CT Podiatrist Becomes the First Person to Swim from England to Belgium
Marcy MacDonald, DPM had already been swimming for 26 hours across the English Channel where the Strait of Dover converges with the North Sea. She was on her way from England to Belgium when she got stuck in a tide that tried to push her backwards, along the coast of France near Dunkirk. MacDonald, who has swum the English Channel 17 times, the most of any American, swam in place for five hours.
|
Dr. Marcy MacDonald |
And after that, she had six more hours of swimming to finish. Dr. MacDonald, a podiatrist from Andover, swam for 39 hours, covering 54 miles from Ramsgate to a beach in De Panne to become the first person to swim from England to Belgium.

STUDENT DEBT |
What Biden’s Student Loan Forgiveness Plan Means for Doctors
Key Takeaways
President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan may offer some relief to residents, but many attending physicians will not be eligible.
-
Residents may see $10,000 to $20,000 in debt cancellation, plus a reduction in their monthly payments if they are on an income-driven repayment plan.
-
Clinicians should review the requirements to see if they are eligible. They should also keep tabs on developments with the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, which could also help eliminate their debt.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Best Practices for Cleaning a Medical Office
The CDC and OSHA have set industry standards for medical office cleaning. These research-based procedures ensure staff and patient safety, lower risks of health care associated infections and reduces cross-contamination. Here are the key areas for medical office staff to focus on when cleaning the clinic.
5. Organize the reception area
It’s important to have an organized reception area, but this doesn’t mean it has to feel sterile or cold. You can maintain cleanliness while keeping that warm welcoming feel patients want when visiting the doctor. The reception area is where patients get the first impression of the office, so keep it free from clutter.
Remove unnecessary paperwork, pens, and clipboards from the reception desk. If any files are not in use, put them in their proper place. Most importantly wipe down the surface’s patients are using to fill out forms or other materials. Reception is also the last part of the clinic patients will remember. Maintaining a clean reception desk will leave a lasting impression on the patient’s visit.

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Documenting a New Patient
When our new patients come in, they electronically fill out their history which includes surgical history, allergies, medications, medical history, social history, etc. Until now, I’ve been repeating what’s already electronically in our electronic medical record. My question is, am I able to document in my progress note something like "medical history, social history, medications, allergies, etc. were reviewed and are inserted in the chart?"
Jeffrey Klein, DPM, Warren, MI
Response: You could, but I would not recommend it. Most electronic medical records I’ve reviewed that say what you propose do not include all the pertinent information you collect when requested. Many of these EMRs store that information somewhere in their system, but it does not go with the rest of the medical record when there is a request for records. I have reviewed more EMR records than I care to and none of them that had what you propose included that information. When looking for that information, it just wasn’t sent as part of the requested documentation.
I will leave it to others to discuss the most recent changes to E/M documentation and whether that information is “necessary” in the documentation for payment of the billed code, but medically – legally (I’m not a lawyer), I would make sure I documented everything in my EMR note.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS AND STUDENT DEBT) |
From: Michael M. Rosenblatt, DPM
I would like to thank both Drs. Kesselman and Kornfeld for responding to my letter comparing various choices for the profession, among them music, with podiatry. A recent article decrying lower Medicare payments to physicians just appeared on Medscape. The article questions: “how low will it drop?” So we are certainly not alone. The average income for podiatrists in NV is $109,560. This is certainly not as high as I would have hoped, although the 75% percentile is quite a bit higher. The average salary for cocktail pianists is about $20,000, and that is difficult to reach, even for Vegas.
I never looked at podiatry as my ONLY source for retirement income. However, I did write an accreditation manual and got my office certified as a Medicare Certified ASC. I owned the building I got certified in and built rental units on it. This provided rental income and facility fees along with...
