Podiatrists are #3 Ranked Specialists by Patients
While every other industry has embraced the creed, “The customer is always right,” healthcare has approached treating the patient as a consumer with skepticism. When it came to the highest-rated doctors, surprisingly, not one primary care specialist cracked the top five. Instead, specialists and surgeons represented the top of the list. Vitals found that patient feedback was second in importance to a doctor’s treatment philosophy when choosing a doctor.
Highest Ranked Specialists
#1 Neuromusculoskeletal Specialists
#2 Thoracic Surgeons
#3 Podiatrists
#4 Plastic Surgeons
#5 Colon & Rectal Surgeons
On the bottom of the list, were psychiatrists, often vilified for their cool, disconnected demeanor, along with specialists that people see on their worse days, like emergency doctors and pain management specialists.

Umbilical Cord is Shown to Help Chronic Wounds Heal
Cryopreserved umbilical cord, or cUC, allografts healed nearly 80% of chronic wounds in a retrospective review of a Texas veterans clinic. Researchers examined the charts of 57 patients with 64 chronic wounds, all of them treated at the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System in Temple, TX.
|
Dr. Mark Couture |
Principal investigator, podiatrist Dr. Mark Couture, debrided the wounds in his clinic or in an operating room, then placed the cUC directly over the wound bed and secured it with a non-adherent layer and moist gauze or sterile dressing. Additional debridement and cUC were given, if needed, weekly. In all, 51 wounds, or 79.7%, healed completely, with an average of 3.43 applications. According to the July issue of Wounds, 51% of the wounds had healed by four weeks.

Canadian Home That Proves Living Above a Podiatrist Can be Luxurious
This property, a turreted brick home with a commercial space on the main floor occupied by Toronto podiatrist, Jeffrey A. Liebman, DPM, sold this week for 1.9 million dollars.

House above the office of Dr. Jeffrey Liebman |
Ever since the late 1970s, when this building was renovated into its current state, one podiatrist or another has leased the main floor. The sellers loved having the second-floor apartment as a pied à terre, but they’ve decided to sell so they can spend more time at their lakefront property.

ACA UPDATE |
Burwell Says ACA Exchanges Are Viable, Even Without Congressional Assistance
Addressing concerns about rising premiums and dwindling competition, Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell asserted Thursday that the federal health law's insurance markets clearly are sustainable. Willingness by Congress to help smooth out problems would definitely help, Burwell told reporters, but it is not absolutely essential. Congressional Republicans committed to repealing "Obamacare" are unlikely to assist.
HealthCare.gov and other state-level markets provide taxpayer subsidized private health insurance and now cover about 11 million people. "Even using the administrative tools that we have," those markets remain viable, Burwell said. Asked if they were sustainable even without legislative fixes, Burwell answered, "Yes."

7 Reasons Why Physicians Work Locum Tenens - Part 1
Most physicians have heard of locum tenens and many have worked alongside locums doctors in a hospital or clinic. However, the majority of doctors are unaware of the benefits of locums or even how these temporary assignments really work.
The reasons physicians do locums vary but here are seven primary motives for working locum tenens:
1. A cure for burnout — Many doctors suffering from burnout find that rather than a change in career, they just need a change in environment. Taking a temporary job in a new facility or even a new city or state can be re-invigorating and makes practicing medicine enjoyable again.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) |
From: Richard Willner, DPM
Mike Rosenblatt's observation to get a referral to a neurologist is dead on. I have been privileged to be very good friends with a neurologist and watched him find a systemic diagnosis for pedal concerns when there were no local answers. For some reason, he was always interested in foot concerns and pain. I watched him have patients take off their socks and perform neurological tests on the feet. In his home, there were always podiatry books and journals.

RE: Five Ways to Decrease Patient Wait Times
From: Hal Ornstein, DPM
Sure, we all would love a 100% return on a financial investment. In the same vein, you can receive a high return on time (one of the unreplaceable things in life) and significantly reduce waiting time and stress while increasing patient and staff satisfaction by simply starting each shift ten minutes early. You will find there are always patients there before the start time. Almost all podiatrists whom I suggested this to report that they consistently finish each shift twenty or more minutes earlier. This is a simple change with large impact. And there is the 100% return on investment of time!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
RE: The Truth Regarding Medicare and CR vs. DR
From: Kim Antol
It has been a hot topic lately with a lot of misinformation being disseminated. Beginning in 2017, only if you are still using film…Medicare will be deducting 20% from reimbursements. The proposed 7% payment reduction against CR goes into effect in 2018, (not 2017 as everyone seems to believe), and only involves Medicare, and not until 2023 (7 years from now) proposed to 10%. However the estimated loss in revenue (especially as x-ray reimbursements are continually being lowered to $20 or less) means just a $1.40 reduction, and will in no way cover the additional expense for a small office to convert to DR.
A quality DR system is much more costly with expensive on-site installation charges requiring modification to your existing x-ray by a state-certified technician, and annual calibration with support fees of...
