REMEMBERING 9/11 |
Editor’s note: On this, the 21st anniversary of 9/11, we continue our proud tradition of publishing the following note from the editor, which was published in PM News on 9/12/01 and circulated via the Internet throughout the world.
It is just after 3 AM here in New York City and I simply can't sleep. Looking out the window of my bedroom on the 17th floor, there is an unobstructed view of the Manhattan skyline. I search again for the once familiar sight of the two tall white buildings that marked the lower end of the skyscraper-filled island. All I see are some eerie search lights of the rescue crews.
Like everyone else, I have been in shock all day, particularly since I witnessed in real-time the morbid views of the second plane hitting the World Trade Center and the sequential collapse of both towers.
 |
World Trade Center 9/11/01 |
The gamut of emotions runs from shock, fear, sadness, to anger. Barely one half-century after the Holocaust, despite all our technological advances, man remains uncivilized. The realization sets in that the terrorists who committed this crime could have and still could set off a nuclear bomb, killing millions. The safety and security we have taken for granted in America is and will never be the same.
My phone has been ringing all day. Family and friends call to determine that everyone is safe. My mom calls to tell me my brother was scheduled to be at the WTC at 9 AM and was at the subway station when the first plane hit. Had the plane hit five minutes later, he would have been on an elevator headed for certain death.
Unfortunately, many thousands were not so lucky, including many employees of Blue Cross/Blue Shield, which only a few years ago moved from midtown to this location. There will be many tears shed as the names of those murdered in this horrific disaster become known, many unnecessary funerals to attend. So many innocent lives lost for no reason. So many families destroyed.
Later this morning, my wife and I will donate blood and attempt to do what we can in this time of crisis. We know the entire podiatric community will collectively pray for those affected by this catastrophe and provide whatever support is needed.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS |
VA Podiatrist Uses Electromagnetic Therapy to Promote Healing
Ben Pearl, DPM is bringing a new treatment for pain and injuries to the DC metro area. Electromagnetic therapy (bone stimulators) have been used for several decades to assist with bone healing. A new electromagnetic therapy is now available in the office that provides healing capabilities for tendon, muscle, fasciitis, and bone. It can also provide pain relief from arthritis, nerve damage, and help with post-operative pain. A series of treatments is necessary to achieve optimum results. The following video highlights the technology for wound healing:
|
Click on photo to view short video |
Pearl added that unlike hyperbaric oxygen which requires a full body chamber, an electromagnetic device provides high-end technology that is in reach for private practices; he has not encountered any patients experiencing pain during the treatment. Electromagnetic therapy can provide synergy with other treatments like shockwave and orthobiologics.

QUERIES (CLINICAL) |
Query: Foreign Bodies Mystery
I recently had a patient who was born with only a middle and ring finger on one hand. In 1983, he had the 2nd toe and a partial 2nd metatarsal resection and the toe was successfully made into an opposable thumb.
|
Can you identify these foreign bodies? |
He was in the Navy but had no other surgical procedures nor trauma to the foot such as stepping on something at a beach that he remembered. Does anyone have any idea what these multiple fragments could represent. Both of us were surprised when we saw the x-rays. This is definitely not an x-ray artifact.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2A |
With deepest sympathy on the passing of Dr. Warren Simmonds. He was a strong factor in podiatric medicine and its related organizations. He will be missed by those who knew him. He made many significant contributions to our profession over the years and was always there when we all needed his wisdom.
Rest in peace my friend. The profession has lost an individual with great dignity, compassion, and knowledge. Rest in peace and may his memory be blessed.
Arthur E. Helfand, DPM, Narberth, PA
I am shocked at the news of the passing of my friend and colleague, Dr. Warren Simmonds. Dr. Simmonds in addition to so many of his podiatric accomplishments, was the executive director of the American Society of Podiatric Medicine, which was one of the first APMA specialty groups. Under Dr. Simmonds' guidance, the society went on to run many academic programs in the medical aspects of our profession at venues in many parts of the country. Dr. Simmonds was all giving and never said no when asked to serve our profession. I will always miss him.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2 |
RE: The Passing of Warren L. Simmonds, DPM
I was very sad to hear of Warren's passing. I first met him as a resident in the late '70s, he was a most kind and affable professional and we developed a lifelong friendship. During my practice years in south Florida, he was a great friend and mentor.
When the podiatric medical school developed at Barry, he was welcoming of the program and as always, offered his aid and assistance to the school and its students. I always admired his ability to remain calm and mild-mannered throughout his personal and professional life regardless of the situation. He will be sorely missed.
Chet Evans, DPM, Winter Garden, FL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A |
From: Dan Michaels, DPM
I'd like to thank Dr. Stewart for his video on expensive OTC orthotics. I know him and agree with Dr. Blanken in his opinion of Dr. Stewart. Dr. Stewart is a straight shooter, and very giving of his time and energy to the profession in our state. He was simply trying to highlight the outrageous price people are paying after they get conned into buying useless OTC orthotic devices. It is shocking that this is occurring, which is the point in your reply, that I can agree with, Dr. Ressler. You can see just that expression from Dr. Stewart in his video that he offered to anyone to use for free. Thanks again for providing this video for us and highlighting this issue.
Dan Michaels, DPM, Frederick/Hagerstown, MD

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B |
From: Keith L. Gurnick, DPM
As podiatrists, we are all very aware that there is available to the consumer a plethora of shoe inserts to help alleviate pain. This includes non-custom, non-prescription products that can be purchased off-the-shelf in retail stores or on-line and can include flat cushioned insoles, contoured cushioned foot supports, and hybrid devices that are both supportive and padded. Also, available are products from retail "foot comfort" stores where salespeople can guide the consumer towards purchasing various pre-manufactured products that also might be soft, padded, or more often made of semi-rigid plastics and are more supportive. These "salespeople" are not doctors and cannot diagnose nor prescribe custom orthotics. Frankly, I don't know how they get away with what they do.
Custom prescription foot orthotics are only available from licensed professionals and doctors or laboratories with a prescription. Therein lies the difference that should be explained...
Editor's note: Dr. Gurnick's extended-length letter can be read here.
