Heel Pain in 6-14 Year Olds a Warning Sign: MO Podiatrist

Indoors and outdoors, youth athletes stay active year-round in competitive sports. For many of them, heel pain has become "just another part of the game." Foot and ankle surgeon, Shelly D. Sedberry, MS, DPM, advises that when a child complains of heel pain, it should be diagnosed promptly because it may be a warning sign of a serious foot problem.

Dr. Shelly Sedberry

Dr. Sedberry, a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, says heel pain occurs frequently in children ages 6 to 14 as their feet grow and the heel bone develops. "As children become more active in sports, they increase their risk for growth-plate injuries and subsequent heel pain," says Sedberry. This is especially true at the back-to-school time when surgeons see an increase in middle and high school athletes experiencing heel pain with football and soccer seasons simultaneously underway.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
NSAIDs May Increase CVD Risk in OA

In the first study to examine the possible role of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the elevated risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) of patients with osteoarthritis (OA), it was estimated that NSAIDS might account for 41% of the association between OA and CVD. This, the authors indicate, has huge public health implications, because more than three quarters of patients with OA are treated with NSAIDs. The study was published online August 6 in Arthritis and Rheumatology.

Rheumatologist Daniel H. Solomon, MD, chief of clinical sciences, Division of Rheumatology, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and professor of medicine, Harvard Medical School, Boston, and cardiologist Dominick J. Angiolillo, MD, PhD, FACC, FESC, director of cardiovascular research, University of Florida College of Medicine–Jacksonville, told Medscape Medical News that they find data from Anis and colleagues convincing. Solomon said, "The article is very well done and provocative. It suggests that a large portion of the CVD risk associated with OA is mediated by NSAID use.
