AT THE COLLEGES
NYCPM Participates in SUNY Optometry Health Expo

On Saturday August 3, 27 NYCPM students provided foot screenings and distributed information at the SUNY College of Optometry University Eye Center Health and Wellness Expo 2019. The fair was busy - 130 people attended, and each could choose to receive different health screenings, visit a large number of exhibitors, and/or participate in a variety of activities.

(L-R) Alex Krichevsky ('21), and Julius Nadarajah ('22) at the SUNY  Health and Wellness Expo.

Anthony R. Iorio, DPM, MPH, supervised the students, while Monique Young, administrative assistant of the FCNY, distributed and disseminated lots of information to the attendees: handed out FCNY literature, invited attendees to a foot screening (which she hoped would give attendees a preview of the skill of our students), and explained insurances accepted.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Walking Barefoot on the Beach is Hazardous: CA Podiatrist

"Walking barefoot on the beach and sinking your toes into the warm, soft sand can feel amazing. However, that lovely inviting sand can pose numerous hazards to your feet (and overall health), which can quickly lead to an unplanned trip to the doctor's office," said podiatric foot and ankle specialist Diane Branks, DPM.

Dr. Diane Branks

"Summer sand can get VERY HOT! Walking barefoot on hot sand can torch the bottoms of your feet, resulting in painful blisters and serious burns which should be evaluated by a podiatric physician right away," says Dr. Branks, President-Elect of the California Podiatric Medical Association (CPMA). "Additionally, lurking beneath and within beach sand can be sharp shells, shards of glass and slivers of metal, which means that one wrong barefoot step could result in a cut or puncture wound on your foot."

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
Choose Fit over Fashion for Back to School Shoes: CA Podiatrist

As families head out to take advantage of the numerous Labor Day weekend sales, at the top of many shopping lists will be a cool pair of new shoes for back to school. However, the latest cool fashion footwear trends my not be best for young feet that are still developing, according to podiatric foot and ankle specialist Adam Howard, DPM.

Dr. Adam Howard

“Often, parents simply do not realize the many health problems that ill-fitting footwear can cause their children,” said Dr. Howard, President of the California Podiatric Medical Association (CPMA). "Trying to squeeze a child’s foot into a shoe that is too small, or into ones that are too big with the belief that the child ‘will grow into them’ can result in a lifetime of health problems, from painful blisters, rub-spots, pressure sores, corns, and ingrown toenails in the near term, to foot deformities, knee, hip, back and neck problems in the future."

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
6 Technologies to Improve Your Practice - Part 5

Six technologies have profound impacts on patient engagement and practice workflow, according to a new report. The report from Medical Group Management Association and Cedar found these technologies have helped improve the patient-physician relationship, mitigate rising costs, and address the challenges of patient consumerism. Other added benefits include improved connectivity, streamlined  accessibility, elimination of paper documents and financial gains from a simplified billing process.

5. Digital payment options - Physician practices are estimated to lose up to two-thirds of revenue because of billing leakage. Multispecialty practices collect just more than half of accounts receivable within 30 days. 79% of consumers receive a paper medical bill, but only 21% want to make healthcare payments via check.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: CPT 11042 versus CPT 11045

I debrided a left foot ulcer that measured 5 cm x 4 cm with a depth of 0.2 cm. Additionally, I debrided a right foot ulcer that measured 7 cm x 5 cm x 0.3 cm deep. How would I code these procedures using CPT 11042 and CPT 11045? The wounds differ in depth.

John Scholl, DPM, Lady Lake, FL

Response: Wounds are billed by aggregate size of similar wound depth, in 20 square centimeter blocks. So wound #1 is 20 cm, and wound #2 is 35 cm for a total of 55 square cm. Line one is CPT 11042 unit one (20 sq cm) which leaves 35 sq cm so line two is CPT 11045 units two .

Keep in mind that you need to document that the tissue was debrided and that this is not just the depth of the wound. So you need to debride/document subcutaneous tissue. Your measurements are 0.2 cm which is not too deep. If all you debrided was skin, then you should use CPT 97597/97598 series using the same logic as above.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
RE: Illinois Podiatrists Publish a Rebuttal to Insurance Companies in FAI
From: David G. Edwards, DPM

APMA congratulates Weil Foot and Ankle Institute on the publication and awards for its article, “Correlation of Pre-operative Radiographic Severity with Disability and Symptom Severity in Hallux Valgus." This article is yet another example of how our profession collaborates to ensure our patients receive quality foot and ankle care from podiatric physicians and surgeons.

The need for such a study became apparent when an APMA member contacted APMA for assistance in challenging an insurance company’s prior authorization policy on elective bunionectomy surgery. APMA’s Health Policy & Practice and Clinical Affairs Departments worked closely with our member podiatrists to challenge the insurance company’s flawed policy. Recognizing the need for data to further demonstrate the inaccuracies in the policy, APMA Clinical Practice Advisory Committee Chair Adam Fleischer, DPM, spearheaded this study with his colleagues. Their published work has been used to challenge the insurance company, and APMA along with its member podiatrists continue our advocacy efforts. Once again, I congratulate the Weil Foot and Ankle team, and I encourage APMA members interested in conducting similar studies to reach out to APMA’s Clinical Affairs Department.
