PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Big Mistakes To Avoid When Creating a Press Release - Part 13

Press releases are a vital part of a practice's communication strategy. Despite their importance, many offices make mistakes when it comes to creating or issuing these messages. Writing press releases is a skill that many people like to think they have, but the reality is that it’s harder than it looks.

13. Weak Narrative Structure - One big mistake many practices make is not knowing how to organize a press release to begin with. They either cram too much information, or information that isn't relevant, into the beginning of their release, or they have nothing but click-baity material that says nothing at the beginning. The smart way to go is having a short and concise beginning that tells the reader exactly what they need to know. - Jason Hall, FiveChannels Marketing

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Non-covered RFC after an Amputation

A patient of mine had right, below-the-knee amputation approximately two years ago. He comes to us for care of his left foot, including shoes and inserts, care of ulcers, debridement of dystrophic nails, trimming of calluses, etc. Medicare is now denying CPT 11720, saying that at-risk care of toenails is not covered for 5 years after an amputation. We explained that he still has one foot that is definitely at risk. They said it is a new rule. We did not find a specific LCD or any other information confirming this. So are we expected to provide free care? Charge the patient cash? Any insight into this would be appreciated.

Jeff Bean, DPM, Carson City, NV

Response: Your Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) in Nevada is Noridian. Noridian does not have any such rule that you described here. I suggest you ask whomever you communicated with to share the documentation that reflects this rule. It does not exist.

Does anyone know the Medicare site where a doctor can check to see if a DME was dispensed to the patient in the last five years?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Timing of Webinars
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM

I have noticed since the pandemic hit that there have been an abundance of webinars offered to podiatry on various topics. I think this is great. I do, however, find it strange that a good majority of them are offered during normal office hour times. That seems odd to me. Wouldn’t it make more sense to offer them say somewhere between 6-9 pm EST, versus 12, 1, or 2 smack in the middle of the afternoon?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: David Gurvis, DPM, Carla R. Ross

I also use 10% NaOH and recently had it made specifically for me by a local apothecary. The price was nearly the same as that from commercial suppliers.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3
From: David Zuckerman, DPM

The MLS robotic M6 Láser has a hand held probe as well as robotic head. The question asked should be how often and in what specific clinical conditions are you as a podiatrist having to use the hand held, non-robotic hand piece with the MLS láser for foot and ankle inflammatory conditions i.e., plantar fasciitis? If the MLS is “robotic”, then why is there a hand held accessory?

Power density is key, especially for foot and ankle pathology for great clinical outcomes. I don’t see a robotic laser being used solely for foot and ankle pathology. The hand probe will be needed in deep seated pathology such as...
