APMA Nixes MD/DO Referendum
Despite polls that have consistently shown that podiatrists are in favor of a degree change, APMA members will not be voting on a recently proposed referendum submitted to APMA by five APMA state components. The referendum, written by PM editor Barry Block, DPM, JD would have set a goal for APMA that future podiatrists would graduate with MD or DO degrees.
|
Dr. Barry Block |
The APMA Bylaws committee ruled that the proposed referendum was contrary to APMA Bylaws, and that granting degrees was the providence of the Council on Podiatric Medicine and not APMA. Surveys conducted by Podiatry Management for the past two decades have consistently reported that nearly two out of three podiatrists favor a degree change.

IL Podiatrist Opens Wound Care Clinics in Hospital and Office
For 30 years, Dr. Frank William Zappa has served the needs of community members with foot and ankle disorders, and performed complex surgical procedures. Zappa has opened a dedicated wound care clinic at St. Anthony Hospital and also in his office (named WALKS Wound Kare Centers). Zappa is the section chief of podiatry and the vice chairman of surgery at St. Anthony Hospital, where he also serves on the credentials committee.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW |
WY Podiatrist Sentenced for Medicare Fraud
A former podiatrist from Luzerne County will spend time in federal prison for illegally billing Medicare. Paul Chromey of Plains was sentenced Friday to 12 months in prison and one year parole. He was ordered to repay $764,000. Officials said $100,000 was to be paid Friday. He owns Northeast Pedorthic Services, which is also known as Wyoming Valley Pedorthic Center.
Prosecutors said Chromey was barred from billing Medicare and other healthcare programs for 10 years beginning in 2000. They said he billed Medicare for diabetic shoe inserts and other items between January, 2006 and July, 2009.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Make Your LinkedIn Profile Stand Out
You’re a results-oriented, innovative problem solver with extensive experience, a real team player who is highly motivated and dynamic, and you have a proven track record. What’s wrong with that? Add the words fast-paced and entrepreneurial and you’ve hit the Top 10 overused profile terms, according to a LinkedIn survey. To differentiate yourself, describe your skills and accomplishments with more specific terms. Add even more detail with these:
-
A relevant photo background. Instead of a standard headshot, post a picture that shows something about your work.
-
Links to other interests. Use other applications to reveal more about yourself. For example, show what you’re reading with Amazon’s Reading List.

QUERIES (CLINICAL) |
Query: Cycling-specific Orthotics
My patient is a recreational cyclist. When riding, he experiences a burning pain in the forefoot and numbness in the toes when riding beyond one hour at a time. The exam of his feet is unremarkable for any musculoskeletal abnormalities and symptoms are only experienced with cycling. My initial recommendations were to wear wider cycling shoes, change cleat position more proximal to the met heads, and to change pedal/cleat brand (he wears speed play with float).
All suggestions were met with objections, but what did work was that I fabricated a quarter inch dancer's pad out of PPT glued to his insole proximal to the met heads. We would like to proceed with custom-molded orthoses (cycling specific) with this modification, and ask the forum for recommendations/suggestions of the best labs for cycling-specific orthoses.

Query: Integrated Billing System for Practice Fusion
I have been using Practice Fusion and am now ready to move into an integrated billing solution. The recommended billing service costs $150 per month per doctor. There are free or cheaper alternative billing systems out there. Has anyone had luck integrating them with Practice Fusion?

RE: Study Provides First Evidence-Based Colchicine Dosing Recommendations
From: Chris Albritton, DPM
Every practicing podiatrist in America needs to be aware of this new information.
"Colchicine, a widely used drug for the prevention and treatment of gout flares, interacts dangerously with many commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics, antihypertensive drugs, antifungals, immunosuppressants, and protease inhibitors, according to a study published in the August issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism. However, most patients can take colchicines safely with these medications as long as the dose is adjusted, the study indicated.
To develop evidence-based colchicine-dosing algorithms with improved safety, a series of drug-drug interaction (DDI) studies was performed to assess the... "

RE: AZ Podiatrist Recommends Barefoot Exercising in Gym
From: Helen Gentile, DPM
I do personal training as a hobby, and I have never seen a weight room or cardio room that allows anyone to have bare feet. The athletic facilities that I am familiar with don't permit people with open toed shoes, flip flops or sandals to enter. Aside from the obvious hygiene issues, the liability from a foot getting mangled in a machine or a dropped weight injuring a foot far outweighs any potential benefit. Other regions of the country may have different standards, but I would be wary of recommending this practice.

RE: Medicare Proposes No Podiatric Coverage For Pneumatic Compression Therapy (Bret Ribotsky DPM)
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM
The commentary by Dr. Ribotsky regarding respect or lack thereof for the DPM degree is, in my humble opinion, correct. If respect for the DPM degree does not begin within our own profession, one ought not expect that respect for the degree from those outside our profession.
Last evening, I was deposed as the treating podiatric physician in a worker's compensation case. The attorney for the opposing side asked me how a podiatrist could challenge the contrary opinion offered by "an orthopedic surgeon with a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery." I simply stated the truth. I went to...
