SUCCESS TIPS FOR THE MASTERS

Editor's Note: PM News is proud to present this reprinted excerpt from Meet the Masters.

Bret Ribotsky: If you could alter the podiatric educational experience, what would you change?

Dr. Irvin Kanat

Irv Kanat: I think it is simplistic to say that there would be something to change. I think that the change has got to be an overall improvement. I am not going to single out any school, any class, or any subject but an overall improvement in the quality of the student, in the quality of the education, and an improvement in the residency programs. I am involved in that. I am always looking to make ours better as is every program director. When you raise the tide, all boats will flow better. You cannot just take any one item and say that is the answer. The answer is everything.

Dr. Neil Horsley

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday Night at 9 PM (EST). The next segment will feature  podiatric educator and leader Dr  Neil Horsley. You can register for this event by clicking here

RE: The Passing of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM

I'm sure that I don't have words or the ability at this point to describe what this great and good man meant to me and my late father, who were two of countless beneficiaries of his mentorship. I do, though, have a story. As an intern at Detroit's Monsignor Clement Kern Hospital for Special Surgery, we would round with our attendings in the afternoon. The first such occasion with Dr. Kanat was early in July and I remember it being horribly hot but I also remember that we all were very keen on this sweltering day to make a good impression.

We ambled down the hallway of the ward and after exiting each room and visiting each patient, he would pimp one intern after another. "Why do we use Vancomycin?" or "What is the name of this procedure and on whom was it first performed?" He would project in his unforgettably deep, resonant, stentorian voice.  At the end of the hallway, after our final patient of the evening, he spun around to me and boomed out, "Young Dr. Armstrong: How do you treat people?" I stopped for a moment and replied, "Well, Dr. Kanat, that's easy, Sir. I treat people the way that I would want to be treated." There was a pause and a smile from him. "WRONG. You treat people the way THEY want to be treated." I didn't know precisely what that meant at the time, but I do now. Every aspiring doctor-- every patient-- and every profession-- needs a little something different. Dr. Kanat was that something different. He was something great.

RE: The Passing of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM

I first met Irv in 1982 when I interviewed for a residency position at Kern Hospital. Irv called my home shortly after the interview to inform me that I was the "first alternate" and that he "guaranteed" that I would get a spot. Well, I did not get a spot and begin my career as a podiatric physician under Irv's tutelage. However, Irv became a mentor and friend to me over the next thirty years as I began attending the APMA House of Delegates. He agreed to give my first nominating speech when I initially ran for the APMA Board of Trustees. Because the meeting was pressed for time, Irv never delivered that speech on my behalf. But, at every HOD for the next 13 years, Irv carried his speech with him and showed it to me. More importantly, he continued to offer advice and counsel and I know that who I became as a podiatrist was largely influenced by Irv. After every HOD, Irv wrote me a a hand-written note encouraging me to strive for excellence. I will dearly miss him.

RE: The Passing of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM

There is no question that podiatry has lost a giant and we have all lost a friend. We all stood in awe of him while he told us exactly what we should do, how we should do it, and when we should do it. It was all done with the greatest eloquence, kindness and concern for our beloved profession. There is a Biblical proverb which says, "A tree is best measured when it is down." We shall note and realize that more and more as problems present themselves, and the question will be asked, I wonder what Irv would say? Our hearts go out to Nancy and all of the family at this time of sorrow.

RE: The Passing of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM

I learned today of the untimely passing of Dr. Irv Kanat. Irv was the President of the APMA the year I completed my residency training and entered private practice. I have had the privilege of serving with him in the House of Delegates and on other APMA committees since 1979. It only takes a brief review of his APMA history to realize what an influence this man was, and will continue to be, on the profession of podiatry. While we were often on the opposite sides of political debate, there could be no doubt that his constant goal was the betterment of the profession. I grew to respect this man very deeply and valued his opinions and perspective. He made me a better person for having known him. I will miss his leadership, his dedication ,and most of all, his friendship. The podiatry world will be a sadder place without him.

