Foot Muscles React to Weight Gain or Loss: IL Podiatrist
The weight of your body is distributed across the soles of your feet each day, so if your body weight has changed, your feet will respond, says Bela Pandit, DPM, a foot and ankle surgeon with her own practice in Illinois.
|
Dr. Bela Pandit |
"For every 10 pounds that you gain or lose, the muscles in your feet either expand or contract, so the shoes you were wearing before may be giving you too little support, or too much entirely," she explains. Orthotics may help alleviate discomfort caused by weight gain or loss until your feet have adjusted appropriately.

PA Podiatrist Stages Street Performance of The Sound of Music
The hills are still alive, even during an unending pandemic. That’s what Atlantic County resident Doug Farrell, DPM and his friends and family wanted to convey to their beach town of Longport on Saturday as they donned homemade costumes and filled the streets, if not the hills, with The Sound of Music.
|
Dr. Doug Farrell |
“Let’s face it. A bomb dropped on all of us in mid-March,” said Farrell, a retired podiatrist who has lived in Longport for 39 years. Lip-syncing behind face masks, Dr. Farrell and friends staged a musical in the crosswalk at Longport’s only lighted intersection, dancing to numbers from the beloved show whenever the walk sign came on.

RELEVANT RESEARCH |
Symptoms Remain After COVID-19 Treatment
In a small patient study looking at recovered coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) patients who had been hospitalized, a majority of them said they had lingering symptoms. Of 143 patients who saw a provider for follow-up assessment care, only 18 (12.6%) were completely free of any COVID-19–related symptoms. However, 32% had 1 or 2 symptoms and 55% had 3 or more. None of the patients involved in the study had fever or any signs or symptoms of acute illness. There was a large range of symptoms with fatigue, dyspnea, joint pain, chest pain, cough, and anosmia being the top lingering symptoms.
In their post-care assessments, patients were asked to recount the presence or absence of symptoms during the acute phase of the virus and whether each symptom persisted at the time of the visit. More than one symptom could be reported. In addition, the EuroQol visual analog scale was used to ask patients to score their quality of life from 0 (worst imaginable health) to 100 (best imaginable health) before COVID-19 and at the time of their post-care assessment. A difference of 10 points defined worsened quality of life. Nearly half of the patients (44%) reported having a “worsened quality of life.” This is eye-opening and suggests hospitalized patients could be dealing with the effects of the virus after recovery.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Big Mistakes To Avoid When Creating a Press Release - Part 11
Press releases are a vital part of a practice's communication strategy. Despite their importance, many offices make mistakes when it comes to creating or issuing these messages. Writing press releases is a skill that many people like to think they have, but the reality is that it’s harder than it looks.
11. Not Promoting On Your Own Channels - It is understandable to want to take a breather after getting an important press release out the door. However, the press release's success depends on its visibility. Promoting the press release through any means necessary (e.g. your own site, social media, email blast, word-of-mouth, partners, etc.) is imperative in it being prosperous. - Larry Gurreri, Sosemo LLC

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Surgical Combination Issues
I am billing for a surgery with the procedure codes CPT 28291 -LT (Hallux rigidus correction) with the diagnosis M20.22 and the procedure code CPT 11423 -LT, -59 (Excision of Lesion 2.0-3.0) with the diagnosis code Q81.9 Epidermolysis bullosa. The CPT 11423 is being denied as “not medically necessary.” Is this a common denial? Should I appeal?
Gerald Newman, DPM, Conyers, GA
Response: The insurance company is assuming that both procedures were performed at the same site. If the CPT 11423 was at a different site on the foot or on a different foot, I would appeal with notes clarifying the sites. Usually that will work, but no promises.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
RE: The Passing of Allyn E. Peelen, DPM
Allyn E. Peelen died at the age of 88 of complications following a fall. Dr. Peelen earned a DPM degree from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago in 1957. Dr. Peelen absolutely loved his work. He opened his Alger Heights office in 1957 and maintained a flourishing practice in the same location for 63 continuous years, rarely missing a day until his retirement this past February.

For your patients coming in to your office with post-COVID-19 pedal pain, document this as well as you can. You may be their first physician to whom they are discussing these symptoms. No one knows the long-term sequelae (or none) from COVID-19. People may end up being fully disabled, partially disabled, or with no disability at all. Your documentation may be key to their receiving disability benefits. The same holds true for any physician who contracts this disease: make sure you get good documentation. We have no idea if this will affect our vision or the motor skills necessary for us to practice our profession.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Stephen Kominsky, DPM
I am happy to respond to this inquiry regarding the MLS laser. It works! I have had the laser in my practice for approximately 4 years now. I was skeptical at the outset, and frankly nothing could be further from the truth. Is it a panacea? No. Does it work 100% of the time? No. Is it BY FAR the best option to anything invasive (injections, NSAIDs, surgery)? Absolutely yes.
I do not know where my practice would be had I not decided to purchase it. It is the best thing available today for your patients and your bottom line.
Disclosure: I don't receive a penny from the company; I am not a consultant for them.
Stephen Kominsky, DPM, Washington, DC
