PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Avoid Home Remedies for Onychomycosis: FL Podiatrist

Dr. Aden Huynh

"Toenail fungus can be difficult to diagnose, so using home remedies such as rubbing Vicks VapoRub on the infected toenail twice a day or dipping your toes into a bathtub full of bleach could be treating something that only looks like toenail fungus and is really a different ailment entirely. To treat toenail fungus, the best route to be sure that you are getting the treatment you need would be to see a podiatrist and get diagnosed. After your doctor confirms that it’s toenail fungus, s/he could prescribe either laser nail therapy, oral anti-fungal medication, or even a medicated nail polish to treat the infection." says Dr. Aden Huynh.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
OH Podiatrist Joins Foot & Ankle Wellness Center

Dr. Gene S. Graham has joined the practice at the Foot & Ankle Wellness Center. Graham has three decades of experience in central Ohio, including the past three years at a multi-discipline group practice, according to the center. A graduate of The Ohio State University, Graham completed his residency at OSU Hospitals East after receiving his doctor of podiatric medicine degree and surgical training at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine.

He has been a consultant for several area teams and events, including the Columbus Marathon and Otterbein University. “I had three broken ankles from basketball and running, so I’ve been in those shoes,” Graham said.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY
Evaluating Six Electronic Patient Engagement Tools - Part 3

3.  The Direct Protocol (secure health e-mail)

Pro: This is another great tool physicians can take advantage of to share information with patients in a secure way without having to rely on the patient portal. For patients with chronic or co-morbid conditions, it would behoove them to set up a personal health record (PHR) and ask their physician to use Direct Protocol to send clinical summaries, lab reports, and other key data.

Con: PHRs have been around for a while, but we've seen PHR adoption rates get to 10 percent. So how much are patients really demanding this? Some patients are glad and willing to do it and you may have a patient demographic that expects it, but certainly, not all of them do.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
From: Steven J. Kaniadakis, DPM

I think the context of Dr. Werter's post is directed towards an answering service, rather than a "call center." This is an excellent plan. It was one of the secrets to my practice success. I had a very detailed "telephone protocol" outline for the people answering the phone calls.

Design an algorithm to address virtually all concerns people typically ask from your practice experience. For example, "if they ask this, then say that. If they say 'yes', then say...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Paul A Caputo, DPM

I have used FirstClass Medical Billing located in Nutley, NJ for years and have been very satisfied with their services. This is my third company, and by far the best. Cathy (the owner) is thorough, aggressive, and follows through with all claims...and she's Sicilian, so billing companies don't mess with her!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OFFICE ISSUES) - PART 1A
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

One advantage of using an online service such as Craigslist to hire receptionists is that anyone responding to a computer ad, ipso facto, has basic computer skills. You don't want to hire a person who is terrified to turn on a computer. We have experienced this problem in the past.

A new  problem we are encountering in the younger college age group of applicants is a lack of ability to spell. Some of these people cannot file or even pull files because they cannot figure out that "L" follows "K" in the English alphabet. Yet these applicants are either college students or graduates. How they achieved such a high academic level can only be as a result of our society where computers are relied upon to do all basic math and spell checking. It is sad.

Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OFFICE ISSUES) - PART 1B
From: Lloyd Nesbitt DPM

Try frequenting a couple of local Starbucks. I like the idea of their staff being trained to work under pressure, but more importantly, you can see how they deal with the public. Over the years, I was happy to hire a couple of very positive and outgoing part-time employees from Starbucks who were able and anxious to put in more hours. They turned out to be among my better staff members.

I gave up years ago on going through resumes and interviewing people. I did approach one of the medical receptionist schools, and had my staff interview their applicants. I would say hello and chat for two minutes and know whether or not their personality was suitable. In my opinion, it comes down to their personality, positive spirit, and polished ways of dealing with the public. You can train the rest.

Lloyd Nesbitt, DPM, Toronto, Canada

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1A
From: Todd Rotwein, DPM

In response to Dr. Edelman's characterization of the fact that 20 percent of our GDP goes to medical care as a "big problem": In an aging society addicted to alcohol, gambling, fast (unhealthy)  food, video games, and professional sports, by what reckoning is 20 percent too much? To my mind, it's a bargain.

Todd Rotwein, DPM, Hempstead, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1B
From: Michael M. Rosenblatt, DPM

I think we have to split Dr. Kornfeld's most recent letter about "direct patient pay" into separate arguments: He is a well known free-market practitioner who eschews any and all insurance and goes directly to patients to pay. He writes frequently on this subject and contends that neither Government nor private insurers have any right to control your charges for services or professional products.

Government and private insurers have a direct interest in controlling costs of healthcare. Government's interest is reducing the total cost of business in order to make more profits for executives and shareholders. Unlike his substitute-payer adversaries, he doesn't care about...

RE: Outrageous Shoe of the Day

Good if you have a "running toes"?

The Tisshoes were made for an art/fashion exhibition in Tokyo 2007. It's a pair of shoes shaped liked a tissue box. "The inspiration came from my childhood memory of when I loved wearing emptied tissue boxes as a pair of shoes," says Masashi Kawamura.
