ROCKY MOUNTAIN ORTHOTICS LAB JOINS AETREX iSTEP EVOLUTION RX PROGRAM

Aetrex Worldwide, Inc. is pleased to announce that Rocky Mountain Orthotics Lab, Inc., (RMOL) one of the largest and most technologically advanced custom orthotics labs in the nation, has joined Aetrex’s iStep Evolution-Rx Program as a participating manufacturer of custom orthotics. Aetrex’s iStep technology works by capturing each individual’s foot size, foot type and pressure points. The program then creates a three-dimensional view of the foot which is sent electronically to RMOL, who then manufacture the individually customized and comfortably fitted orthotics - without the need for messy and bulky plaster casts. The iStep will also recommend the ideal footwear and off-the-shelf orthotic solutions which can then be immediately ordered from the Evolution kiosk. Doctors can enroll in the Evolution program by contacting Aetrex at 800-526-2739 or Rocky Mountain Orthotics Lab, Inc. at 800-968-7665.

Proper Shoes and Socks Can Prevent Many Ailments CA Podiatrist

In two decades of practice as a Lodi podiatrist, Kevin Stroh has seen it all - corns and bunions, athlete's foot and nail fungus. Many foot ailments can be prevented, he said, by proper shoe and sock selection along with some simple hygiene tips.

There's no shortage of products designed to keep your feet dry, but applying regular antiperspirant to them is a good way to prevent too much sweat, Stroh said. Other methods include powdering the foot or applying sprays inside the shoe.

Before you slip back into your fall shoes, consider your wardrobe and throw out anything that seems too worn to provide adequate support. "The shoe has to be comfortable when you buy it," Stroh said. "Don't think you're going to break it in and make it comfortable."

AT THE COLLEGES

Levy Speaks on Bioterrorism on 9/11

On September 11th, Dr. Leonard Levy, director of the Center for Bioterrorism and All-Hazards Preparedness at Nova Southeastern University, spoke on bioterrorism and all-hazards preparedness as part of a series of mini-seminars hosted by the Office of Continuing Medical Education at Barry University’s School of Podiatric Medicine.

Dr. Leonard Levy

Dr. Levy said that although podiatric medicine was often overlooked in discussions of bioterrorism and preparedness, its wide diagnostic scope made it one of the most relevant disciplines in terms of responding quickly and thoroughly to a terrorist attack or natural disaster. The seminar was the first in a series of three-credit mini-seminars scheduled throughout the fall on Barry’s Miami Shores campus.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)

RE: Low Insurance Payments
From: Mark Levine, DPM

Why do we take these plans? After fighting with HIP insurance of NY to get paid for a bunion I did in November 2006, I was finally told that the claim was processed properly in July 2007 and according to the "EMed" podiatry contract, I'll be paid in JANUARY 2008!I've been dealing with the low fees the HIP and other plans pay and I really had enough. It just doesn't pay to see patients when we lose money. We all complain about politics and we re-elect the same losers and in the same vein we complain about insurance plans and we continue to take them.

It's out own fault and we need to drop out, NOW. Insurance companies won't significantly raise our fees no matter how much we yell. They have us where they want us and drop fees consistently only "because they can" and we let them. After 27 years in practice, I've had enough and seen enough and will start dropping these plans. If we as a profession don't become pro-active in areas where this is endemic, it just won't pay to be a podiatrist anymore. The APMA can't help us, we can only help ourselves by saying no more.
