Jerry Seinfeld Thanks NY Podiatrist with Fourth Donation to NYCPM
Comedian Jerry Seinfeld’s ongoing gratitude to Joseph D’Amico, DPM for alleviating his previously intractable heel pain has led to his fourth donation of a substantial amount of money to Dr. D’Amico’s alma mater, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) . Dr. D’Amico is Professor of Orthopedics and Pediatrics and a past chair at NYCPM.
|
|
Jerry Seinfeld and Dr. Joseph D’Amico |
Mr. Seinfeld has directed his generous donations to promote non-surgical approaches to podiatric care via NYCPM’s Richard O. Schuster Memorial Biomechanics Seminar, which Dr. D’Amico initiated and of which he serves as scientific chair. The donation also supports Dr. D’Amico’s work at the Gait Laboratory for Biomechanics Research, as well as foot care for needy New Yorkers. The late Richard O. Schuster, DPM, also a graduate of NYCPM, was a pioneer in the field of sports podiatry.

MN Podiatrist Joins GRHS Staff
Dr. Alissa Redding graduated from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. She completed a three-year residency program near Detroit after medical school and returned to Marshall as a podiatrist. Dr. Redding is a board eligible doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM) and joined Glacial Ridge Healthcare System (GRHS) in August.
|
|
Dr. Alissa Redding |
Dr. Redding said she sought out Glacial Ridge Hospital because of the great things she’d heard from a former co-worker of hers who had made a career move to Glenwood a few years ago. After visiting, Dr. Redding said she and her husband Brent were attracted to the Glenwood area because of the lakes and outdoor activities, and the laid-back, small town life they would have.

Dr. Todd Snoeyink |
"This is one of the community events we strongly support and Home Sweet Home Ministries is a great partner," said Smith, who recalled that the drive began with podiatrist Dr. Todd Snoeyink and expanded when Snoeyink joined OSF Medical Group.

Biggest Problem in Nails Salons is Cross-Contamination: Canadian Podiatrist
Within 24 hours of having a pedicure at a west-end Toronto salon, Kristine Galka had trouble standing on her left foot. Within 36 hours, the foot was swollen — and she wound up in an emergency room. Galka's experience is a reminder of the potential health hazards of nail salons — a big business in Toronto, with more than 1,280 establishments offering nail services across the city. Fungus, dirt, and other contaminants can all lurk beneath a spa's relaxing veneer, even under the watchful eye of Toronto Public Health inspectors.
|
|
Dr. Robert Chelin |
Fungus is probably the most difficult thing to kill, says Toronto-based podiatrist Dr. Robert Chelin. "Fungus, when it goes airborne, lives through the heat, it lives through the cold," he says. And it also thrives in the water of foot baths. "Bacteria and fungus and warts — all those things we hear about — need water to grow, they need water to live." Since the jets can be particularly difficult to clean, Chelin suggests opting for foot baths with no jets, a separate easy-to-clean tub, or ones with disposable plastic liners. More generally speaking, the "biggest problem" at nail salons is cross-contamination, he adds. It's important to ask questions at a salon, including how the instruments and footbaths are cleaned and sterilized.

8 Patient Collection Mistakes to Avoid - Part 6
Medical practices are caught in the cross-hairs when it comes to collecting patient co-pays and deductibles. On one hand, they are obligated by their contracts with payers to collect patient cost-sharing amounts; on the other hand, patients are being faced with unprecedented medical bills. If you are caught in this collection free-for-all, here are the eight worst things you can do.
"Really, you have to educate patients about their deductible, because a lot of patients think, 'Oh I would only have to use that if I went to the hospital or was in a car accident.'" - Mary Pat Whaley

| QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL) | |
Query: Statute of limitations for Medicare Overpayment?
United Healthcare just sent me 3 letters asking for repayment of overpayments dating back over 5 years. Apparently, Medicare adjusted the amount of deductible remaining on these patient accounts, which caused United Healthcare (the secondary insurance) to incorrectly overpay by a small amount what should have been the patient's responsibility. This doesn't seem fair. I quickly looked online and found that President Obama signed into law in 2012 an increase from 3 years to 5 years the amount of time Medicare has to ask for a repayment:
SEC. 638. REMOVING OBSTACLES TO COLLECTION OF OVERPAYMENTS. (a) IN GENERAL.—The last sentence of subsections (b) and (c) of section 1870 of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. 1395gg) are each amended— (1) by striking ‘‘third year’’ and inserting ‘‘fifth year’’; and (2) by striking ‘‘three-year’’ and inserting ‘‘five-year’’. (b) EFFECTIVE DATE.—The amendments made by subsection (a) shall take effect on the date of the enactment of this Act.
To me, this says that they cannot go back more than 5 years? Am I correct? It is a small amount of money, but if we let them get away with this, there is then no limit on how much they can ask us for in the future. Has anyone else received these letters? To make it worse, on one claim, they only paid me $6.10 and requested that I refund them $24.92.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2A | |
From: John Guiliana, DPM, MS
Chess is a game, the strategy of which many people enjoy. The same "gamesmanship" attitude must be applied to our podiatry practices regarding MACRA. MACRA is nothing more than yet another business decision that deserves some analysis. I agree with Pam Thompson in many regards. There is no doubt a cost associated with MACRA compliance. But a thorough understanding of the initiative as well as a practice's micro-economics will help providers avoid a complete abandonment of the program, along with the consequential fee schedule breakdowns.
For the most part, some of the components of MACRA are no longer an "all or none", "pass or fail" type program, like Meaningful Use and PQRS were in the past. As such, I frequently guide podiatrists to understand the process of cost allocation, and arrive at a MACRA "cost-compliance balance" that's best suited for their unique practice's workflow, skill level, staffing, etc. By doing this, penalties can be reduced or mitigated without great suffering to what matters most...attention to patient care. Checkmate!
John Guiliana, DPM, MS, Little Egg Harbor, NJ

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2B | |
From: Scott Grodman, DPM
I agree with both Pam Thompson and Dr. Rubin, wholeheartedly. Instead of the constant "doom and gloom", here are finally some respectful ways to improve our offices, not how they will be destroyed.
Pam definitely put the information in an accurate, concise purposeful direction to either plug in your numbers, or simply as Dr. Rubin related, dollars into smarter areas.
Scott Grodman, DPM, Taylor, MI
