75% of Nail Salons Don't Follow Disinfectant Protocols: TN Podiatrist
Whether you get your nails done religiously or only for special occasions, you may be surprised to learn that in addition to leaving the nail salon with a colorful, new full set—you could be going home with a bad infection. Dr. Robert Spalding, a Tennessee podiatrist and author of the book Death by Pedicure (which gives an in-depth account of all the possible infections found in the nail salon industry), estimates that 75 percent of U.S. nail salons don’t actually follow disinfection protocols.

Even more startling is the fact that blood-borne diseases like hepatitis and even HIV could potentially be transmitted via cuticle cutters, razors, sharp-edged foot files, and other tools that puncture the skin!

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Reasons to Rethink Your Patient Communication Strategy - Part 6
Ignoring the communications demands of younger patients is not a winning strategy for any medical practice. Here are some reasons why a unified communications strategy makes sense.
6. Care encompasses the entire experience - Sixty percent of physician practices say they deliver quality care to patients. But what do patients think? In a study, 81 percent said they found their healthcare experience lacking in some way. Among all healthcare consumers, those who interacted with physicians most frequently reported the highest rates of dissatisfaction, pointing to a disconnect between physician and patient perceptions of the same care episode. A survey of more than 35,000 online physician reviews showed that only 4 percent of respondents complained about a physician’s skill, diagnosis, or inability to deliver quality care. The main reason for a poor review, as cited in 96 percent of cases, was poor communication and poor customer service. That’s something that all physicians can work to improve starting today — and at no or little cost.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) | |
From: Name Withheld
Thank you all for your inputs and thoughts.
On the follow-up visit, the patient stated that wearing flat cheap sandals (Pali Sandals) interestingly decreased the pain. An ultrasound on both heels did not show plantar fasciitis. On physical exam, there were no positive neurological signs. We could not elicit any pain on palpation. We referred the patient to a neurologist to rule out radiculopathy/nerve entrapment although the patient had multiple NCV exams 7 years ago (from the previous episode of similar heel pain) which were normal.
I will update PM News readers on this most unusual case of heel pain.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 | |
From: Simon Young, DPM
Why would you ask pharmacists? Why wouldn't you ask, for example, rheumatologists? Aren't you the doctor? Do pharmacists prescribe or treat patients and see the drug side-effects or interactions? Do you trust pharmacists to give advice to patients, which they do, without examining them? Pharmacists can give vaccines and we are not qualified per NYS law to do so How embarrassing for our profession of "surgeons". Vioxx was also safe for the stomach, but it was a harmful drug. Glad you read an article, and yes Celebrex seems to be safer than Ibuprofen or Naprosyn.
Yes, the pharmaceutical industry is a rip-off and since drugs are no longer compounded, you should advise your patients about GoodRx and some others. I research the cheapest cost and use different pharmacies for my priciest drugs. There can be a big spread. For example, one generic prescription cost $150, and at another pharmacy it's $15. Another generic medication $60 - $300 for a 30-day supply, another local pharmacy $58 for 90 days. My son paid for a prescription made up of two components. You can purchase the two component for less than one half the price. Unfortunately, there is less latitude with branded drugs. In pharmaceuticals, sad to say, "a fool and his money are soon parted."
