AT THE COLLEGES

NYCPM Holds Sixth Annual Residency Fair

On a recent Friday, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) held its Sixth Annual Residency Fair, at which representatives from forty-one hospitals, from ten states, talked with students about their hospitals’ externships and residency programs. Virtually all second- and third-year students attended, as did many first- and fourth-year students.

NYCPM’s sixth annual Residency Fair featured representatives from 41 programs from 10 states.

The Residency Fair was organized by Anna Wojcik and Spencer Monaco, both of the Class of 2013. According to students as well as the hospitals’ representatives, the residency fair was an extremely successful and informative event.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY

IL Podiatrist Co-Hosts Radio Show About Obesity and Children

With the obesity epidemic being labeled “America’s number one health threat” by the U.S. Surgeon General, “A national security threat” by the Pentagon, and costing America over $215 billion dollars annually according to the Brookings Institute, WDCB FM Public Radio in Glen Ellyn, IL announced the launching of a new 30 minute, weekly talk show entitled Kids Beating Obesity

Dr. Robert Weil

The co-hosts of the new show are local sports podiatrist and radio personality Dr. Bob Weil (host of The Sports Doctor on WDCB), and former teacher and coach Rick Osbourne who has written two books on the topic of childhood obesity prevention. According to Dr. Weil, “One of the main reasons we all initially wanted to launch Kids Beating Obesity was that nobody else in the radio market was systematically addressing this mother of all epidemics. In other words, we saw a gigantic void in the radio market and we decided to try to fill it.”

Majority of Georgia Docs Move to EHRs: Survey

Physicians and hospitals across the state are pondering a $64,000 question about computerizing the records of their government-insured patients. To encourage computerization, the federal government is offering incentives between $44,000 through Medicare and $64,000 through Medicaid.

So far, 55 percent of the state's physicians already took the plunge into electronic health records, or EHRs, according to those who participated in a March survey by the Medical Association of Georgia.

IN THE COURTS

Appeals Court Sides with White House on Healthcare Reform

In two opinions released at the same time, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, VA, on Thursday handed President Barack Obama significant victories in the ongoing legal battle over the year-old Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The appeals judges ruled that neither Liberty University, a Christian school in Virginia, nor the state of Virginia had standing to challenge the law that enacted one of the president's signature domestic initiatives.

The appeals court remanded both cases back to the trial courts with orders to dismiss for lack of subject matter jurisdiction. Experts say that the previous Atlanta and Cincinnati decisions created the classic split in the circuit courts that the U.S. Supreme Court looks for in deciding which cases it will take up for oral arguments.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)

Query: Statute of Limitation for Medicare Refund?

What is the time limit for Medicare to request a refund?

Michael Forman, DPM, Cleveland, OH

Editor's Comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. In general, Medicare is limited to go back three years according to the Medicare Financial Management Manual, Pub. 100-6, Chapter 3 Section 80, “Individual Overpayments Discovered Subsequent to the Third Year.”

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (CLINICAL)

RE: Cycling-specific Orthotics (Jeffrey A Petrinitz, DPM)
From: Paul Langer, DPM

I am a long distance cyclist. My experience has shown that the best custom-made foot orthotic for cycling is a thin neutral shell with no rearfoot post. A compressible forefoot post to the sulcus should be utilized to bring the knee into neutral position. A top cover from heel to toe will help keep the orthotic in place. Metatarsal pressure dispersion can be incorporated into the device as well, but it is important to be mindful of the space constraints of bicycling shoes.

RE: Professional Attire (Alan Mauser, DPM)
From: Eric Edelman, DPM, Fay Mushlin

I buy scrub tops from an online company called Uniform Advantage - about $30 with the name and podiatry caduceus. They can be pressed/ironed for a neat appearance.

Monogrammed Podiatric Scrub Top

I wear casual pants with them. Wearing wrinkled or stained hospital scrubs is different, and I don't think the patients appreciate that.

Eric Edelman, DPM, Syracuse, NY, ericedelman@gmail.com

In our office, male doctors wear regular long sleeve shirts with our practice name monogrammed on the shirt pocket. It looks very professional and is comfortable. They found the lab coats and ties uncomfortable when leaning over to treat the patients. Our female podiatrist also works without a lab coat and wears a short or long sleeve blouse. The support staff all wear the same color scrubs. The scrubs are not like what is worn in the hospital. The tops usually have some kind of trim in a contrasting color and are extremely fashionable. We provide the staff their scrubs, so it is also very cost-effective for them - no expense to have a work wardrobe and no dry cleaning costs.

RE: APMA Nixes MD/DO Referendum (Michael Rosenblatt, DPM)
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM

The letter of Dr. Rosenblatt regarding the "DPM/MD/DO" degree remains, as much of the prior discussion in PM magazine discussion regarding this matter, rather confusing to me. The podiatric profession cannot unilaterally award an MD or DO degree to a DPM. A recognized combined DPM/MD/DO degree is possible if a curriculum is completed and approved by the appropriate medical or osteopathic school(s) and regulatory agencies, and would subsequently require definition at the state medical or osteopathic level, as well as appropriate local legislative action.

The mere act of a podiatric college declaring the authority to award an MD degree to a DPM would generate an...
