nature only grew ten-fold and manifested as a glowing red radiance. We stand apart now, him in his new home of Bunion and I in his old throne accepting his old responsibilities. To me, he is evil and no longer the brother I was born with.
Vincent Gramuglia, DPM, Bronx, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 |
From: Philbert Kuo, DPM
In a follow-up to my previous post, I whole-heartedly agree that one should do his/her homework on the different carriers. It does not hurt to ask your carrier for a better quote. I did, and they knocked down the price by $2,000. Of course, they were $5,000 above everyone else, but I think you get the picture. As far as disclosures, I have never been paid by any insurance company or insurance broker for any services.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP |
RE: Outrageous Shoe of the Day
Veterinarians at the Smithsonian's National Zoo have turned to an unconventional therapy for an arthritic 41-year-old Asian elephant — shoes. Huge black boots designed by Teva for Shanthi's front feet, to be exact. They are "about a size 20, with an EEEEEEEEEEEE width," as The Washington Post reports, adding that "a single boot resembled a rubberized birdbath."
|
Treatment for elephantiasis? |
The boots help zookeepers keep badly needed medication "on the pads of her feet while preventing debris from entering the lesions for several hours at a time," Tony Barthel, the curator of the elephant exhibit, said in a statement. "They protect her healing feet in much the same way humans wear bandages, and they allow her to move freely throughout the exhibit."
