NYCPM Class of 2023 Receives White Coats
In a ceremony filled with anticipation and joy, members of the NYCPM Class of 2023 donned their new white coats in front of proud families and friends at the New York Academy of Medicine on August 21st. The 95 first-year students (the Class of 2023 actually numbers 103 students, including those who started in January) had been welcomed with a Hudson River cruise on the previous Saturday, went through orientation, and then slipped into the most tangible and visible symbols of the medical profession. VP for Academic Affairs and Academic Dean Michael J. Trepal, DPM welcomed the students and introduced all on stage, including Dan Kline, executive director of NYSPMA, and Loretta Logan, DPM, Chair of the Admissions Committee.

Keynote Speaker D. Scot Malay, DPM, MSCE, director of podiatric research at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, welcomed the students to the clinical realm. He said that the white coat is a symbolic part of the doctor-patient relationship that stands for cleanliness, compassion and caring, and a standard of professionalism. He related an anecdote that summed up the decision he had made to specialize in podiatric medicine: “Because … people should walk without pain.”

NY Podiatrist's Foundation Donates Backpacks to Primary School Students
Thanks to a new partnership between the Elmsford Police Department and the Heavenly Productions Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Armonk, NY, every student in the Pre-K through first grade school received a free backpack and notebook. The generosity did not end there, as the organization also provided the school with 60 new books for its library and a cache of school supplies for the classrooms including pencils, pens, crayons, art supplies, and more.

Dr. Kathy Reilly Fallon (upper center) |
Dr. Kathy Reilly Fallon, founder and chair of Heavenly Productions Foundation, said Elmsford police officer Doug Ramirez, who is also a trustee on the board of education, contacted her organization which is known for their Backpack Outreach program. They were only too happy to help. "To see the looks on the kids' faces, that is what makes it all worthwhile," Dr. Fallon said. "The hope is it gets people off to the right foot."

NY Podiatrist Discusses Best Shoes for Nurses
“You now see all kinds of medical professionals on hospital floors wearing running shoes that are designed to stand up to a lot of stress and strain,” says Karen Langone, DPM, a podiatrist based in Southampton, New York. Clogs are also a good choice, says Howard Friedman, DPM, a Suffern, New York-based podiatrist. They tend to have a wide toe box, which helps accommodate feet as they naturally expand throughout the day.
|
|
Drs. Karen Langone and Howard Friedman |
This is why you often see surgeons and other health professionals wearing them in the operating room, Dr. Friedman says. You also need a shoe that's durable but also lightweight—after all, you're probably clocking several miles a day around the hospital, so you need a shoe that won't wear out or wear you down. And, you need a slip-resistant sole.
