PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Protect Your Feet from the Sun: AL Podiatrist

The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons warns that the skin on the feet is highly susceptible to skin cancer, including melanoma — the most serious form of skin cancer — it can be fatal if not caught early. “When you’re barefooted or wearing sandals at the beach, use sunscreen on your feet to protect them from the sun,” said Brent Haverstock, DPM, Co-director of the University of Alabama, Birmington (UAB) Advanced Limb Preservation Clinic. “Sunburns on the feet are very common as most people stop the application at their ankles. Apply sunscreen to the entire foot, including your toes.”

Dr. Brent Haverstock

In addition to applying sunscreen, check the feet and toes regularly for abnormal-looking moles or freckles. If there are any abnormal marks on the foot, schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider to get them examined.

PODATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1
MA Podiatrist Celebrates 104th Birthday

Decades ago, Richard “Doc” Vallon, DPM worked as a shoeshiner. For one nickel, he polished and shined his customers’ leather shoes on Boston Common. Today, the wooden shoe shining kit still sits in Dr. Vallon’s Belmont home. Inside the box are the old bristle brushes, polishing cloth, and shoe polish.

Dr. Richard Vallon

When he returned home after serving as a medic in the Marine Corps during World War II, he found himself once again in the feet, shoe, and ankle business: this time, in podiatry. Over a career spanning 75 years, Vallon treated countless patients. On August 24, Vallon turned 104 years old.

OUTSIDE INTERESTS
Where Scalpel Meets Song: VA Podiatrist

David T. Weiss, DPM spends his days as a podiatric surgeon, where precision, patience, and problem-solving guide every move. But when the clinic lights dim, he steps onto a different stage—music. For Dr. Weiss, surgery and songwriting share the same core: rhythm, balance, and creating harmony out of chaos. One vocation restores movement; the other restores spirit—and together they form his version of work–life balance.

Dr. David Weiss

When Dr. Weiss was in podiatric medical school in Miami, I played in a band called Alliance with colleagues James Taylor, DPM, and Eric Teeman, DPM. Over the years, music has taken him from late-night jam sessions to sharing stages with Collective Soul, The Allman Brothers, The Killers, and The Goo Goo Dolls. Today, his original music has found new life on Spotify, Apple Music, and Pandora. Medicine and music might seem like opposing worlds, but they complement one another—whether repairing a tendon or performing a song, the purpose remains the same: healing through connection.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) - PART 1A
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM

Who was behind CPME's decision to lower the biomechanics requirements in our residency? I'd like to hear from those long-serving APMA delegates on this issue. I want to know who is driving this trainwreck! Is it PFA?

Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM, Schaumburg, IL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) - PART 1B
From: Ben Pearl, DPM

Paul, I am grateful for the many things you have written regarding DME in this and other forums. Regarding there being no "blue ribbon panel" to address the biomechanics situation, I offer that you should spread the word for the virtual biomechanics summit I have offered to students free for the past 4 years. Our next virtual summit with the AAPSM will be Superbowl weekend. I choose to do what I can rather than looking at what has not been done.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) - PART 1C
From: Robert Boudreau, DPM

I was blessed to work in Clifford McEntire’s office as an orthotic technician during my undergraduate studies. He taught me not only how to fabricate orthotics, but the biomechanical principles behind them. It was during this part-time job that I fell In love with the profession of podiatry. As a member of the CCPM Class of 1983, we were privileged to sit at the feet of Merlin Root, John Weed, Chris Smith, Ron Valmassey, Bill Sanner, and others. As such, I feel our biomechanical instruction was excellent. I used their teaching on a daily basis, incorporating it both with and without surgery, for 39 years until my retirement.

I have a few questions:  How many practitioners actually watch their patients walk and evaluate their gait before/after surgery? Before/after orthotic dispensing? How many residencies are either specifically dedicated to biomechanics or require rotations in biomechanics, and if so, who is doing the training? As a profession, we stress forefoot, rearfoot, and ankle surgery, but are we equally stressing how orthotics can be utilized peri-operatively?

As a profession, I feel we should stress our biomechanical expertise, the area that truly sets us apart from our orthopedic counterparts.

Robert Boudreau, DPM (Retired), Tyler, TX

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS)
From: Neil Barney, DPM, Herbert Abbott, DPM

I had to chuckle a bit when I read the Dr. Conenello article about the great advantages of walking barefoot when so many other articles stated a significant increase in plantar fasciitis while walking barefoot or in slippers with no support at home during the pandemic, especially on this site. Which is it? Do we really know?

Neil Barney, DPM, Mashpee, MA

With all due respect to Dr. Conenello, there are several other ways in order to safely (without risk) reinforce the muscles of the feet other than walking barefoot at home. As a retired podiatrist who became extremely comfortable from treating fungal and bacterial infections caught from barefoot walking, broken toes, metatarsals, ankle sprains, foreign objects, and plantar fasciitis, his advice is archaic. The majority of our population is obese; this is not an opinion, it is fact. With this obesity comes biomechanical pathology, quite often including pronation, which adds to instability. I have not even mentioned the risks of diabetes and PVD. A good, supportive “house” shoe is the safest option for ambulating in one’s home.

Herbert Abbott, DPM, (retired), NY, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP)
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH

The picture shown was after an amputation so there was NEVER a nail bed present to tattoo. My patient had the tattoo AFTER a total matrixectomy on both great toes where a nail bed was present. I waited 6 months after the procedure to make sure the bed was mature enough to tattoo over. It looked good at first, but eventually disappeared after a couple of years.
