ND Podiatrist Discusses Ingrown Toenails
According to Dr. Eric Hart, "Many people trim toenails by tapering the corners so the nail curves with the shape of the toe. But this technique may encourage the toenail to grow into the skin of your toe. The sides or corners of this nail then dig into your skin. The surrounding skin is likely to become swollen and tender and can become infected. The problem most often occurs with the big toe."
|
|
Dr. Eric Hart |
"Shoe pressure, injury, fungus infection, heredity, and poor foot structure also may cause ingrown toenails. Trim toenails straight across, select proper shoe styles and sizes, and respond to foot pain in a timely manner, " says Hart.

Podiatrist-WWII Veteran Turns 100
Dr. Oswald Chisholm was a sergeant in the Army for four years. So, why did the icing on his birthday cake Saturday call him a colonel? “We call him colonel because he always wanted to be a colonel,” said Ava Gomez, his youngest daughter. So it goes when you turn 100 years old. Chisholm, a podiatrist and a World War II veteran, celebrated his centennial in the company of his family and friends at Wood Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Chisholm’s parents died when he was 9 years old. He grew up in Jamaica with a family who took him in. When he turned 18, he moved to the United States and later joined the Army. After serving for four years, he left the Army and became a podiatrist, Gomez said.

Don't Sweat the Small Stuff: MO Podiatrist
Before Dr. Clifford Holekamp founded his St. Louis-based chain of podiatric medical centers, Foot Healers, he had thought through how to run a better shop. "At the beginning, I held employees accountable for every detail, including minutiae like office-supply expenses, personal Internet usage, and turning off lights," he says.
|
|
Dr. Cliff Holekamp |
"Because I was tracking such a laundry list of performance measurements, the employees really didn't focus, or excel, on any of them," he says. So, he decided to focus only on the big stuff, such as revenue metrics and customer satisfaction. "While the employees did end up sliding on the minutiae, they improved on the much more impactful metrics," he says. "The result was a higher-performing business with happier employees and less effort."

Treat High Heels Like Dessert: IL Podiatrist
High heels are the No. 1 culprit of foot pain for women, according to an American Podiatric Medical Association survey. Nearly half of all women wear heels, and 71 percent of heel-wearers say those shoes hurt their feet, the APMA reports. “With many types of heels, such as very high stilettos, foot pain is hard to avoid,” said Dr. Matthew G. Garoufalis, a podiatrist and immediate past president of the APMA. “But it is possible for women to find a happy mid-point between great looks and great pain.”
|
|
Dr. Matthew Garoufalis |
Even if you’re like the average American woman and own nine pairs of high heels, don’t wear them every day. Daily heel-wearing can cause the Achilles tendon to shrink, increasing your risk of an injury while doing activities in flat shoes, including exercise. “Treat heels like dessert,” Garoufalis said. “Don’t wear them all the time, just on special occasions.”

| SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS | |
Jack Morgan: What are the top three antibiotics that podiatrists should be using?
|
|
Dr. Warren Joseph |
Warren Joseph: If I had to choose three today, I would choose doxycycline, clindamycin, and cefalexin. Each of these is an oldie but a goody.
Meet the Masters airs live every Tuesday night. This week's guest is to be announced. You can register for this and future events by clicking here