RE: The Passing of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM

Larger than life is a description appropriate for giants, those who put a cause before themselves. In other words, a phrase perfect to describe Irv Kanat.

Always the "surgeon," when he met the American College of Foot & Ankle Orthopedics and Medicine officers at the HOD one year, he questioned them at first, but after he learned about their mission and goals, he became a solid and meaningful supporter of the organization.

If Dr. Kanat could reclaim for himself the hours he gave to podiatry, to his residents, to the HOD, even to people like me, he would have had years to enjoy for himself and his family. But then he wouldn't have been Irv Kanat, right? A giant. The rare irreplaceable leader. May he rest in peace and may we always be better for having known him.

RE: The Passing of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM

I was fortunate to become employed at Kern Hospital as a teenager, hired by Dr. Earl Kaplan during the “heyday” of the hospital, sterilizing instruments. Dr. Kanat’s guidance from those early days has always been a powerful force in my life. Teaching me the nuances of every department I worked in at the hospital, he was always there for me. He was a stickler for spelling and grammar, and our employees at Bako may now understand, I did not come by this without the “eagle eye” of Dr. Kanat (and before spell check)! Later on, he was supportive of my career, whatever I was doing in the podiatric pathology lab business, and always interested. I will miss our phone conversations, a quick call for his advice; he was always there for me. Dr. Brad Bakotic said it best yesterday, “one of my favorite persons on the planet.” I will miss you dearly, Dr. Kanat.

RE: The Passing of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM

I am deeply saddened and shaken to read about the death of Irv Kanat, a true giant in this profession. I had gotten to know Irv over the past many years and considered him, as so many others do, a friend. I am sure many will recount his myriad accomplishments. I just wanted to give a quick personal anecdote. I could always count on Irv to be in attendance whenever I was giving a lecture anywhere in the Detroit area. It had to be around 10 years ago, after a dinner meeting, that Irv mentioned to me that he lived right around the corner from the restaurant and he would be happy to bring me over to his place for a nightcap and then drive me back to my hotel. We went back to his home and sat in his den until late just talking about life both in and out of podiatric medicine. Getting to know this great man in such a personal fashion has remained with me for all of these many years and remains one of my cherished personal and professional memories. Rest in peace, my friend.

RE: The Passing of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM

It’s sad to hear about the passing of Irv Kanat, but what a legacy he has left! He and Earl Kaplan trained a good deal of the best of our generation of podiatrists at Civic/Kern. If Earl was the father of modern podiatry, as Barry Block referred to him in 2009, Irv was its proud uncle. Truly one of the greatest podiatric residency directors of all time, he raised the standards of podiatric residency education enormously by his example and by the fine programming that he developed for his residents. In fact, he and Earl created a standard that has inspired all podiatric residency directors since the '50s.

How many podiatrists practicing today, and how many of our finest leaders were trained by Irv? Irv was a great supporter of PRESENT Online Residency Education from its start 9 years ago, and made many great feature suggestions that we built into the program in subsequent years. He was one of the first directors to incorporate it into his teaching plan for the residents. In fact, he was one of the first directors to have a teaching plan. I've always loved working with this kind man. We owe him so much.

A giant has fallen. Indeed, he was among a very special handful of leaders of our profession dating back to the 1950’s & Detroit “Civic Hospital days” that created the template for all of us who have followed. His life’s achievements will be chronicled by those who knew him best. He was one of my top 10 heros of our profession. It is a painful loss.

RE: The Passing of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM

The profession has lost one of its true gentlemen. I will miss his mentorship, sense of humor and friendship. The podiatric physician of today has benefitted greatly from his ceaseless devotion to furthering the cause, whether it was his passion and eloquence in addressing the house of delegates, or simply his spending that extra hour or two to ensure that a resident was competent in the performance of a particular procedure. Irv, you will be sorely missed.
