AT THE cOLLEGES |
NYCPM Holds White Coat Ceremony for Incoming Students
The New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) at Touro University held its White Coat Ceremony on Wed August 20th at the New York Academy of Medicine for the Class of 2029. A total of 86 students are entering this fall with only about a third from the state of New York. NYCPM draws students from around the country and around the world, creating a dynamic and exciting environment within the school, unique to many of the nation's podiatry colleges.
|
NYCPM Class of 2029 at White Coat Ceremony |
"NYCPM is uniquely situated in a diverse and vibrant Harlem community within New York City, offering students the best environment to learn and experience an array of cultures and types of cases within the patient population," said Michael Trepal, DPM, Dean of NYCPM.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Ways to Refresh Your Front Desk for a Better Patient Experience
Here are some ways to refresh your front desk and strengthen both patient satisfaction and staff performance.
5. Use technology to reduce paperwork
Manual forms are time-consuming for patients and staff. Digital tools—such as patient portals, pre-visit questionnaires and self-scheduling apps—allow much of the work to be done in advance. This not only reduces bottlenecks at check-in but also improves accuracy, since patients can enter their own data. Medical Economics has highlighted EHR best practices that show how automation streamlines front-desk processes, freeing staff to focus on service rather than data entry.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY |
Five Tips to Get Your Estate Plan In Order Now
The good news is it doesn't have to be an arduous process or break the bank. Whether you have a plan or need to create one, here are five estate planning tips for 2025.
2. Plan for your digital footprint
Whether it's your online presence on social media sites like Facebook and Instagram, your digital subscriptions to Netflix or Spotify, or your online investment and bank accounts, these days everyone has some form of a digital footprint that you may want to protect in the event of your death.
A law, known as the Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act (RUFADDA), which passed in 2015, addresses that. It creates a legal framework pertaining to how executors, trustees, and other fiduciaries can access and manage the digital assets of a deceased person. Under the law, digital assets are to be handled the same way as physical assets. At last count, 47 states follow this law. The only three that don’t are Louisiana, Massachusetts, and Oklahoma.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE MILITARY) |
RE: My Military Podiatry Career
From: Joel Lang, DPM
It is impressive that podiatrists now enjoy the military ranks of Captain, Major, and Colonels, and are even provided with scholarships. But it was not always so. My story.
When I graduated from NYCPM in 1960, there were only 6 officer (2nd Lieutenant) positions in the Army and they were all filled at the time. For some reason, I was the only one in my class who served in the military. The others must have known something that I didn’t know.
I was “drafted” into the Army on October 20, 1960 as a lowly raw recruit and yes, I was married at the time. I went through the usual basic training involving marching, marksmanship, grenades, gas (tear gas and chlorine) chambers, PT, KP, guard duty, and even the privilege of crawling through mud and snow under live machine gun...
Editor's note: Dr. Lang's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-VLINICAL) |
From: Scott M. Schonfeld, DPM
In the future, Dr. Musella needs to clarify his post to reflect if the bagel is plain or if “special add-ons” were added to his bagel such as cream cheese, butter, tuna, etc. I suspect Dr. Shangold was referring to a plain bagel. According to an “AI Overview”, it specifies that the average price of a plain bagel is $2.00-$2.40, I agree with Dr. Shangold’s theory that a range of $200 to $240 which is 100x the price of the average plain bagel (without modifications in Hewlett, NY where Dr. Musella lists that he lives) is a fair price to charge for an office visit in 2025.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
I am so disappointed to learn of Terry's death. He was one year in front of me at the old Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine on Clark Street. Terry was the consummate gentleman. His quiet disarming demeanor won favor with all who knew him. He was a common sense guy who made clear common sense arguments on surgical controversies that were often tough to defeat. Terry was easy to be around and truly represented the best of the profession.
