PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
Job Satisfaction Falling For Physicians: MI Podiatrist
According to Conway McLean, DPM, "Times are hard for many Americans. Inflation is on the rise, and at a frightening rate. The pandemic and supply chain issues have only exacerbated the problem. But this is a constant for the costs of healthcare, which seem to be growing exponentially, and have been for years. The number of doctors in solo practice has fallen fast. Those economies of scale aren’t working in their favor in the private practice environment. The costs of supplies, the required protective gear, medications especially, have grown tremendously during the pandemic. Although everyone is having supply chain issues, these issues are heightened in medicine."
|
Dr. Conway McLean |
"The challenges faced in medical practice are unique. In no other setting does this unique triangle of participants exist. Patients are the consumer, while healthcare providers are the supplier. This makes the insurance companies the middleman, getting in the way of the process. But worse than that, they are dictating the process, deciding who gets what treatment. And the reason for many of these decisions seems arbitrary at best, even to educated consumers. To a physician in practice today, the private insurers are the enemy," says Dr. McLean.

Exercise Reduces the Risk of Gettting COVID-19: Spanish Podiatrist
Podiatrist, physical therapist, and lead author Yasmin Ezzatvar, PhD has produced what she believes is the first meta-analysis of studies examining how regular exercise affects risks associated with COVID-19. Most prominently, Dr. Ezzatvar gleaned from these studies that regular exercise was associated with an 11 percent lower risk of contracting Covid-19. But it doesn’t stop there.
|
Dr. Yasmín Ezzatvar |
“The stronger your body is, the better for everything — not only for Covid, but you will reduce the risk of a lot of other diseases that probably make you even more vulnerable for Covid,” she says. In this meta-analysis, Ezzatvar and her team rounded up and reviewed 16 studies on regular exercise and COVID-19 risk, including a total of 1,853,610 participants. She standardized the data for these disparate studies and assessed outcomes based on risk of infection with COVID-19, the severity of symptoms, and mortality.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
NC Podiatrist Discusses How to Buy Waterproof Sneakers
Lighter and usually more comfortable than boots, waterproof sneakers are a smart option for keeping your feet dry in wet weather. Whether you want to wear them for trail running, walking on the beach, or running errands in the rain, waterproof sneakers should be durable and easy to wear.
|
Dr. Gretchen Lawrence |
When shopping, look for waterproof—not water-resistant—shoes for the best protection. “Water-resistant materials can stop water from penetrating the material to some extent, but waterproof materials are built to resist water, even in the most extreme conditions,” Gretchen A. Lawrence, DPM, a podiatrist in Shelby, North Carolina, says. For extra traction on wet, slick surfaces, opt for sneakers with rubber outsoles and grippy treads.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Telehealth vs. Telewealth: Six Steps to Ensure Your Future
Your success or lack thereof will rest upon patient loyalty. Here are six steps to take:
2. Engage a company such as rater8 or Birdseye to increase your online reviews. A large number of positive online reviews accompanied by personal attestations will draw new patients.
Here’s an example from a practice of 30+ providers. Over fifteen months, it had 135 reviews with 102 comments and an average score of 4.0. They then retained rater8 and hit gold. Over the first four months, they had 2,868 reviews with 800 comments and an average score of 4.8. The average score went up because rater8 made it easy for happy patients to post comments and ratings, whereas before unhappy patients were more likely to go online and rate the practice. Not coincidentally, new patient demand increased significantly.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
From: Name Withheld
I would like to inform PM News readers of some misinformation posted in a letter from Catherine Yack, DPM regarding the renewal of her DEA license and the response by Elliot Udell, DPM stating that he had only one "little problem." Readers should be aware that there are some serious ramifications other than problems "ordering supplies". As a result of COVID causing elective surgery to be temporarily suspended from most, if not all hospitals, I felt that there was no reason for me to maintain my DEA license at a cost of $888. I doubt that there are many podiatrists who write for controlled substances outside of managing post-operative pain management. Therefore, I did not renew my DEA license as of October 2020. As a result, my re-certification to Elderplan, VNS, and recently (June 2020) Emblem Health (GHI) have been denied.
I have made two separate attempts to contact Emblem Health (via email as per their request); however, I have not received a response. (I requested a copy of my prior re-credentialing application to determine if the DEA license was a pre-requisite for participation in their program). I have been a GHI provider for close to 50 years. I cannot understand what a federal license (DEA is administered by the U.S. Justice Dept.) has to do with my license to practice, and if so, why have I not had any communication from Medicare?
