OH Podiatrist Discusses Stress Fractures
If you're like most people, you probably run to maintain mental clarity and relieve stress. However, Haim Cohen DPM, a podiatrist at the TriHealth Orthopedic and Spine Institute, says if you don't take your regimen seriously, you may end up adding stress to your life – in the form of an overuse injury. Anyone who walks can develop a stress fracture. You don’t have to be unhealthy or have medical problems.
|
Dr. Haim Cohen |
"A stress fracture usually leads to pain and swelling early on. However, typically, for the first two to four weeks, you aren’t even able to see a stress fracture on an x-ray. Treatment: An x-ray may not show there is a stress fracture for up to four to six weeks after the fracture occurred, so your doctor may order a bone scan or MRI to help diagnose. Since a stress fracture is a break in the bone, treatment requires a significant amount of rest for it to heal, usually six to eight weeks. Most of the time a walking boot will be prescribed for protection. Stress fractures will take people out of their sporting activities for quite some time," says Dr. Cohen.

$7,000 Bill for Lidocaine Prescribed by TX Podiatrist
Courtney Segura was in the middle of training for a marathon when a podiatrist told her she had plantar fasciitis, a common injury for runners. The doctor prescribed Segura with a topical cream that she was told would numb the pain. But instead of asking where she would like the prescription filled, the doctor’s office said the prescription would come from a mail-away pharmacy based in Dallas. “She didn't give me any options. She just said, 'This is the pharmacy that we use,'” Segura said. Several tubes of an ointment arrived later that week, and according to Segura, the pharmacy then refilled the prescription without her permission. Her husband, David, noticed that the pharmacy billed the couple’s insurance around $7,000 for the ointments.
“In the past, these pharmacies have been charging upward of $10,000 for these particular products,” Gay Dodson, executive director for the Texas State Board of Pharmacy, said. However, the prescription label for what Segura was shipped did not indicate anything was compounded reading, “Lidocaine 5 percent.” A podiatrist who oversees standard of care for the Texas podiatry board confirmed that a prescription for lidocaine cream should cost a fraction of what the Seguras were billed.

PediRoller Can Help Prevent Plantar Fasciitis: UK Podiatrist
“Plantar fasciitis is a common and very painful foot condition, referring to inflammation of the tissue that runs from the heel along the arch of the foot. When running, the repetition of the foot hitting the ground causes damage to the tissue, resulting in a tight feeling in the sole of the foot," says Dave Wain, Carnation Footcare podiatrist.
|
Dave Wain |
“Regular use of the PediRoller will go a long way to warding off dreaded plantar fasciitis, as it can help reduce inflammation of the affected tissue and strengthen muscles in the sole of the foot,” says Wain. Leave the PediRoller in the fridge overnight and roll each foot back and forth over it for five minutes.

For Each Hour of Clinical Time, Docs Spend 2 on Desk Work
Physicians in ambulatory settings spent nearly two hours on clerical work for every one hour they dedicated to direct clinical face time with patients during the clinic day, according to a study published Monday online in Annals of Internal Medicine.
The researchers monitored 57 U.S. physicians in family medicine, internal medicine, cardiology, and orthopedics for a total of 430 hours over five weeks in 2015, applying a time-and-motion methodology to this direct-observation study. The 57 physicians observed in the study spent 27% of their total daily time on direct clinical face time with patients -- versus 49.2% on health records and desk work.

7 Reasons Why Physicians Work Locum Tenens - Part 2
Most physicians have heard of locum tenens and many have worked alongside locums doctors in a hospital or clinic. However, the majority of doctors are unaware of the benefits of locums or even how these temporary assignments really work.
The reasons physicians do locums vary, but here are seven primary motives for working locum tenens:
2. The chance to test drive a job — Locums assignments are a great way to see if you like a facility or location. It gives you the chance to have a working interview, whether it's for a few days or a few months, and determine if you would like to work there permanently. This option is particularly attractive to recent graduates who are trying to figure out what they want in a job before signing a multi-year contract.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
Query: Locum Tenens for Podiatrists
Is there currently a legitimate state and federal pathway to enable locum tenens for podiatrists?
Steven J. Kaniadakis, DPM
Editor's comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. Yes. Locum tenens rules apply to podiatrists in the same way as to other Medicare providers.
