RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1 |
RE: The Passing of Robert Arthur Eckles, DPM, MPH
It is with profound sorrow and sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Bob Eckles following an acute and serious illness. Upon his arrival at NYCPM in 2003, Bob quickly established himself as a popular professor and noted clinician in the Department of Orthopedic Sciences. His command of the subject area and his ability to explain in comprehensible terms allowed him to train generations of students and residents. Bob's administrative skills were put to good use in his later roles of Dean for Clinical Education, Dean for Graduate Medical Education, and Residency Director.
|
Dr. Robert Eckles |
Upon his retirement from NYCPM in 2021, he returned to where he had lived in New Zealand and remained active in education and the biomechanical arena. NYCPM and the entire podiatric profession have been blessed through the efforts and contributions of Dr. Eckles. He leaves behind his beloved wife Jeanne and two children, Frances and Freeman. May he rest in peace.
Michael J Trepal, DPM, Dean, NYCPM at Touro University

I'll always consider T as one of the greatest teachers in podiatric medicine.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Ways to Refresh Your Front Desk for a Better Patient Experience
Here are some ways to refresh your front desk and strengthen both patient satisfaction and staff performance.
6. Support staff with financial scripts
Talking about money isn’t easy, but it’s part of the front-desk role. Staff who hesitate or fumble with copay collection can create confusion and hurt revenue. Training through role-play ensures staff know what to say. Instead of asking, “Are you able to pay today?” they can confidently say, “Your co-pay today is $25. How would you like to handle that—cash, card, or check?” According to Medical Economics, having clear policies and staff confidence makes payment discussions smoother for everyone.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STUDENT ENROLLMENT) |
RE: Student Enrollment Numbers for Class of '29
From: Alan Sherman, DPM
I couldn't help noticing the announcement in the Sept 3 #8,098 issue of PM News that the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) at Touro University welcomed 86 new students this term. That's a good-sized class and they deserve congratulations! But I find that odd considering the concern that many of us have had regarding the total number of applicants this year. I don't want to misquote but I do recall seeing announcements of a total applicant pool in the 500s this year. This suggests the other schools have very low numbers. Would members of this community let us know how many total applicants there were and how many students the other schools matriculated?
Alan Sherman, DPM, Boca Raton, FL
Editor's note: A previous PM News story mentioned that the WesternU Class of '29 has 31 students. AACPM says that they will release enrollment statistics in mid-September.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS AND THE MILITARY) |
From: Evan Meltzer, DPM
As I have written in a previous issue of PM News, I was fortunate to have an Army Health Professions Scholarship to pay for my four years at PCPM/Temple from 1973-1977. During my time as a student I was a Second Lieutenant in the Army Reserve. After graduation, I became a First Lieutenant and remained at that rank for two years while serving four years of Active Duty as an Army podiatrist at Fort Meade, Maryland. I was promoted to Captain for my final two years at Fort Meade.
When my four-year commitment was coming to a close, I was summoned to the office of the Executive Officer at my hospital. He said, “Meltzer, you’re a good soldier and should consider staying in the Army.” I responded by saying, “Sir, I’m a doctor, not a soldier.” I left Fort Meade and began my private practice in Ithaca, NY. I hope that Dr. Lang is taking advantage of the excellent medical care offered by the VA.
Evan Meltzer, DPM (Retired), Rio Rancho, NM
