REMEMBERING 9/11 |
NY Podiatrists Participate in 911 Calling Of The Names Ceremony
On the Anniversary of the September 11th attacks, volunteers from the 2001-2002 St. Paul’s Chapel World Trade Center Relief Ministry created the first Calling Of The Names Ceremony. Their intention: to honor all deceased 9/11 Rescue and Recovery Workers and Volunteers by having a ceremony similar to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum’s annual ceremony. They felt it meaningful to do so on the anniversary itself, and at St. Paul’s Chapel where many responders found respite.
|
Drs. Arthur Gudeon and Kathy Reilly Fallon |
Drs. Arthur Gudeon, Kathy Reilly Fallon, and Wilma Hunt-Watts served as volunteers at St. Paul’s Chapel following the attacks at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. They rendered foot, ankle, and wound care to the NYPD, NYFD, Iron/Steel workers, recovery workers. They were honored to recite the names at the “4th Annual Calling Of The Names Ceremony” on Wednesday, September 11, 2019. They recited the names of the deceased 9-11 responders at St. Paul's Chapel in NYC.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Improve Your Patient Communications - Part 6
Here are some strategies to help you refocus and enhance your patient interactions:
6. Show empathy - Engaging with a patient means making a connection, first and foremost, as a person who is hearing the issue from someone else’s perspective. Empathy requires listening intently and focusing on the patient to understand their experience, particularly when feelings or emotions are expressed. Empathy provides the patient with validation of their experience and communicates, “I see you, I hear you, I understand you and I accept you.”
Empathy also saves time. It’s estimated that patients provide numerous clues about their concerns during conversations with physicians. When physicians miss those clues, patients tend to repeat themselves until they feel they have received the appropriate response.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: General Solo Practice Overhead
I’m writing to see if there is any current information published discussing average solo podiatry practice overhead that is stratified and broken down into categories such as DME, etc.?
Mark Gerig, DPM, Amarillo, TX
Editor's comment: You can obtain a wealth of information on expenses by reading PM's current Practice Management Survey. While it doesn't break down expenses by type of practice, the overall survey indicates that the overhead in a solo practice will be greater than in a group practice.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
From: William Scherer, DPM, MS
Assuming patient specimen tracking is not part of your EMR system, the most basic, easiest to configure, and least expensive programs for tracking laboratory and biopsy specimens is a spreadsheet such as Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice, Calc, and Apple Numbers.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 |
RE: Welcome to the Future of Podiatry
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM
Who needs a podiatrist when you can just buy a pair of custom orthotics on your own? Soon not one insurance will pay for orthotics, but what does it matter anyway? A new class of DPMs are now entering the profession with the mindset that they are only “foot and ankle” surgeons.
They opine that general podiatry is truly passe’and is beneath the DPM degree. All the time and money invested in their degree that was earned along with the required 3-year surgical residency is far beyond the...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3A |
From: Steven Kravitz, DPM
Dr. Udell’s commentary on the original article from Dr. Levy is right on target. Dr. Allen Jacobs is a major proponent of podiatrists as true physicians, practicing as expert specialists in foot and ankle medicine. In that regard, my commentary and suggestions on the topic are as follows.
Blood pressure measurement should be standard at all, if not most office visits. Informational pamphlets from other medical societies describing different pathology that affects foot and ankle provides information to patients and the ability for the podiatrist to make appropriate referrals. A yearly annual history and physical exam should be taken to update records and follow up on patient standard health. This leads to referral to appropriate colleagues, provides better patient care, decreases patient morbidity, and increases your visibility in the medical community.
All of this reflects good quality practice and the very best method to build a stable practice in your medical community.
Steven Kravitz, DPM, Pfafftown, NC

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3B |
From: Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH
Dr. Udell further emphasizes the potential role of podiatric physicians in primary care . The way that those in the profession practice, and the kind of patients they see not only makes this obvious, but contemporary podiatric medical education produces DPMs who are also educated, trained, and qualified to serve in that role compounded by the rapidly growing shortage of primary care physicians. These are only a few of the factors that make it virtually an obligation for podiatric physicians to be part of the team that can fill this major gap in healthcare.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP |
RE: Outrageous Shoes of the Day
Not only is New York Met Pete Alonso the National League record holder for most home runs by a rookie in a season, but the slugger has also shown tremendous leadership and awareness.
|
NY Mets' tribute to the victims of 9/11 |
Alonso organized an effort for his team to wear custom cleats for their game on 9/11 to commemorate the tragic day. His effort included getting all of his teammates’ cleat sizes. He also paid for them.
