New Study Predicts Podiatry Among Future Most-Wanted Jobs
If you’re an occupational therapist, podiatrist, or audiologist, getting a job in the next decade will be simplicity itself. You’ll have a much harder time, though, if you’re a movie projectionist, typist, food prep worker, or dancer. That’s according to a study released today by the Conference Board, covering 464 occupations in the U.S. that range from sewage plant workers (in demand) to judicial law clerks (not in demand). It covers the period from 2012 to 2022.
There’s more concern about shortages in health-related occupations because the aging of the population will simultaneously increase the need for medical workers and decrease their supply as people retire. “Among doctors, optometrists, and podiatrists are the specialists most at risk of shortage, with the general physicians and surgeons category not far behind,” the summary said.

Canadian Podiatrist Explains Physics of High Heels
So what makes heels so unhealthy? The answer is a no-brainer for Dr. Hartley Miltchin: “Humans were meant to walk flat on their two feet. Anything that changes this dynamic can create chaos, due to an instability in foot function and misalignment of the structures above. When we walk flat, 50 per cent of our body weight rests on our heel and the other 50 per cent rests on the ball of the foot.”
|
|
Dr. Hartley Miltchin |
But when wearing heels, even as low as two inches, a paradigm shift of our body weight occurs. Ten per cent of our body weight transfers to our heels, while the remaining majority of our weight, 90 per cent, is left teetering on the ball of the foot. Wearing heels becomes equivalent to standing on your tippy toes!

MI Podiatrist Sentenced to 9 Months for Embezzlement
While he made it clear that he wants Dr. Regina L. Spears-Everett to pay back the thousands of dollars she stole, a Kalamazoo judge said Tuesday he hoped the jail time he gave the Portage podiatrist would send a message to others who see fit to prey on the elderly and vulnerable. "There is a need to at least send some message that a defendant cannot engage in this type of conduct and may ultimately have to serve incarceration at varying levels depending on their behavior," Circuit Judge Alexander C. Lipsey said just before he ordered Spears-Everett to spend the next nine months in the Kalamazoo County Jail.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) | |
From: Stephen Musser, DPM, Judd Davis, DPM
Make sure the footgear is a proper fit. Second, it may not be an infection, but possible dermatitis from a possible insect bite. Prescribe a steroid, taper, and see her back in a week.
If there's any temperature sensitivity, then a glomus tumor may be a consideration.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (ACADEMIC) | |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
Over 40 years ago, basic pathology textbooks in this country showed an association between gout and myocardial infarctions. What is different today is that the cause is clearer. Patients presenting with gout tend to have high serum cholesterol levels, along with abnormally elevated low density lipids and low high density lipids. Very often, when taking a history of a patient presenting with gout for the first time, the patient will inform the doctor that he or she already has a history of cardiovascular disease and is taking a statin. If the patient does not have this history, it is advisable to order fasting cholesterol levels along with lipid studies. If the results are abnormal, make an appropriate referral.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) | |
From: Hal Ornstein, DPM
David Helfman said it so well with the large opportunity for podiatry in the future. With the increasing number of diabetics, an epidemic of obesity and co-morbidities, there is an ever increasing need for podiatric care. Darwinism has reined in our profession, as the busy get busier and those struggling often having a more difficult time with their practices. I agree that the best solution is for a consultant to work with a practice to put systems in place and help identify the lost opportunities in treatments and services that when provided, result in better outcomes as well as more compliant and satisfied patients.
I also suggest that you read every issue of Podiatry Management Magazine, read books on practice and people management, and check out membership and meetings of the American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management (aappm.org). I continue to be in awe of the many busy practices I see, which most commonly begin with a podiatrist who takes control of his or her destiny and takes action for success.
