PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
NY Podiatrist Emphasizes the Health Benefits of Foot Soaks

Your feet are a cooling hotspot because they're home to key circulation points in your body, adds Emily Splichal, DPM, a New York-based podiatrist. "Placing your feet in cool water or a cool washcloth on the inside of the ankle can cool the entire body because of the easy access to circulation in these regions," she says. "They're referred to as pulse points, as they provide quick system effects that include cooling the body down or warming the body up."

Dr. Emily Splichal

To up the ante, throw in some cooling oils. "A great cooling agent is peppermint oil, aloe, and cucumber," says Dr. Splichal, who also recommends using something like Arm & Hammer Moisturizer + Gentle Exfoliator, as it combats odor on top of exfoliating, moisturizing, and cooling your body down. Obviously, you'll reap the hygienic benefits while you're at it, especially considering that "the feet are the closest proximity to the ground, which means they easily pick up dirt and bacteria when walking around," says Dr. Splichal. "With so many sweat glands, the feet should be washed daily to cleanse sweat and odor."

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1
AR Podiatrist Demands that School District be Returned to Local Control

The day after protests erupted at a meeting on the future of Little Rock schools, nearly all of the attendees at a similar gathering at Saint Mark Baptist refused to participate in “break out” sessions with State Board of Education members. Instead, Anika Whitfield, DPM and Pulaski County Circuit Judge Wendell Griffen led a session on establishing a list of demands for the State Board, including immediately returning the Little Rock School District to local control.
Dr. Anika Whitfield

“We are here to let the empire know that we will not accept their ways anymore,” Dr. Whitfield, a longtime activist with the group Grassroots Arkansas and a podiatrist, said. She then read from a list of demands to the State Board. Whitfield pointed out that those who have born the brunt of the turmoil in the district have been black and brown people. “That’s white supremacy,” she said.

A longtime podiatrist announced his retirement Tuesday after 33 years of practice. Dr. Roger Friedman will retire from his practice at Sheffield Foot and Ankle. He started his practice in Lorain in 1986 and moved to Sheffield in 2002.

Dr. Roger Friedman

His associate for the past three years, Dr. Kimberly Nichelson, will take over for him. The location will remain the same. Nichelson will be assisted by Dr. Amanda Meszaros, who also will maintain her Oberlin practice.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
Technology Cannot Change the Kinematics of Wearing High Heels: MI Podiatrist

Podiatrist Marisha Stawiski, DPM points to three small studies that conclude heels, in particular, can create many hip, knee, and other lower-extremity issues. “In the foot alone,” she says, “there are many problems that include, but are not limited to plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, Haglund’s deformity, painful corns and calluses, metatarsalgia, hallux limitus, and neuromas.”

Dr. Marisha Stawiski

Dr. Stawiski admits that some of the technology available, like memory foam and built-in arch support, can diminish components of the problems associated with heels, but the fact that all high heels are thrusting the foot into a very unnatural position for a prolonged period of time is the biggest issue. “Technology cannot change the foot kinematics of someone who wears high heels,” Stawiski says. “I try to practice what I preach and stay away from really high heels almost all of the time, and I do not recommend high heels to my patients.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
6 Technologies to Improve Your Practice - Part 4

Six technologies have profound impacts on patient engagement and practice workflow, according to a new report. The report from Medical Group Management Association and Cedar found these technologies have helped improve the patient-physician relationship, mitigate rising costs, and address the challenges of patient consumerism. Other added benefits include improved connectivity, streamlined  accessibility, elimination of paper documents and financial gains from a simplified billing process.

4. Telehealth - As of February 2019, 29% of practices offer telehealth services and 17% plan to start offering it. Telehealth has been well received in rural areas and emergency situations when physicians aren’t easily available or accessible.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Peter Smith, DPM

Robert Teitelbaum states that he hopes the verdict against Johnson and Johnson is the beginning of a turnaround. In my opinion, the verdict against J&J is a joke!  They make pills that help people. They do not prescribe them, dispense them, or hold people’s mouths open and force them to swallow them! Our culture of passing blame instead of assigning personal responsibility is poisoning our youth and may be the downfall of our society. Should Anheuser Busch be blamed for alcoholism? Should Smith and Wesson be blamed for murders committed with their guns? Some might say yes, but not me.

And by the way, since the post was really about the cost of medicine, the next time Johnson and Johnson raises their prices, ask them if it has anything to do with the half a billion dollar verdict against them.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Justin Sussner, DPM

Last summer, I had the pleasure of getting a perfect bull’s eye on my back. My PCP put me on the standard dose of doxycyline. I went to my local chain pharmacy, who happily filled it and took $60 from me, the allowed amount on my insurance.

About 2 months later, my wife was diagnosed with Lyme disease, and was given the exact same prescription. She went to our local mom and pop pharmacy who, when looking up the insurance info, stated "this isn't right", and then ran our info without insurance, and, for about $10, gave us the same doxy, same quantity.

The moral of the story is: always look up your medication costs before walking into a drugstore, and it always pays to know a good locally-owned business.
