HEALTHCARE NEWS
Half of Americans Have Diabetes or Pre-diabetes

About half of all Americans have either diabetes or pre-diabetes, according to a new report. And experts in the field say that's good news. That's because the study finds that after two decades of linear growth, the prevalence of diabetes in the United States has finally started to plateau.

In a paper published this week in JAMA, the authors write that their findings are consistent with other studies that show the percentage of people with diagnosed diabetes remained steady from 2008 to 2012.

IN THE COURTS
Judge Rules House Can Sue Obama Administration on Healthcare Spending

A federal judge ruled Wednesday that the House had the right to sue the Obama administration over billions of dollars in healthcare spending, a decision that poses a new legal threat to the healthcare law and gave congressional Republicans a victory in their claims of executive overreach by the White House.

In a significant defeat for the administration, United States District Court Judge Rosemary M. Collyer found that the House had made a compelling case that suing the White House was the only way to preserve its constitutional power to control federal spending and stop the administration from distributing $136 billion in insurance company subsidies that Republicans say Congress never approved.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY

Evaluating Six Electronic Patient Engagement Tools - Part 4

4.  Health Information Exchanges (HIEs)

Pro: HIEs are setting up patient engagement tools, or even patient portals. We could see some good metrics come out of HIEs with patient portals.

Con: [For it to work,] the community needs to really take on the HIE model, and there have to be enough data contributors to really be a powerful tool for physicians and patients to contribute data. Then the HIE can handle the metrics of how that data is tracked for meaningful use, or other programs, or which patients are accessing that data.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Steven Kravitz, DPM

Thanks to James McGuire, DPM who had a well-stated response regarding the "APWH Medicare LCD rebuttal" letter and article that appeared in PM News on Friday, September 11.

The APWH supports the ability for podiatric physicians to perform H&Ps. Additionally, APWH supports the efforts of any member seeking these privileges if they are blocked by any state, hospital, or other agency. The APWH is not alone on its policy. It is consistent with the APMA, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS), The Joint Commission (TJC)  and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

In 2001, The Joint Commission included "qualified" podiatrists to perform medical H&Ps in its manual on hospital accreditation. CMS adjusted its guidelines in 2007 to include podiatrists to perform H&Ps as well.
